  1. As a camper, hiker, woodcarver and knife collector I have to say that a good pocketknife is worth it's weight in gold. I think they are great cache items. I carry a Gerber knife everyday, but I also have several other brands that are high quality and durable.

I also throw knives and 'hawk for sport. My son is five and has a very healthy respect for my knives, both throwing and working. He does not carry his own yet because he tends to lay everything down and not remember where he put it, but that is a judgement call on my part, not his. Like someone said earlier in this thread...it's all about the parental responsibility and discretion.

  2. I have taken things out of my caches to clean them up and make room. I have even gone after an item in my husband's cache because it was one of Fergus's chain mail items, but it was already gone. icon_razz.gif

I would like to pose the same question about travel bugs. If you know there is a bug in your cache and you are going in another direction do you go get it to help it along or let the next finder have it?

  4. Fly with the Eagles is a great cache location. The cache is a normal type one, but the view from the nearby overlook is super. The whole valley just opens up in front of you.

Also, White Rocks is a cache with a cool view. I haven't found it myself, but I have hiked there in the past.

    Happy hunting!

  5. Received this email from Caroline and thought you all would be interested in checking it out (hopefully) on Thursday.

    Bonnie and Greg:

The Centre Daily Times MAY be running the geocaching story on Thursday, 20

    June.

I'll be on vacation then, so I won't know if it's a go, but you could check

online on Thursday: www. centredaily.com (under Living).

    Thanks again for your help,

  6. Great pictures! My son recently saw some garbage clean up crews (from the local prison) on a roadside and asked if they were trashing out! I explained that they were getting their exercise and cleaning up.

We carry bags with us when we hunt and/or hide caches so that we can trash out. Obviously, some places need more attention than others, but we do carry out more than we carry in most of the time.

  7. My husband creates his own cache cards for each cache he hides (plus his virtual). When a cacher finds his cache they can take one to keep to show that they've been there. You can only get them if you go to the cache (or email him the virtual cache answer) and that makes them harder to come by. He has had positive responses from them. There is no personal information on there, but each cache is pictured in it's hiding spot and with the coords.

  8. Interesting....a few weeks ago the Centre Times reporter called me too. She didn't mention going on a cache hunt, but did ask all kinds of questions about why I feel it's a family sport, where we hunt primarily and if I know other cachers. She did mention talking to CCCooper. I am curious to see how this article comes out. Since she has talked to several people and even been on a cache hunt she should have some interesting newbie perspectives.

  9. Just a note to let you know that there is intrinsic value in the unusual! I was unable to sleep last night and close to morning made my way to The Unusual section of the forums. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time! I particularly liked the Egads - naked people topic. Oh my, the mental images were enough to send me howling (with laughter) into the night!

    Thanks all! icon_biggrin.gificon_eek.gif

  11. Clayjar: It's easy to see that you are more interested in the experience of caching than the numbers. I think that is a good example of how to participate in the sport and keep the rest of your life in focus. Personally, my finds are low, but I enjoy going on the hikes and hunts with my family (gnbrotz & Arkman) more than the actual finding of the cache.

I like geocaching. It's fun and a good tie in to camping and getting away from work/society. I can't imagine dedicating enough time to it to log 100 finds in a year, let alone 1000. I would love to be able to hop in the car and go cache for a weekend every month, but it just isn't possible for me. Too much going on in life...that isn't meant as a whine, just a fact. icon_wink.gif

Good topic. Good luck getting to 100. I'll be watching!

  13. ...my count is low, but if you look at my dates you'll see I've been caching for over a year. Is that a newbie? How many caches do you have to have to not be a newbie? The numbers can be deceptive in that regard.

Also agree that I can base my ability to do the cache on what other cachers that I know have said or done. Several local cachers may say one my husband hid was easy, but I know them and I know him and I know I won't be attempting to find it any time soon. icon_eek.gif

  15. Loved the picture of the Hardy cache and agree with the ammo can conclusion. They are great for all types of caches and they are tough! My hubby, gnbrotz, hides his caches in them.

I like the plastic drink containers. If you have kids you probably know what I'm talking about when I say the Kool-Aid/CountryTime Lemonade screw-top containers. They are waterproof and durable. They only work for small caches, but they are sturdy little things and once the kids have devoured the kool-aid it costs nothing to recycle it into a geocache container.

I would love to hop on a plane to Washington just to take the Hardy challenge! icon_biggrin.gifnull

  17. I have to admit that when I saw the masses of people descending daily on the WTC site I was disgusted by their morbid curiousity. I thought visiting the site was something that could be done respectfully, but the media circus about the crowds made it seem like a tourist attraction of the worst kind.

When the cache was placed at the Flight 93 site here in PA I told my husband I didn't want to go. He eventually convinced me to go and I am glad he did. We visited the site on New Year's Day 2002 and I was moved to tears. It reinforced my already firm belief that the soldiers we have fighting for us are doing the right thing. No child should have to grow up knowing their daddy or mommy died in some remote field in the middle of some state hundreds of miles from their home. However, if that child grows up knowing that thousands of Americans consider him/her a hero how much better is that?

If the cache is there to provide a chance for education and personal improvement - fine. If it's there because the hider has some morbid fascination with death and destruction then it's just wrong. Are you placing the cache there out of respect or to get noticed? Is it a gesture of good will and honor to those who died or just a good site because it's this week's hot story?

Would you place a cache at the site of a murder? Would a cache in Brentwood honor Nicole Brown Simpson? I doubt it. Would you want a cache at the site where your dad, mom, sister, brother, child, etc. was killed by a drunk driver?

Just some things to think about.....

  18. These caches are awesome. As an avid reader I have considered a book cache, but I'm also a book hoarder because I reread and even use the books I have as sources for educational, personal writings, etc...I have discovered several books on the local bookstores clearance table lately that didn't interest me alot but would provide varied reading materials for a cache. Thanks for the ideas and the caches. It gives me a lot to think about when I place my own!

  19. FF: I have a really annoying cat....can she qualify as a dog toy to put in your cache? Seriously though, it's a cute idea. I see a lot of people out hiking with their dogs now. In fact, I was kissed just today by an overeager Lab.

  20. The picnic picture is great.

In regard to CCCooperAgency they just posted a find on the A Life Given For Freedom Cache placed by Pulaski. They posted a picture of themselves with the cache location. I think you were both right in your use of pronouns!
