  1. Welcome, come join us at the Midwest Geobash 2011 this week. There will be people from all over. Great opportunity to get to know people.
  2. I don't know of many caches anywhere large enough for those. Those items are usually passed around at events... often mischeiviously. Looks like you need to attend an event or two and pass them on. I've know of cachers who've seen other cachers with those geocaching window decals on pickup trucks in parking lots and as Torry says mischievously "leave" them in the back of those said trucks. Of course I would never do such a thing to someone I didn't know. Seriously never have
  3. Weather is warming up, snow is melting time for more caches to be hidden
  4. Trader Rick sometimes goes overboard on numbers. But, there are tons of us. EdgeIN just held a Meet and Greet here in the Fort. Plus, our Spring Picnic will be here soon and that is pretty close. The forum topic is 2011 Spring Picnic and the Event page is GC2JAW9.
  5. I'm from the other corner of the State but, welcome anyways.
  6. Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Went back to see my parents and did some caching on the way home. Can't wait for the sun to be out longer in the day again.
  7. You dress Oyster's down there? Is the sun getting to you? Enjoy and have fun
  8. Yesterday was Veterans Day and Thanksgiving is around the corner. What's everyone's plan for turkey day?
  9. You might get more feedback by taking this to the main forum.
  10. Gonna have to skip out on the event this year. Too much other things going on. Have fun up there
  11. Actually you can get some good deals on ebay just read up on who's selling the item. You can also check out the garage sell section of the forum at GPS Garage Sell
  12. Saw one of your posts on another thread. I would hold off on attempting to hide or even adopting a cache until you can either borrow consistently or purchase your own GPS unit. This is from the Guidelines for hiding a cache You as the owner of the cache must visit the site and obtain the coordinates with a GPS. GPS usage is an essential element of geocaching. Therefore, although it is possible to find a cache without a GPS, the option of using accurate GPS coordinates as an integral part of the cache hunt must be demonstrated for all physical cache submissions. So, I would definitely wait a while for hiding or adopting your first cache. Just my opinion.
  13. Sure, it can give you an opportunity to pair up with different cachers and see what type of GPS units are out there and what each one is capable of doing. Maybe it will help you decide on which one to purchase if that is what you are interested in. A GPS unit will definitely make geocaching a lot easier.
  14. Like I'm gonna remember this date this far out in advance
  15. Here's my thoughts on this. In both directions the entrances to the rest stops are blocked so you would have to enter via the exit. This would draw too much attention. You would have to coordinate permission with INDOT and also the State Police since they patrol the area. I think the police would not want to be pulling in there every time they see a car in the closed rest stop to see what a geocacher is doing. As far as I know this is still state property and the only entrance is via US-30. I would refrain from doing this.
  16. There's plenty of the Ft Wayne area cachers on the forums. Might also want to follow this thread Indiana Cachers Hello. It is for all of Indiana but, we get quite a bit of NE Indiana postings. Keep an eye out for local events and show up for them. We try to have one a month.
  17. I will beg to differ on a lot of the issues at stake here. Arm chair logging of EarthCaches is alive and well. In fact it is thriving. Finally fed up with it all I archive the four I had. My last one all the required answers were around the site or on the cache page. However, people were coming up with all sorts of other answers they googled then swore they were at the site because they didn't have to prove anymore because there is no more photographic evidence needed. At the posted coordinates to this EarthCache there was a sign which stated the following "The 'U" shape of the rock layers (called a syncline) demonstrates the intense compression which folded these rocks about 240 million years ago. Subsequent erosion has shaped Sideling Hill into its present form because the white sandstone layer at the top of the ridge has resisted erosion." The two bolded areas were answers to two of the questions. A chart on the cache page even showed the difference between a syncline and an anticline. It appears that upon the closure of the education center a website was created which posted some additional information and also some data can be found on other websites which gives an incorrect answer or an answer that is contrary to what I am looking for to layer of rock which resists erosion on this feature. Going back and forth with the finder and/or waiting for weeks at times for the emails to be sent finally led me to just say to forget about maintaining any EarthCache. It's not worth it anymore. The simple idea of a photograph of yourself at the location will prove you are there if for some reason you cannot provide a correct answer. Or, if there is some gray area regarding an answer. It will also prohibit the armchair caches. It's very easy now for me to just say "Hey John for GCxxxx the elevation is 123 and ....." and all anyone has to do now is email the cache owner with the answers. Now honestly how can anyone prove that someone wasn't there? They can't it all has to do with honor and honesty and for those who want nothing but the numbers they are will log every EarthCache they can. Good luck maintaining your EarthCaches.
  18. How does a log cause battle lines? I've had a couple of Needs Archived logs on caches I own. No battles. Outcome was fine. It's a log that goes to a reviewer. No biggie. Causing battle lines happens when someone creates a sock puppet account then goes logs a Needs Archived on all caches belonging to a particular cache owner because of personal issues. This has been happening in this area. Also, this sock puppet account has been searching the past logs and if there are three or more DNF's then they will log a Needs Archived. Just because there are three or more DNF's in a row doesn't mean the cache is missing. The Needs Archived log can be and is abused quite often. Put some caches on your watchlist and you'll see what happens.
  19. Nice park. Too bad I already have plans for that day or I would put it on my calendar to be there for the event.
  20. What's going on Indiana? Forum kinda slow lately.
  21. Some of us work for a living. Since you have the day off you can come over and paint my house I have the rest of the weekend free atm
  22. Don't forget everyone this is the Spring Picnic weekend.
  23. You might want to read the Cache Listing Requirements section. Under the section of Logging of All Physical Caches This guideline change applies immediately to all logs written from April 4, 2009 and going forward. Older caches with "additional logging requirements" (ALRs) are not grandfathered under the older guideline. If you own an existing cache with mandatory additional logging requirements, we request that you: * Cease deleting logs based on additional logging requirements. * Review your own cache listing to see if the ALR can be made into an optional and simple task, or whether it must be removed altogether. * Adjust your geocache listing by editing the text then contact a reviewer to change the cache type, if appropriate. This sounds like you are wanting the cacher / cache finder to log or write poems as part of the cache. If this is the case then don't be surprised if the cache isn't approved or if you can only politely ask this to be done as a optional requirement. You probably won't get many takers. If I'm misreading what you are saying and you are doing the poetry and you are just wanting people to copy it on the index cards you are providing then accept my apologizes.
