  1. I agree with you - "where's the snow already" No ticks, no leaves, and you can bee-line right to the cache. Espcially with snowshoes. juliamark
  2. Thanks Suntzu. Anyone have any others? -juliamark
  3. Some relatives that I introduced to geocaching over the holidays are now bit by the geocache bug. They are heading to Utah Jan 16th to ski the big areas East of SLC. (Alta, Snowbird, Deer Valley, Park City, Solitude, Brighton...). They are wondering if someone could recommend any caches that were available without having to give up skiing for the day. Any ski-in ski-out caches on those slopes? Thanks - juliamark
  4. Hey Cachewidow - I miss Victoria. Used to do lot's of SCUBA diving up there. I rememeber the Breakwater, and also Henderson Point and Oak Bay. Now I am stuck in the NorthEast where it's starting to drizzle a bit and getting down to the high 30's tonight. The leaves have turned and soon it will be "colder than a witch-digger's brass monkey" -- juliamark
  5. I like my Mountainsmith Passage lumbar pack. It stays out of the way, but I can slide it around to the front when needed. It has adjustments which keep it from riding down and all the weight is in the correct spot (hips). It can hold a terrific load (with optional suspenders if necessary). Also there are two water bottle pockets that hold plent of water. I like bottles over the bladder because being lazy, I would rather put new bottles in each time instead of cleaning and drying a bladder. I like lumbar packs because I find them much cooler than any pack against my back in hot weather. I have packed for lite overnight trips in the Grand Gulch area of Utah with this pack. I also find it perfect for Geocaching and day-hiking in the NorthEast. - juliamark
  6. Is this listed anywhere? I have already hit the "Un-original cache" in Oregon, just a few feet from the very first cache that started all this. I was wondering if this is tracked for each state. It would be fun to hit all these. - JuliaMark

  8. Email me, Criminal. I'm a former NWesterner now living in NY I am familiar with your area - used to do lot's of SCUBA around there.
  9. I have a good photo, but I can't figure out how to post it to this forum. The marker says (in a circle): U.S. General Land Office Survey - 1947 - Then on a smaller circle inside it says: Penalty #250 for removal Then in the center there is a straight line with an: "S14" to the left of the line, and an "S13" to the right. right on the top of the line is a stamping that looks like the fraction "1/4" Can anyone help? I would like to get started finding benchmarks, but my first one has me stumped. What kind of marker is this? And why can't I find it on the maps (I have looked where I found it and there aren't any markers showing on the map)? Thanks for any and all info you can provide. I'm new to benchmarking
  10. If it truly moves while your hand is at rest, then try this. Touch a good ground (grounded metal, no paint) with your non-mouse hand and then after a few seconds, place your other hand on the mouse. If it's a field effect the movement should be lessoned or gone. What kind of floor and chair material do you have? Are they creating a static charge?

  12. Thanks for the tip, Mopar I got to see him. Nice skit - nice T-shirt!
  13. Here is one I decrypted recently: --------------------------------------------- Additional Hints (Encrypt) Don't try to park at the park unless you are a Stamford resident. Go past park and stop near tennis court. ---------------------------------------------- How would you like to decrypt this AFTER you payed your ticket and got your car back from the impound? 16. quote:Originally posted by GeoSharks:I was thinking about putting the code on pvc pipe. But I wonder, what type of paint would stay on the plastic in salt water? Why not use the bottom paint they put on sailboats in saltwater?
  17. OK, I give. Is this supposed to be an encrypted conversation? Who was on TV????
  18. How about using some kind of transparent (plastic) container or dome that is open on the bottom and attached to an anchor of some sort. Make a little shelf on the inside above the moon pool (water level). Attach it so the container would be 20' or so from the surface so a free diver would have a chance. Place items on the shelf so they can be seen from outside. Attach a plastic slate with a pencil for logging while underwater. To trade items, a SCUBA or skin diver would reach up inside to place or take an item.
  19. Maple Bars - All over out in the Great Northwest, since I moved to NY... never seen one. Think of glazed dougnut dough and coating in a rectangle shape about 2.5"-3" by 7"-8" and about an inch thick. Now pour the maple frosting over the entire top. I know, I know, they have maple coated doughnuts - it's just NOT the same. On the other hand, since moving here I sure can't stomach a bagel anywhere else (that includes Jersey ;-) dadgum hard to find a good fresh strong cup of NW style coffee out here also (though getting a little easier all the time). And don't even get me started on the first time I ordered coffee in a deli out here and when they asked "regular?" I replied "yes" thinking it was the same meaning as out West (good ole caffenated regular coffee) - yuuuuck!

  21. I was just in Oregon a couple weeks ago and realized my brother lived about 10 miles from the original cache site. It's gone, but the Un-Original is there taking it's place just a very short distance away. Of course, I logged it. Then I got an idea for a TB. I am sending my brother a TB and he will place it in the Un-Original cache box. I will sit back and see how long it takes to make it back to me here in NY. I am calling it "Lassie Come Home". I thought it would be cool to have a bug that started where "This whole sport" started... BTW - the Original site is now just a muddy hillside.

And if the jolts kept coming, it would be "stampede" in any one of 360 degrees of direction! On the other hand, after a few attempts on the real thing, all that is needed to stop the "educated" ones from using a road to cross a fence line is simply just the image of a cattle guard painted in white on the road.
  23. quote:Originally posted by Team BooneDog:A little off topic but I was reading a few weeks ago about a study last summer in Montana where they captured a grizzly and put a collar on it that had a gps in it that would record position every hour or so. The collar was programed to release itself after 3 months and send out a signal so game and fish guys could find it. I wonder about the release mechanism? I hope they didn't use Nasa's exploding bolts!
  24. Get rid of that bogus tag hanging from her collar and replace it with a TB. Then if she is ever lost, some nice geocachers will be able to eventually get her home -
  25. I am heading out West next week for a road trip from Oregon through Idaho and then to Southeast Utah to pack into Grand Gulch. Will be hitting a few caches enroute and also around my final destination. Anyone have a bug that needs a ride, or want one dropped off to see if it will come home? - juliamark
