  1. Leaving a few business cards or discount cards in the cache offering a discount at your B&B seems reasonable to me. It is merely a bonus for finding the cache. As long as you do not mention the discount or any other similar offer in your description, I think there should be no perception that this is a commercial attempt to solicit business.

  2. Just adding my "Nice Job!" to the others. Keep up the good work on improving an otherwise already great site.

  3. Anders is right, GPS Trackmaker will allow you edit them all at once. It's free and worked great once I updated a .dll also provided as a free download on the same site. It will not read the .loc file directly (at least I cannot get it to do that), but it can accept the output from your GPSr for edit and reload.

The selection process of the waypoints to edit is still a little cumbersome, but is manageable. For example, in the few minutes I have played with it, I cannot find a way to select all waypoints beginning with "gc", but other searches work almost as well.

  4. A good question. I am a recently elected school board member and think highly of exposing young students to technology such as GPSrs.

Here are some key points you might want to incorporate into your learning plan. The concepts of:

    coordinate systems

    datums

how these relate to maps (locate your current location on a map)

magnetic, grid (map), and true north

    compass fundamentals

the elements of the GPS system

    elevation

    accuracy

    respect for nature

    cache in, trash out

fundamentals of caching & using the unit

The detail to which you would address the above listed items depends on the age and aptitude of your students.

Be sure to issue each of the students a congratulatory certificate recognizing his/her first find.

I'd be glad to help out in any way I could.

I'd also be interested in the details of your grant. Our K through 8 would benefit from something like this.

  5. It will be much like it is today, except there will be a tax on each find, a signal use fee, a law about not using GPSrs while driving, a law outlawing caches in the city limits, a "GPSr for the needy" program by the libs (Michael Savage will love that one), and some lame reality tv show about celebrity extreme caching.

  6. IMHO, it does not sound like a find. If they had said "unable to sign log because it was wet", then that would be fine, but the two logs in question clearly indicate they did not locate the cache.

Verify it's still there, maintain it if it needs work, and give them another chance to log it.

  7. Hello DuhNPookinz,

Always glad to see another 'Zonie here. I have not used the Vista, but can vouch for the Legend as did a prior poster. It has served me well and has all the features I need.

Good luck in the adventures ahead!
