COINTEST: The Stop Lurking and come Introduce Yourself
keewee replied to keewee's topic in Trackables
welcome to the geocoin forum...i also have more than 20 coins, and look forward to trading or buying one of yours when they come available ! Hi nickgatt and welcome to the forums The geocoin collecting bug can be a serious one... 2 years of pent-up-wanting-to-collect-coins is dangerous! drneal - you are missing a few zero's from that number.... wouldn't 20,000 be closer than 20? (Actually - just how many do you have?, and is it true the corner of your house is sinking under the weight?) -
They are geocaching.com trackable and I guess people are collecting them, so IMO they should be (even though I hate the things)

You must have hit the 'Start New Topic' button rather than the 'Add Reply' button. It use to happen a lot

Looks like Hogwild Stuff has shut down for good . This is what the home page says now: February 9, 2013 The time has come to call it quits for Hogwild Stuff which has been close to dormat for the last year. There are several outstanding orders and they will be filled and mailied on February 11, 2013. We are not currently answering Hogwild domain emails but Steve Moran can be contacted at smoran at gmail dot com. Thanks for all the support through the years. Steve Not unexpected but sad to hear.

Here are some comments on why I liked the site I use to use (Geocoin Collection) before it disappeared, and what they could have done to make it even better (as there were a couple of features on cointracking which Geocoin Collection lacked). This was when I had thousands of coins listed on Geocoin Collection - so I was a heavy user of it. (Don't judge me... my addiction is very well under control these days) ...geocoincollection has quality control, such that coins go up with their correct name (usually) and aren't duplicated under multiple entries (usually). - this is where cointracking fails IMO - too often the coin names on cointracking were just what someone *thought* they were, and frequently they were wrong. I put some effort in to make sure I have the correct coin and edition names by entering a Tracking ID on geocaching.com and seeing what it lists the coins as. This is not always correct as I have come across several examples lately where the designer/manufacturer of the coin called it something slight different to what it was listed on geocaching.com as. I also search thru vendor emails, the forums and other places to get it as right as I can. OK, it does occasionally happen that the name of the coin isn't quite right, or that the finish is list incorrectly or twice, but the guys at geocoincollection are very quick to fix these when they are pointed out to them. They are very responsive to adding new coins (you report it to them in the forums and they add it first opportunity they get (daily?). Again - quality control is crucial - especially if you decide to turn this into a paid listing site That all said, I do like how cointracking has more options to classify coins under (incoming, outgoing, keeping, available, seeking, pending). And there are a few more fields to add information to against coins, but these seem to be somewhat confusing as I see people use these fields in very different ways - which shows that their purpose is not quite clear. (Just what really is an Edition - and why do some people classify the same coin as being an Edition coin and others don't! Does Numbered mean trackable? Some people use it to record the number is it is numbered, some use it to record the Tracking prefix, some just answer yes/no) So here are some of the things that I did like on cointracking that geocoin collection didn't have, but as I mention so of the fields were used differently by different people - so it would definitely pay to ensure consistency between coins. Hope this is useful to you

That's a good idea that I hadn't thought of. It won't be any harder to set up in the future but I may as well do it now. How do you think it should be set up? Should there be a separate pagination for each letter? What about the facet filter categories? I would definitely do a different pagination for each letter, and if possible allow it to display more items per page, because once there are even quite a few hundred coins in there so 'Letters' will have 40 or 50 coins under them - especially 'G'! Unsure about the facet filter categories - what do most people search using? For me I am always searching using some element of the name rather than a feature or set of features (am I understanding facet filtering correctly?). But some people may well find it useful.

I wonder if multi-leveled should be another feature? Don't see it often, but it was touted as a feature of the Tranquilities and also Circle of Four. And, with all the geocoins being put in I wonder if you should split to alphabetical pages sooner rather than later (0-9, A, B, C...)

Either "Standard - Satin Silver" etc. or just "Satin Silver" etc.. Don't just call it "Standard" because the validation doesn't allow multiple Editions with the same Geocoin/name combo. Thanks for asking! Thanks for that Hey, the AE Tranquility I submitted last night hasn't shown up - should I do it again?

Geocoins originally weren't designed to be collectible, but then I bet the first stamps weren't either! Geocoins are like any other collectible item - stamps for example. Some people collect stamps, and some people send them on. The issue with geocoins is that those that have been sent on by their owners - with the intentions that they keep travelling - are frequently stolen by bad geocachers, or they get caught up somehow (muggled cache, new cacher not knowing what to do with a coin, someone who has taken a hiatus from caching or finished with it entirely, etc So collecting your own owned geocoin is not bad, or against the rules or anything like that. But collecting others geocoins is.

Yes - I hear SOME have very large collections!!!!!! Have you not noticed that one corner of your house has sunk by 2 foot???
-
OK, I have a geocoin I am about to add - there are a number of Standard Editions, a Limited Edition, an XLE and an artists. Under editions should I list them as "Standard - Satin Silver", "Standard - Satin Gold", etc; or do I just list them as "Standard" without a metallic differentiator?
-
Hi there, Did this geocoin ever get made? Would absolutely love to get some!!!
-
Brushed Gold and Brushed Copper finishes please
-
Nope - it's back again now... Yeah I'm having some problems with memory overload, and upgrading would require a hefty increase in the monthly hosting fee . I'm trying to work something out right now. On a separate note, Gun finish has been added. Thanks A feature that would be very useful for those entering geocoins would be a copy function - when entering various editions from a coin it would be useful to enter all the details once, and then use a copy function to create a partially filled out template for the next edition being entered.

Did we kill the site?
-
Need a new metal option please - Gun I've come across it being used a handful of time, it is similar, but not as dark as Black Nickel is usually quite shiny
-
I was thinking of that. Will do tomorrow . Should that be a geocoin or edition thing? Good question. By and large usually it is always from the same vendor, BUT... I know of a couple of examples with the Compass Roses where some editions were from CoinsandPins and some were from USA Geocoins... Make it a geocoin things and where the oddities come up then both vendors can be listed against the geocoin.
-
Is it worth adding a Vendor field also? Often the geocoins are designed by an individual and the the vendor will have the coin manufactured and will sell it?
-
Also, I see that you've been putting the name of editions as part of the geocoin name. My idea was to have the geocoins be more generic and the editions more specific. I'll update some of the ones that you've submitted so far, but let me know if that makes sense. Thank you! The problem is with a generic name, when I try to add another version/edition of that coin (eg gold, silver, Ant gold... or Standard Ed, Limited Ed) using just the generic name it will not let me as the generic name already exists. Otherwise, how am I able to enter multiple versions of the same coin please? It is entirely possible I am doing something wrong, and it is your site so you get to make the rules (which I don't have a problem with - and I think is critical to its success for the exact reason you've raised here - consistency ) Let me try to figure this out. I think the problem is that after you add a geocoin + one edition with the wizard, you cannot add any additional editions until I approve the geocoin. After I approve it you should be fine - try adding an edition to one of the geocoins that is already in the gallery. Does that sound like the issue that you are having? If so, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do about it for now - a geocoin just be approved once initially until additional editions can be added. I'll try to think of a workaround for this. Let me know your thoughts Yes - that may well bit it. Will see what I can do to test that... Yes - that is definitely the issue. Feel free to edition away my entries (sorry for creating extra work for you)

I've got Antique Bronze there. Do you think there should a plain Bronze as well? Yes please - my GeoTag that I have just entered is Bronze. But as you have gold, nickel etc listed as Polish Gold, etc then many it should be Polished Bronze?
