quote: Log by oregone.I don't know what it is about motel rooms that make me want to be all naked all the time, but it's oddly comforting. lauren and i play this game when we go to motels: when i'm in the shower, she does her best to hide somewhere in the room. Then, i rush out of the shower covered in lather yelling 'SOAPY BOY IS HERE!' in a Charlton Heston voice, find her immediately (not a lot of places to hide, you know), and then slide all over her making a big mess in the process. Then i jump back in the still-running shower, rinse off, then jump out and jump on her again yelling 'RINSY BOY IS HERE!' It's a really fun game, and i recommend it to all. Well, normally I wouldn't, but since he invites me, I'm game if Lauren is. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. Daniel Boone

Rattler attempts ambush of newbie geocacher!!
geoStrider replied to oplopanax's topic in General geocaching topics
quote:Anyone else ever had a venomous snake encounter at a cache? I've encountered a few rattlers in my search of the elusive cache. The most recent was just a month or so ago on a small peak near Tucson. Now that the weather is really warming up here in southern Arizona, those fellows are on the move. One of our cats has been bitten twice by rattlesnakes on our patio and survived both bites. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. Daniel Boone -
Sounds like a great cache & nicely stocked. Too bad I'm across the country; I'd like to check out those music cds. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. Daniel Boone

PC Magazine GPS Roundup Review
geoStrider replied to DirtRunner's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks DirtRunner, That is quite a range of units to compare. Such an offering almost warrants looking at them by some sort of class division. I noted the Legend was absent as well. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. Daniel Boone -

I never did the honor, but my father was a POW in Germany after being shot down. My older brother served in Nam, and I now have a nephew who is a scout in Iraq. A heartfelt thanks to those of you who served and those serving now. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. Daniel Boone

I've got this case too and have made a few prior posts about it. There are a few minor drawbacks: 1) the clear vinyl screen window does cover the click stick. No amount of "breaking in" will make it easier to use the stick; however, the simple remedy is to use a paper hole punch to place a clean cut hole over the click stick. This allows full use of the stick while still providing better protection than the Garmin covers. No need to remove the GPS once at a cache. 2) the zipper is at the bottom, not the top. This is a design error in my view. This means there is no access to the connector port when the case is on. This will be an inconvenience if you use aux power. It also means that GPSr must come out of the cover for downloads, etc. One really great feature is the velcro loop strap on the back. I "unpeel" it and then stick the unit to my dashmat for easy viewing while driving. All in all, I think this is the best option out there for covers. It provides excellent protection from scratches to the entire unit and the resilient neoprene provides an additional level of protection in the case of drops, crashes, etc. Check it out Follow-up comment: I should point out that I have a Legend, so the bottom zipper may not be a problem for some other units. Is this a Cache Yes or No
geoStrider replied to Tahosa and Sons's topic in General geocaching topics
This is most definitely a cache. I do share Nincehelser's concern about whether there will always be an available map in Coreys (sic) Stash. Also, you need a GPSr to get to GC29F5, so there should be no issue in that regard, not that there should be in any event. This is essentially a "two for one" blue light special. It should work nicely if a map is always in the first cache. Good job for creative thinking. Veni, Vidi, Cachi ... -

Is it morally acceptable?
geoStrider replied to Team Swift River's topic in General geocaching topics
If placing the cache does not violate any laws or other restrictions, I don't think there is much of an issue, especially if placing the cache is fine with the cemetary owners or caretakers (if any). Just be respectful in the treatment of locating the cache. Comic relief - Know why they put fences around a cemetary? Because people are dying to get in. Ugh. Veni, Vidi, Cachi ... -
Sounds like a great virtual cache site. If the viewing location is always open and truly not subject to the road closures you mentioned, there should be no problem assuming any necessary permissions are obtained. Too bad it's not closer to where I live, I'd like to check this one out. Veni, Vidi, Cachi ...

"Could Ammo Containers Launch Terror Alert?" Only if they learn to talk. Seriously though, a good hide and an innocuous, marked container would go a long way to alleviating possible concerns. People "prowling around" with electronic devices can raise the same concerns. I was stopped outside a federal building because I was observed on the monitors as possibly taking pictures of the building. I was just geocaching nearby with my son at a multicache near the building. Things are getting tighter out there Veni, Vidi, Cachi ...

Technology is changing too quickly to justify the expenditure on such a combo package. Too many functions in one package can result in any one of the components becoming obsolete, thereby obsoleting the entire package. All that said, look for a combo FRS radio, GPS, cell phone, PDA, gameboy clone, electric shaver, deodorant dispenser in the future! Veni, Vidi, Cachi ...

How good should I get? 17 feet accuracy 'acceptable'?
geoStrider replied to Geosaur's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use a Legend also. 17' is very acceptable stated accuracy. Generally, I get maybe 15' accuracy. When I am able to lock onto a WAAS satellite, I get 7' accuracy, but these times are few and far between given the antenna the Legend uses. WAAS acquisition for me here in southern AZ seems to occur only on mountain peaks and buttes. Veni, Vidi, Cachi ...
