  1. Depending on the maker of your memory card *MANY* of the card makers offer lifetime or 5 year warrantees on their cards. You may want to check out if you can get it fixed for free.

     

    One more thing to consider in doing this. Play dumb. Many times you can call them say you bought it a year ago and now it's fried. Without a receipt you can usually still get them to replace it for free.

     

    Might save you a few bucks. Most memory cards are inexpensive nowdays but every penny counts.

    That description could mean one of many things but one could assume it had something to do with the sequence of signal generated internally in the receiver that is similar to and matched against the incoming signal, which allows the receiver to determine time and hence the pseudo-ranges.


     

    I know the UNIT does not have that ability, but from what I have read the WAAS base stations DO have the ability to transmit to the satellite. Does anyone have any articles to back this up?

  3. I received my units from garmin yesterday and the repair order had listed on it "ajusted GPS signal drift". Curious about what there was to adjust I went out to the web to do a search. The only entry I could find was where the WAAS and DGPS send messages back to the satalites to correct signal drift by adjusting the clock on the offending satellite. That made sense.

     

    So my question is, what did garmin adjust?

  4. Well I had to send my 2 units in to garmin last week and they both just came back today.

     

    1 was in warantee the other well, let's just say that I said I "Purchased" them around the same time. Which was true however the second unit (in good working condition at the time) was purchased used so I didn know when the warantee was from.

     

    First, I called garmin and told them I think their rubber band is a major manufacturing defect. I was told by the rep that they don't see them come back again after they fix the problem. CyBret says his has come off "again". Now If/when mine ever comes off again I'm going to INSIST that garmin replace it because it is a defect in their design.

     

    I strongly reccommend that anyone presses the issue with supervisors on out of warantee units and insist the replace it.

     

    I was able to call them up and with a minimal amount of complaining have 2 units comlpletely repaired at garmin's expense. I love my eTrex legend but I dislike the problems I had with it.

     

    I also put together a list of the frequent eTrex issues which you can feel free to sight when you call about your Garmin unit. People shouldnt have to pay for faulty designs.

    There is a lot of information on maps and garmin maps on www.keenpeople.com . We are constantly getting new information, downloads etc on maps. We also have a tutorial on how to create a custom map for mapsource. It's not paper maps but could help you in your search for more info. There is also a GPX to PCX5 converter software for getting waypoints from geocaching.com and EASY GPS into mapsource.

  6. I'm currently developing a Garmin Product ID Registry for those that create custom maps for Garmin units. Below is a brief explanation. Input can be posted on www.keenpeople.com in the forums.

     

    The product ID registry will be a database available on a first come first server basis. Users will be able to register their website and obtain a "Product ID" for use in the registry of the Mapsource product. This is unofficial and not approved by Garmin. The purpose of this registry is for those that create custom maps for Garmin Units to be able to have a unique product ID and not conflict with other 3rd party map creations.

     

    Currently this will be hosted on www.keenpeople.com under the GPS & Cartography section. Development is already underway and the following is currently proposed for for the database schema. Comments on this will be accepted during it's development cycle.

  7. I just expressed mailed my 2 legend units to garmin for screen scramble, unresponsive buttons and rubberband problems. One unit is in waranantee and when I played dumb and said they were bought abount a month from eachtother they said no problem and RMA'd them both. So hopefully when they both return repaired I can say good things about garmin for a change icon_smile.gif

  8. All depends on what youre looking for. It's a patch antenna which some say is not as good as the quad helix. GPSInformation.net shows pros/cons for each one.

     

    I have a legend and it works fine. I use it for the car and Geocaching. Sometimes it does loose lock however I've also been inside hotels and been able to get a lock. From what I've read in the threads there are many things that impact the signal.

     

    GPSInformation.net has a lot of good information. You can also go to my links page and find all sorts of links including information on how to build some external antennas for the legend should the need arise. I've not really needed to build one but YMMV.

  9. I investigated this myself. I never did get around to buying anything to increase the reception. There is a commercial product available at http://www.freshtracksmaps.com/antenna-vortech.htm which is really meant for a car. I have no idea on it's success..

  10. Well My legend has been on over 120 caches now and I too am having problems. In fact after next week when I return from TN it's going back to garmin for warantee repair. I love the unit and I'm at about the 6 month mark and the rubberband is starting to go. The display is also acting flaky which a light slam corrects (something loose obviously).

     

    I have 2 legends and they both have problems. The second unit (out of warantee) has the same rubberband problem and the click stick requires a thousand pounds of pressure to click "OK" on it. The directions seem to be fine.

     

    Overall I'm going to really gripe at garmin when I call them and see if they will do both untis under warantee since I can easily point out that there must be some serious manufacturing problems to have similar problems on both units.

  11. I have 2 legends myself. Both work awesome. value and function was really the main point of the Legend.

     

    As far as the inside of the car bit, I have seen MANY threads on here about people who have different cars have different results. Some have antennas in the windsheild which affect results.

     

    Personally I get much better Reception on my Caravan than I do my Lumina Van.
