  1. United States Coast Guard here! 10 year veteran.
  2. Looked real quick in the "manual" didnt see this stated anywhere. I want to hide a cache near an airport ....... BUT this airport is extremely small and only a few gliders and Hot Air Balloons take off from here (Randell Airport near Middletown New York) I want to do this cache here because of the hot air ballons - they are really cool to watch. Anyone see a problem with this idea?
  3. OK - I am also have the invalid char issue even after overwriting the file. I would really love a fix to this problem as I have no other way of sending info to my IPOD, which makes cacheing for me a whole lot better!!! Please Please Please - someone post a fix. Thanks
  4. go to the mapsource webpage and download the free version of mapsource (it has really generic maps of places - no use for them). Then upload your 09 update into the program. I learned about this on Groundspeak, but cant find the thread. PM me if you need more help.
  5. it so much nicer to have the query on the gps , lots a (DING) letting me now there's one ahead, or 6 or 7 lol. how do you get you GPS to do that? Maybe I need to get a better GPS unit!!!
  6. of course I just transfered out of Fort Dix .......... I should have re-enlisted so I could of done this, LMAOROTF, just kidding. Maybe one or more will be to the north.
  7. Could someone with knowledge of this place please PM me? I have a few questions. My questions are simple, but would rather not display my ignorance of these events LMAO
  8. Look, you definitly can't please everyone on this little rock we call earth. Just as the Cache finder projected his unhappiness to you about the cache, you did the same back. No real difference here. Keep it the same, change it, move it, hang a pretty picture on a tree near the spot - it don't matter we cant always hit a home run. Learn from it and move on. Maybe its like my marriage - the first one sucked and was for practice, but the second time I got it "oh so right"!!!!!
  9. And it's taken me over a year to get 21 caches ........... thats it, Im quitting my job, selling my family and doing nothing but GeoCaching for the next 5 minutes .......... then my numbers will have grown by ......... well, maybe 1?
  10. It takes all kinds to make the world go round .............. There is no right or wrong when it comes to what someone likes. As long as the person you encountered only gets lost when it is his PLAN, then good for him. Bring what you want - be happy - do not ever worry about others - thats what makes us all unique.
  11. Hiding some Caches yourself would be pretty slick, or if you have the time, try to find them on your own first then bring the kids along. Also, take your GPSr along with you where ever you go and play around with it. I know with mine, it is kinda finicky and I notice that slow and steady wins the race so to speak, when I walk zig zag, change direction (north to south or east to west) the GPS does all sorts of wierd things and isnt accurate at all. One other big thing I have learned when dragging the kids along - Use the Yahoo/Google map and click on it - then use the terrain feature, it shows you a satellite image of the area (a birds eye view from above so to speak / a picture from a plane overhead looking down?) then you would have a much better idea of where you will be heading. Good Luck!!
  12. ok - so who knows where to find out about internet laws? I dont want a forum sections or anything like that - kid friendly cache page for searching or something. These are already on the site, and if thats the case - cant we just name it Family Friendly Cache's?
  13. I am sure this has been brought up many times before, but I would like to know how to go about doing the following to make it happen. I would like to see an entire section devoted to Kid GeoCaching on geocaching.com. Kids these days need to be outside more and one way to do our little part as adults to beat the PS2, XBOX, Wii, Gameboy ect ect addiction is to make kids feel more welcome. Now in no way did I just imply that kids arent welcome here by any means but we could make it more kid friendly. When my kids wanna go GeoCaching they know how to do the search on the net, but then they need my help to filter which ones are at their ability. To knock out a few quick negative replies - yes, I monitor my kids on the net at all times, yes all kids should be monitored on the net, yes I am very active in my kids life yadda yadda. BUT I think kids would be very proud of themselves if Mom, Dad, Big Brother, Big Sister didnt have to help them with picking out caches for the day. If we had this kid friendly section then kids could set up the festivities for the day and take more of a self motivated leadership role at times. I am sure that last paragraph makes for horrible reading but I think it gets my point across. My other idea is possibly for a kid friendly search selection or maybe a special icon to denote those caches for kids? I have more thoughts on this subject but will stop for now. If someone could point me in the right direction on how to get this started I am more than willing to help out. I can make web sites (to a point) Anyways - thanks for any help anyone can offer me. Of course GeoCaching.com could just make it happen easily Im sure
  14. no reason for an entire state download - I think that is a tad ridiculous. I live in New York and it would take me about 6-7 hours of driving to get to the other side. If I know I am going to travel that far away I can take 5 minutes and get a new pocket query done and loaded. You sound like a control freak to me!! Not needed, move on.
  15. Awesome, good for you. Now you will be addicted, just like me. Its finding the time that is the hard part.
  16. I have been in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years+ and was a Boarding Officer (responsible for boarding vessels to make sure they are in compliance with local, state and federal laws. I know of no such ban on ships concerning GPSr's. So unless it is a company rule/ban I say keep on Cachen'. and if im not mistaken GPSr's only recieve, they do not transmit. Transmissions is what effects Radars, Radios and other Communication equpiment on board the Vessel or aircraft.
  17. and to think I was all over Alaska for 4 years and never did one single GeoCache the entire time - what a waste (didnt learn about GC until about a year ago). Now I need to go back - I know lots of way cool places there lol.
  18. Motorcycle Mama is correct. I have the same problem. I cant afford to buy the Garmin maps but my work supplies me with a blackberry with unlimited data, so I use that to go online while out and about. The only thing I could ever think of to do was to copy the google map prior to heading out.
  19. Welcome, good luck and if you find anything cool - let me know!!!
  20. Ziggy, Keep your head up and keep on hiding caches - no harm in what ya did. I just moved back to the area and once I get some time (ya know the same ol' - wife, kids, dog, work, yard, family, sports, yadda yadda yadda) I plan on finding all of them!!!! lol Orange / Sullivan county line resident.
  21. Hey El Diablo - I love that hiking stick, very cool I want one
  22. I find this kinda funny - you were mad about this email you got but did exactly what they asked of you - advertise and get their name out - GOOD JOB!!!! Maybe they will send you "As part of our grand opening, we are giving away a free micro metal cache" for helping out? Now Im gonna go check out the website.
  23. For me, CacheMagnet has been awesome. It will automatically send cache info - hints, posts, location and all with just one click of the mouse. The program has many more nice features also. It was developed as freeware - and like I said, Its awesome. Link is here http://cachemagnet.googlepages.com/
