  1. Sorry im grumpy lately. 1. Nanos hidden in places where bigger caches could easily go. 2. Nanos hidden in uninteresting or boring locations. This game is all about creativity and I find so many nanos on benches or nanos near telephone poles. Woopty yay....thanks for brining me here, i guess. 3. Caches hidden in relatively BAD places. Don't make me stumble through homeless encampments and drug dens in the forest to find your film canister. Also i bring my kid....don't make us perilously dance on a median strip on a busy road looking for stuff. 4. I am not a fan of climbing trees to get caches. 5. Ivy hides are still the worst.
  2. Hey there. My son and I are looking at placing a sprinkler head cache in a small park in our neighborhood. There is one....just one real sprinkler in the park. And we felt that is we placed ours at the opposite end of the park near a 'pick up your dog mess' sign.' we could accurately relay to people how to get the cache. Also the use of the hint would help. AND we have even thought about somehow making the sprinkler head have a geocaching logo on it or on the lid somehow. So do you think we should shy away from this idea...? We are sick of finding magnetic nanos in our journeys. They are often poorly placed where a bigger cache could easily go and many times they take you to a place that just isnt interesting and sometimes scary. So we are trying to be creative AND make something WORTH figuring out. Input appreciated. Thanks.
  3. We made a onesie for our boy that said "I've been told that I like Geocaching!"
  4. yeah, redoing a cache that you really liked is great because you know what fun it was for you...its double sometimes for the kids. you can judge better than going out and finding an easy nano with nothing in it.
  5. When I get a chance to cache with my nephew and niece and we happen to dnf...i usually drop a line like 'well at least we got to hang out together' or ya know its a nice place....at least we got to come here and enjoy this together.' Then all is not dependant on the cache and we can really just appreciate our time and the journey. I feel like that is one of the most important parts of caching anyway. And it sort of teaches them to be good sports.
  6. I agree don't get discouraged. I have found a cache like this. one thing they did was made it a multi-cache and you had to get the screwdriver at the first stop. So there's an idea for you.....and., you could even put right on the box in a sly way.... like 'geo-electric cache inc.' cach-e-lectric' or something so that us non muggles would be easily clued in that it was the right box. sounds like a fun cache. good luck and dont listen to all these old winers....invent a new and unique cache that shows them just how creative you are!!! once you do it right many if us will appreciate you for the cool hide....not just another ammo box or film cannister.
  7. Sometimes you find a micro (like those bolt ones) and you are amazed at the work that the hider put in. Other times you find a simple box magnet in a goofy or boring location and you feel that the hider is just plain lazy. This happens with caches of all shapes and sizes. It seems like it happens in my area with more micros than not. ALL hiders should take care to be more creative. It is the way the game should be played. Don't just take the same old approach to a hide....make it a little more fun than all the other caches. Take pride in the art of the hide. There is a local hider who really changes things up. Some of his micros are right out in the open and they log DNF's all day long. His cleverness is really what inspires me to hide. His finds are like well deserved smileys. If you can't get that creative with your hide....at least bring people there for a good reason....something pretty or historic. Give us something. Not just a film canister in a parking lot/skirt. these ARE great for the numbers but at least give us something really worth it. There are a million active caches. I realize they can't all be Saks 5th Avenue quality....sometimes you gotta have 7-11. Just put them in cool places.
  8. It is bad luck to cache without the wifey. Seriously...she may not always find them but I find them when she is with me. Caching alone, I have a way harder time. She is like a good luck charm. Cute too. I think I will keep her. Ha ha. We discovered caching together...we bought our gps with our wedding gift money...and have cache all over for our honeymoon and other vacations. LOVE IT!
  9. I have not been able to run a Pocket Query all morning....now it's afternoon and still no luck. Anyone else having this problem? Or am I just the last in a very long line...lol
  10. Yikes. I don't know about "banned". It is your personal taste. I would not mind going for these caches because I am respectful of the site. And personally death does not creep me out. Other forum posts suggest understanding where the cache is and if that makes you uncomfortable then skip it and go on. Here in the Bay Area (SF) we have a cache in a park where lots of homeless people hang out. At first I was upset at this cache. Why would the owner place it here? I would not take my kids here...Darn him! Hobos and Hippies everywhere yuk. But then I realized that the problem was mine. I had a hard time with the people in the park. They are PEOPLE for crying out loud. Not crazy freaks. And they would probly not even realize I was there. Same goes for a memorial site. If it creeps you out....don't go. If you can be respectful and find the peace and solitude of a place then go for it. These are not necessarily places to fear. We should respect them. We are all gonna die after all and we might just end up in one. I would love for my family to make a cache out of my final resting spot. That would be a cool gift to people. You could at least put the coordinates on my tombstone!!! Thanks.
