  1. Agreed. But a 1T can be absolute, right? Wheel-chair accessible And a 5T can be absolute, right? Scuba to a shipwreck A cliff-side repel Everest Soyuz to the Space Station What else? What are specific 5T's? Thanks for all of the comments so far...
  2. Just looking for a fresh perspective... What is a 5-Terrain cache to you?
  3. I don't know how accurate it is, but here's a list: http://www.zinnware.com/HighAdv/Geocaching/most_caches_found.php?OrderBy=hides&Ordering=DESC
  4. FWIW, you can set up multiple notifications with various starting points. It's not ideal, but you only have to do it once.
  5. Oh, how about this? 1) Solve a puzzle 2) Cache is missing 3) Log a DNF 4) CO archives the cache because it's missing 5) That always make me laugh. Back on topic, I prefer a challenge both off and on the court. My favorite puzzle caches are the ones that would be a favorite even if there had been no puzzle. Typically, those that are clever enough to create a good puzzle are also clever enough to make an awesome final hide.
  6. Others have covered the rule aspect of your question. As for your thrill-seeking desire... there is plenty of thrill to be found here. You just have to know how to find it. With a brief search you'll find that there are other similar websites, but chances are good that there are more of your kind of caches here than anywhere else. The only problem is the multitude of less thrilling caches that you may have to overlook to find the ones that most interest you. Here are a few tips off the top of my head. There are countless other threads with additional information on how to find the best caches. Note that Premium Members have features to help query caches Look for high Difficulty/Terrain ratings Read the logs and view the image gallery to gauge quality Once you find a cache you enjoy, look for others by the same owner Review bookmark lists for "favorites" or "adventure" caches Talk to other cachers in the area Look into multicaches or Earthcaches. Sometimes they can be adventurous.
  7. I once had some trauma to an eye and was temporarily blinded for a few weeks before a very fortunate 100% recovery. During that time, I was very protective of my other eye. I spend a lot of time in the woods and I understand your concerns. I also know 3 different men that have lost an eye. I was very surprised to learn that fact for all 3 of them. You'd never know it if they didn't tell you. While your situation is certainly life changing, it doesn't have to impact the things you do. If geocaching is fun now, it will still be fun then. Last month, I saw a blind lady at a zoo. I almost felt guilty chuckling when she said "I smell the elephants". It surprised me at the time, but I think it's absolutely great. You may be interested in the story of Steve Pigott. Steve is an evangelist that lost an eye to cancer (with very little notice). He is a highly motivational and quite humorous speaker. I have heard him speak in person about his situation and know that he has some Audio CD's available as well as downloadable MP3's. You might want to check it out to hear his perspective on things. I wish you the best...
  8. I use PQ's to aid in targetting caches. (and I use apostrophes to make acronyms plural ) I have no strong feelings about it, but it could be convenient to have some of my PQ's aggregated in Google Reader along with local news and Dilbert cartoons. It would amount to me hitting GC.com a little less which would save me a miniscule amount of time, but hey that's the purpose of RSS. Though, in this case, the data is tied to a user and/or geography which does not make it a good candidate for RSS, especially when coupled with Nate's point about the undercutting of a Premium Feature. It's fun to think about, but it may not be practical.
  9. Yes, the notifications will make you aware when new caches are published. Note, that you must set up an additional notification for each cache type. Also, you may want to create a Pocket Query to look for caches that have not yet been found. Based on one of your hides, there are currently 6 caches that have not been logged within 30 miles of you. Good luck!
  10. I could see the value in an RSS feed for Pocket Query results. This would serve your purpose as well as many others.
  11. I cache... 1) to experience quality time with my family. 2) to experience quality locations. 3) for the challenge of the hunt. Ulmer had a great idea and his hide was appropriate for the first. I wonder what, if any, differences there would be today if his hide was an epic adventure or an LPC.
  12. Yes, this is a great idea. Allowing the cache owners some control on what lists display on their own caches would be a great addition (or alternative) to the rating system.
  13. I agree with you, there should be, but I would also like to keep the choice of each type of cache. If I may add another question to this topic, is 50 miles the outer limit for notifications? I cannot seem to extend my notifications beyond that distance? Thanks and I hope I am not taking thread too far off topic. I, too, agree that there should be. But, like KK&M, I also would like to keep the choice of each cache type. And KK&M: 50 miles is the limit. But you can set up multiple notifications with different base coordinates. For example you can have a notification for 50 miles from Bristol, TN and another for 50 miles from Asheville, NC.
  14. Add my vote for that enhancement. But here's something else to consider. For some reason, I often find myself going to a cache page and finding my own log. Wouldn't it be great if your own log would always show by default? That way, there wouldn't be the extra step of "Show All Logs"... at least for this scenario.
  15. Sounds good to me. Here's a Lackey's perspective on Geocaching RSS feeds... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=3821671
  16. To get to the other hide. Also, on topic... we have been known to enjoy chicken while geocaching.
  17. Leave a container full of dimes nearby (okay quarters ). That solves the money issue. Great idea using the phone. The possibilities are endless.
  18. As someone who caches in your area, I would be most interested in any springs with a high concentration of gold nuggets. Also, you might consider that you're not too far from the Tennessee Valley Divide... Holston flows toward the Tennessee River and the New River flows toward the Ohio. It could be interesting to find a good spot on that divide. Also, the Tennessee Valley Divide meets the Eastern Continental Divide making a three way split. So, in summary, I suggest scouting out those places until you find some gold nuggets and leave them for the FTF'er.
  19. Nope, it's anonymous. Yep, I'd say you're right about that. And J-Way, KK&M's list is indeed public and shared. It's just been voted off the screen (like mine). If you click "View all # bookmark lists..." from a cache page you'll see it, but since it received bad ratings it no longer shows on the screen. I imagine that is the reason for the negative ratings... simply to get them off the cache page. It's a valid concept, yet easily abused. Personally, I enjoy seeing personal lists like FTF's, My Solved Puzzles, and Challenge type lists. The challenge lists are even useful if you are working on the challenge yourself. It's obvious that some folks don't appreciate them, but it wasn't obvious to me until I just happened to stumble across the negative remarks on my own lists after reading a KK&M post from another thread. It would have been nice to realize this as it was happening. Hence, the request for the notification. And J-Way, I hope you enjoyed SoCal as much as we did recently. I said to someone there "Nice day, isn't it?". And they said "it's always like this". I'm not sure about Chattanooga but here in Bristol we've had nothing but rain since we returned.
  20. Thanks for the support. And yes, as a cache owner I would also like to be notified when my cache is added to a public list. (And when images are uploaded, but that's another topic)
  21. I agree that some method of organizing photos would be beneficial whether it utilizes folders or something else entirely. There are cachers in my area that have discontinued or slowed down on adding photos to the GC gallery because third-party sites are sometimes easier to upload, easier to organize, and easier to share.
  22. We usually find it wrapped around a tupperware container under a pile of sticks in the woods.
