  1. There is a 3.42 beta release that apparently corrects this issue. You can find the thread on this forum and click on the link to download the file. http://www8.garmin.com/software/Colorado_342Beta.exe
  2. I'll second the suggestion to contact Garmin, that's my personal experience.
  3. Just a guess. The battery or satellite strength monitor could have been briefly irratic for some unknown reason, triggering a momentary alarm.
  4. Wal-mart is known to sell them in the sporting goods section. Someone in another thread mentioned that you could get a Colorado 400i for $200.00 on Amazon. It's a great unit for the money and it has a paperless geocaching ability. You can then find a free Canada topo map download called Ibycus.
  5. How much can you afford to spend? It really helps in the elimination process. Otherwise you end up going around in circles with all the choices and may possibly purchase something you will not be happy with. In the years that I've been lurking on this site,I've never seen anything like the amount of posts in the past year from people asking what they should buy. Part of it is attributable to the many models that have come out over that same period making purchase decisions difficult. Asking someone to tell you what to buy is not going to help you, spending time reading some model related threads will. You would be surprised what you will learn. Enjoy!
  6. Now that we've seen the Garmin 60 and 76 relaunched as the 62/78,will there be a new Etrex line and what do you think we will see for changes? My guess is that they will be sold with paperless caching and many of the software features that are found in other more recent models. The real mystery will be what retail price-point Garmin will choose to avail them on the market for. Will potentially changing the toggle button to something else be a good or bad thing?
  7. As a last thought. Get the Colorado as it's definitely worth more than what you're going to be paying for it. You'll be quite impressed with your savvy purchase!
  8. You're a bit late to the party! http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=250164
  9. What do you want for $200.00? You can't go wrong,as long as you understand and appreciate the Colorado is a discontinued model. Just order it for that price and know you got a great GPS with inland waterway maps and paperless geocaching ability. Don't end up liking it,just sell it later on for the same price or more.
  10. Based on the information currently available about the 62 series, what are the qualities that make it an irresistible purchase? From what I've discerned,it's just an updated 60 series with a few extra bells and whistles! For the most part, those same features can already be found in the Oregon and Dakota series and to a lesser extent, the now dead and buried Colorado.
  11. My suggestion is to go for the best bang for the buck. The various manufactures are constantly coming out with new models all the time, especially so in the last year. What was new and exciting is old and possibly out of date within a year. Save yourself some money and update every few years with units that have fallen out of fashion, yet still meet your needs.
  12. What's the proven benefit to the qaud-helix antenna? Garmin seems to make a point of it in marketing the new 62. Anyone know if it has an external antenna connection as found in the 60 and Colorado which are quad-helix models?
  13. In another thread about the recently released 78,it was specifically mentioned through a link, that it will also be using the Casterio chipset like the Dakota and Oregon. It's probably fair to say that it will also be built into the soon to be released 62. That makes software upgrades easier for the developers working on the Garmin handheld units. If my assumption is correct, does that mean because the Colorado has a MediaTek chipset,it will not be worth the time for Garmin to do any more than add enhancements to fix bugs,or what's needed to generate additonal revenue from it's mapping products?
  14. It's a given that Garmin would fix issues with it's software in respect to existing units. I'm curious to hear any opinions as to whether the Colorado, with it's discontinuation, see any enhancements that owners been requesting for almost two years such as Track Manager and an alternative text entry? It's wise for Garmin to remove the Colorado from the market considering how they screwed up what could have been such a great product. My hope is that they learned something from it,considering the loss of good-will from many customers.
  15. Try going to the Garmin.com website and creating a profile where you can regisiter your unit. You can then contact them through the site and request they send you a replacement. Garmin is generally very helpful and you may end up getting it for free.
  16. x4 on the Colorado. Sure would like to know a bit more on the reasoning for discontinuing the line. Perhaps Garmin thought the 62 was the way to go forward. My unit has been a rock solid performer since day one and that's over two years ago.
  17. Gosh,I thought the Dakota is a eTrex replacement,same goes for the 60/70 = Colorado/Oregon series.
  18. Can the OP please qualify their statement about the discontinuation of the Colorado as a decision of the retail store,or is this a decison by Garmin to end production. Considering Garmin just released a raster map beta for it that coincides with similar one's for the Dakota and Oregon, one suspects it's the retailer's decision not to offer the Colorado in the near future. We live in a world of gagets and touch-screen is a big selling point which inturn helps retailers turn over stock.
  19. Garmin sent me a replacement back cover with the orange SD card gasket seal. I put a tiny bit of spark plug electrical grease on the battery gasket and the results were amazing. The battery cover slides on and off very easily. I highly recommend others consider also removing the R&R wheel using your thumb nail and putting the same electrial grease on the bottom side of the wheel and housing which results in the wheel spinning freely without the sensation of it binding.
  20. I have only had mine for just over a month, but with all the topos and CN I think its great. Its never been buggy for me with the newest updates applied. I was lucky enough that the latest 3.0 update came out like 2week after I bought it, so its been great as my first paperless unit, totally different on how I cache now. The only thing I can see better on the Oregon is if you need to enter info or type info in, the wheel is a pain for that, otherwise for everything else I prefer the wheel. The other reason you might see this is that the Colorado is discontinued so they are getting harder to get, but if you can find one you can get a great deal, I only paid $270 for mine brand new on clearance at Best Buy. The discontinuation of the Colorado is news to me. Has this been confirmed by Garmin?
  21. Same here, very fast acquisition and lock.
  22. I don't know if I agree. I just did a 24 hour cache event and my partner was running an Oregon, with me running the CO. The Oregon was certainly more laggy when leaving the car. Normal drift in heavy canopy was also worse with the Oregon. As to the large "drift", it does not seem to have changed for me from day one. Very rare and only happens in heavy multipath areas. Never happens with an external antenna. How effective would you consider a external antenna? Trying to imagine how you use yours. Interesting to note that of all the latest Garmin outdoor units Colorado,Oregon and Dakota,it's the only one with an antenna port. Got to admit it sure would be nice to have a Track Manager on the Colorado and hope it will be considered with the next software update.
  23. The o-ring on the battery compartment does not seem to roll up. It does catch at the very top of it, and I just press it down before I slide the cover all the way up. Can someone tell me if you still use the original SD slot o - ring with the new cover? I am still amazed how some of the covers seal better around the outside edge than others. Granted as G O Cashers stated, this is the waterproofing seal, but it does help keep "muck" out of there. Garmin sent me a replacement back cover and I too have the same question about the SD card slot O-ring. Should and does it need to be removed. My guess is yes,but I defer to those that know better. I noticed something unusual about the new cover,it has a very small hole in it that lines up exactly with where the SD card would be positioned. Call me an idiot, but wouldn't that let water into the unit or is it there to somehow equalize pressure(See picture in post #11)?
  24. Just some speculation on my part. I would have thought that prior to the release of version 3.0 that we would have seen an additional beta release such as a 2.98 which would have contained more features,ie,Track Manager. My feeling is that they shelved those plans for the time being.
