  1. How does one do this? I clicked on Birdseye within BC and it didn't offer to download images, rather sent me to the BE webpage to purchase a subscription. I have BC 3.2.2* if that matters. *Upgraded to BC 4.0.5, no difference. Thanks
  2. This pair really makes your point, "crushes"!!! I went to Brent Lake in GE to see for myself, exact results you show. One note, I've seen a dramatic improvement in GE imagery since 2011, so perhaps part of the reason. Given the low resolution of a GPS screen, how does this translate in the field? Thank you for the effort.
  3. I'm 90% sure you can take those geotagged images from Google Earth and put them in your GPS as tagged images. Haven't tried yet, planning to do so when I go to Hawaii.
  4. The Amazon reviews for Birdseye are almost universally damming, some as recent as Dec. 2013. Basically slow to download and poor resolution. Has this now changed? How do the images compare to Google Earth?
  5. I bought the 62s (without camera), I will be using my Canon DSLR for photos and then geotagging them at a later date...even if I could, the file sizes would be way too large to upload to my unit (30mb each); however, I didn't know that you could preload images...that might be helpful , thanks! I have that same problem with the FZ47, 12MP images. I use Irfanview to batch downsize the images I want in the GPS and it puts those in a different folder, leaving the originals untouched. Virtually any modern image processor will do the same thing. For your dSLR images of 600 x 400 pixels would work very well, perhaps 10KB each.
  6. These Oregon 450 screenshots might be of interest, I believe the 62 will act/show the same thing except of course buttons instead of touch screen. The first screenshot shows the map view with over a dozen geotagged photos. Touching any of the photo symbols, #2, shows the red pin and a image banner at the top. Touching that banner, brings up the associated image, #3. All-in-all a terrific solution by Garmin. FWIW, BaseCamp also shows the same info, icons and photos. You could preload geotagged photos, say from Google Earth, before going to Israel for reference.
  7. Make your own, most of the information is a free download from various state and federal agencies. Then you can distribute them for free.
  8. As a curious bystander, how do you use these things? Thanks
  9. Oh ye of little imagination! I have an older eTrex, move the cursor and press select, is equivalent to an OR touch. The key is the photo viewer and photo symbols, not the touch.
  10. You started a thread on a topic of great interest to me. I'm going to share my Oregon 450 examples to see how the 62s and eTrex 20/30 compare. I have a Nuvi which accepts GeoTagged photos, but it behaves totally different from the Oregon. See the attached Oregon screenshots: The first screenshot shows the map view with over a dozen geotagged photos. Touching any of the photo symbols, #2, shows the red pin and a image banner at the top. Touching that banner, brings up the associated image, #3. All-in-all a terrific solution. Do the 62s and eTrex behave the same?
  11. BaseCamp goes on your PC and is a free download from Garmin. Either PC or Mac. It's huge and on a PC requires MS NetFramework, another huge piece of software, also a free download.
  12. Are you aware that 7.5 min maps are exactly 24,000:1 scale, 24K?
  13. So why replace the 60CSx? Buttons worn off? The 62 and OR have a few extra features, but not more accurate. I have a 3-YO 450, with no plans to upgrade. But since you have a 60, the 62 would be more comfortable for you.
  14. Well Allen, for me the answer is both!!! A GPS with a map inside is "The Cats Meow" I got my first GPS in 2007 and stoped using paper maps shortly thereafter. Only "24K" you say, you can make more detailed maps but 24K gets me all over the west whether on trail or off. I'd suggest you start at 24K and go more detailed if needed.
  15. If you can live with the straight line distance, rather than the route distance, simply place a red pin. Your OR will calculate the distance and bearing from the blue triangle to the red pin, and as you move that D&B is continually updated and displayed on the top. To move the red pin, either tap in another location or move the map under the pins current location. Neither is terribly precise.
  16. FWIW, I suspect that temp spec is an accuracy issue, not a functional issue. That means below -15C, Garmin cannot guarantee that the GPS will meet its accuracy spec. All GPS receivers have a clock crystal which is temperature compensated. The broader the temp swing the harder it is to compensate. A cost issue.
  17. Unless Garmin has altered the way maps work from previous models, any new maps are enabled automatically. If you know the answer to the OP's question, why don't you help rather than trolling legitimate suggestions?
  18. Probably need to turn on the map. Basic process: Setup > Maps > Map Info > check/uncheck the map to be activated/deactivated.
  19. Sounds like Garmin SOP, just like my OR 450. Gaps or missing track segments but the full track downloads to MapSource. Because my 450 creates such excellent tracks I've learned to live with this bazaar field behavior. You could report this to Garmin, no telling the results. As to your track file, look here: Garmin > GPX > Current > Current.gpx Happy tracking!!!
  20. An eTrex 20 because it's the smallest/lightest color mapping Garmin that uses AAs or the Fenix which is a wristwatch sized GPS. Both will record tracks. I've never used either, so my knowledge is limited. Garmin's website is a good start, Amazon for user reviews.
  21. Totally agree. The brighter the light the better. Perhaps your 550 has a unique problem. Have you compared your 550 to another Oregon x50 unit? BTW, do you use the any of the light killing backgrounds images that come standard from Garmin? Stones or Foliage? The day I got my 450 (3 years ago) I replaced the background with white. Insert this JPEG in your Profiles folder and select it as a background:
  22. Good chuckle!!! That's how I feel about replacing my 450, some year Maybe!
  23. AFAIK, you cannot edit tracks inside your Oregon. Both MapSource and BaseCamp can do what you want via either the scissor tool to clip the track or the spreadsheet to delete one or more points. Both programs have dis/advantages relative to one another for other editing tasks. HTH
  24. You don't necessarily want the biggest screen, rather the biggest pixels. Bigger pixels will render the largest/easiest to read text. You can do a little math to arrive which screen has the biggest pixels. Keep in mind all Garmin's I've used allow you to customize the font size. Perhaps only on maps, not sure, not tested recently. Start with the GPSMAP 62/78 family, in the past these have had the largest pixels. I use an Oregon 450 which has among the smallest pixels, but got my bifocal upgraded and all is well.
  25. Contact Garmin, they have excellent telephone support.