  11. I just gotta say....CACHEMATE might be the best 10 bucks I ever spent on software. We used to use the palm to read the Ebook Reader...That thing was bulky and weird. Then the spinner software which basically took all night to convert caches made it really hard for spontaneous caching. NOW with cache mate I can run out the door rather quickly and it is easy and even fun to use. dadgum. Thanks to whoever made that software.
  12. I got the serial cable from garmin....and then I ordered a USB connector from ebay. It was a generic one and it only cost about 9 bucks. Good luck. Radio Shack has about the same thing for 19 bucks. I hope this helps.
  13. Fortunately, it wasn't a sweeping insult at your savior. It was a sweeping insult at all sweatshop-manufactured goods with your savior's name on them, something I'm sure he would have disapproved of. In addition, it was a sweeping insult at people using geocaching to further their own spiritual agendas, which I believe is against the guidelines. Pretty bigoted to intimate that all "Jesusware" as you call it is produced by "sweatshops" and Jesus would not approve of it. Pretty bigoted to regard anything with Jesus' name on it is "trash." At least you openly admit that it WAS AN INSULT. Talk about guidelines, perhaps you should consider the forum guidelines. Your "Savior" doesn't really offend me. Sometimes the 'rabid dogs' that use and abuse his name bug me. So much so that when I find "Jesusware" in a cache I do get a little offended. Not because of your savior but because I fell like it is being pushed on me. I am, after all a rather captive audience at that point. I am not part of that religion. My kids are not part of that religion. I usually remove this from caches. Just as you would probly do if I were to leave Buddhist materials in there. On Topic: I have also found some drug pariphenalia (sp) like rolling papers in a cache. I really hope that this is just a San Francisco thing. It's really a shame to think that this could one day place our beloved game in jeopardy. And I really feel for the person who left this stuff in a cash. Keep it at home! Not in a cache for our kids.
  14. Paintball is far more expensive! Gun/Marker upwards of $1500.00 Mask $70 Field Fees just to play $30-$40 Paint for one day $40-50 Air $20 Pods and Belts $45 Not to mention clothing pads and repairs....Unknown Probly $200 Weekends will run you about $150 if nothing goes wrong with your equipment. Also included are gas to get you to the field, food for the day, and any medical bills for things like sprained ankles or serious knee injury. I played paintball for over ten years. Geocaching is so much cheaper. GPS $100 new or $40 on ebay Plastic containers $10 Stuff from my junk drawer....uhm free. I don't use a car to geocache...I live in San Francisco so PT (Public Transit) is great for caching. I have a monthly PT card which I would use for work anyway. Plus the risk of serious injury is way less....and I never really have a bad day. And my whole family can play. This is the best cheap sport I ave found. Maybe its different if you live somewhere else. We can also play on vacation to see new and cool things that books and stuff don't tell you about. later.
  15. I am a budget cacher. My fiance and I are both fulltime students. I can totally see the original poster's point. I think a family membership should be something that could happen. For the recent poster saying that if you don't want to pay for this and that then you are cheap....well maybe so. But this isn't paintball! One of the things that attracted me to this hobby was the cheapness of it. Yeah the GPS was a 100 bucks...and surethe membership is a measly 3 bucks a month. I used to spend 150 for one day of paintball and I would usually play 8 times a month! So cheapness is good for everyone! My problem with these membership caches isn't about logging them. I have been to a few here in my area and I was saddly unimpressed! One of them wasn't even hidden well enough to escape vandalism. The others were not very imaginative. What the hell is extra about them anyway? There was nothing unusual about them! Why even be seperate if your not going to work hard on them? Members only caches seem egotistical and retarded. And until I find a good one I will firmly stand on the viewpoint that they are a geocaching waste of breathe.
