  1. Also, I read somewhere in the forums that some people are experiencing glitches in some maps that cause their units to shutdown when they come around certain areas...
  2. This is crazy man cause about 2 weeks ago I had the exact same problem as you have now. I couldn't find anything about it in any forums either. The problems seem to have disappear by themselves. Here's what might have fixed it. 1-I transfered data directly to the flash card from my laptop. 2-It worked because I now add access to the maps that had been transfered. 3-I drove from Quebec to Ontario and wanted to have a route caculated. 4-When I activated the route calculation from Montreal to Petawawa, my unit crashed. 5-I restarted it and tried again, it did crash again. 6-I tried a 3rd time and it worked and it never crashed again! 7-Once I arrived at Petawawa, I tried to transfer data through usb and it worked beautifully. 8-Never had any problems since then. 9-Still don't know what fixed my issues...
  3. The only thing though, is that Garmin Topo USA is on a 1:100 000 scale, which in my opinion is useless when you go hiking, you need more details than that.
  4. My opinion, transfer the maps directly to the sd card, it's way faster than goin through usb.
  5. That kind of precision doesn't exist, even for surveyors. 25 000$ Leica units sport a precision of about 3-4 meters at their best when used alone. They get centimetric precision when used in differential mode, where a second gps located exactly over a precisely known benchmark, sends a mathematical correction to the first unit by radio. Or, by surveying simultaneously 2 points when one of the units is on a known benchmark for a certain period of time (depending on the distance in between those 2).
  6. If your budget permits, you can run garmin's mapsource on virtual pc to upload maps to your garmin unit.
  7. Directly from Garmin's website: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...pareProduct=351
  8. Make sure you take a waypoint from your start point. Some gps's require that for a reverse track.
  9. The main difference between the 2 units: the 76csx floats, the 60csx doesn't! If you're boating alot than the 76 makes more sense, if you're only geocaching/hiking then the 60csx is the choice to go for. I have the 60csx myself and it's my 5th garmin unit, I would never buy anything else.
  10. If you're planning on using your gps along with a paper map, I would strongly suggest you to calculate the real declination for your area and put it in the gps. That way you get more precision. Never forget that by default, the gps is set to use the Real North, not the magnetic north nor the map grid north.
  11. Electronic compasses work just as good as traditional compasses and they don't get fooled by ferrous sources. Not only are the gps excellent for geocaching but I use them every day at work to find surveying monuments and I don't remember a day I couldn't find one! By the way, they are sometimes underground and I have to use the metal detector to find them, and no there's no need for a traditional compass anymore.
  12. Not only do they lock better but they do it about 4-5 times faster, thanks to the new sirf chipset. Just as a quick example, my 60csx locks the satellites fasters in my living room than my garmin Legend outside with a clear sky!
  13. Sometimes, installing the latest firmware or doing a hard reset resolve these issues and save you time without your unit!
  14. I have that product. Where do you see "update unit code?" I just did a quick check and don't see it in Mapsource, which, as far as I know, you need to run TOPO Canada. Disk 1 in the main index. Theres a tab that says "update unit code" When you have your cursor on that tab it says "Update your gps unit code""Topo Canada install required" That all i know. Nothing you should worry about since TopoCanada doesn't require unlock codes!
  15. First off, I would suggest you to read your manual from cover to cover, they do put these things in the box for a reason you know! Second, when you're looking for cache, you shouldn't use the map view but the compass view instead. By default, on the top right of the compass view, you should see the distance that separates you from the waypoint. As long as you're moving, the arrow will tell you which direction to go to find the cache. Tip: Look where the arrow is pointing and try to estimate, as you walk, when you get closer, where the cache could be. I have always used Garmin units myself but they all work the same. You choose a waypoint, you click goto, and you follow the arrow! Good luck.
  16. Website is down because I cannot log into it either. Hope will be back soon...
  17. The thing that causes the glue to become goey is the heat! Using my unit in Canada I never had that problem but as soon as I worked in Venezuela and Costa Rica I started experiencing what you described.
  18. To make things easier let me suggest you to save the geocaching.loc file to your computer and open it directly with mapsource, that way you don't have to enter coordinates manually, you have a bunch of waypoints you can transfer at once to your unit.
  19. Updating the firmware should do it. Force it to reinstall if you already have the latest one. And the time is calculated upon the satellite reception, the only option you have is to change the UPC offset for your time zone.
  20. The way the software inside your unit calculates your location on the ground is based on the satellite constellation overhead. So the time it takes to lock your exact position on the ground in greatly related to what your gps expects to see in the sky. That's the reason why, if you travel a certain distance, it may have to recalculate the constellation for your new ground position. Once it's found, your gps will know what to expect the next time you turn it on. Almanacs usually don't change much but the satellite health may change at any time. The more satellites you have, the quicker you'll get your new position.
