  1. Based on my current experience the answer is 3-4 weeks after Panoramio approves the photo. My first photo appeared as a tiny blue square today, along with several subsequent photos. The latest to show was submitted May 6. So even though there were many approved photos between May 6 and May 31, none of those after May 6 are showing. All approved photos May 6 and before do show. Perhaps this sample of one will help someone.
  2. Banks are now putting trackers in bags of money when they are robbed. Perhaps your favorite bank can help? Are you suggesting they would give him a bag of money so he can get the tracking device? Indeed, then the OP wouldn't need a tracking device, inasmuch as none are accurate enough to differentiate location in a 4 x 8 cell.

  4. Has anyone uploaded a photo to Google Earth, if so what is the time scale? Curious about uploading photos to Google Earth. Tons of photos of popular places almost none in remote areas. The uploading seems straight forward enough, click the upload link, that takes you to Panoramio, submit geotagged photo, add a title. It takes Panoramio a day to a week to dis/approve the image. Then what? How long after the Panoramio approval for the image to appear on GE? Am I missing something? Thanks for your input.
  5. If you use BaseCamp for your GeoTagging, then it will do a global time offset +/- 24 hours in 1 sec increments, assuming all the times have the same "error". As a bonus you can see the photos in map context and use it's photo viewer to scan the photos, all the while the map moves to the viewed photo. It is the main reason I have BC on my PC.
  6. I know almost nothing about the Fenix, isn't it basically a wristwatch? Please post a screenshot of the maps for all to see. Thanks
  7. Quite simple, unlike BaseCamp, which center on the map, your GPS centers on your current location. So unless you're in France you won't see the map. Your GPS should have a base maps, use it to scroll to France, then you'll see your France map on top of the base map. Let's assume you're in NYC, then you'll need to scroll across the Atlantic to see France.
  8. I suspect you're thinking of the Canon GPS addon, it plugs into the camera and mounts to the flash holder. I would expect it to works faultlessly and cost a good deal more than a 62s.
  9. Personally I've had great luck with BaseCamp geotagging. It will do +/- time offset in case you mis-set either clock. I'd also set your 50D for RAW + JPEG, if an option the smallest JPEG possible. That way you can use the photo viewer in BC. The viewer is map linked, index a photo and the map moves to match. I use Irfanview's batch function to create re-sized (800x600) JPEG's just for BC. You can then put those smaller images on your 62s for viewing, like this from an OR 450: The first screenshot shows the map view with over a dozen geotagged photos. Touching any of the photo symbols, #2, shows the red pin and a image banner at the top. Touching that banner, brings up the associated image, #3. Strongly suggest some testing before you leave. Oh, set your 62s to archive dalily, not when full, that way you'll have a series of dated files, much easier to wrap your mind around dates than multiple obscure tracks.
  10. While I've never installed CN, all the Topos I've installed require you first install the maps to a PC or Mac then use MapSource or BaseCamp to load the maps to your GPS. Why would CN be different?
  11. B&W vs color is not the issue, rather number of pixels. The CPU has to process the pixel array each time you move unless you have battery save on. Then it only refreshes when you activate the screen. On some earlier eTrexes, the color had better battery life than the B&W model. Likely a later generation CPU.
  12. MapInstall, which is a part of BaseCamp, creates the merged file, up to 4000 .img files. It names the file gmapsupp.img. You can then rename those gmapsupp.img files to AnyName.img and have a dozen or more on the SD card.
  13. I found it to be too dark on my OR 450, YMMV. Easy enough to do a free test, as follows: Have the latest version of BC installed Connect your OR450 Log into the BE server using BC Select an area to download BC will install that area into your OR Use the OR map display to turn on/off the image, just like a map
  14. Never used a Magellan, but on a Garmin the arrow points in the direction you're traveling. The GPSr needs several points to figure out your travel direction.
  15. I agree, but this issue has been discussed for years and Garmin either won't admit or won't solve the issue. Hence the two work-a rounds I suggested. Good Luck with Garmin.
  16. I've had this problem with my OR 450 and there are two solutions, assuming your 62 has the same base code as the OR: Revert to an earlier firmware that terminates the track with a power cycle. With my 450 that was v5.5. No free lunch here, v5.5 doesn't allow later gadgets like the Tempe. Go to Setup > Tracks > Auto Archive and set Daily. Again not perfect, two trips in the same day will still get the connecting line. You'll need to manually terminate the track as described in an earlier post. I realize you asked about the trip odo, it's controlled by the track function.
  17. Good linked article, this paragraph caught my eye: This really is "rocket science."
  18. Success!!! The root problem was BaseCamp, I had v4.0.5 and all I got was 100% failed download images, upgraded to v4.2.5 and got 100% downloaded images. Perhaps this will help someone. Loaded a small area to the OR 450, went outside in the bright sun and pretty much decided it wasn't very useful. More tests to follow. Thanks to all for the feedback.
  19. Thanks, Brain Lock. Had the same maps on for so long I'd forgot that simple procedure. Definitely no Birdseye images, will keep trying.
  20. I took another stab at downloading Birdseye. Several of my earlier statements appear incorrect, re loading a single demo. At the end of my unsuccessful download, I got a prompt to load a demo, said yes and perhaps the demo is loaded to my OR 450. How do I view Birdseye? Special menu item? I have firmware version 5.50 if that matters.
  21. So I tried again, started at midnight, after an hour this is what I had: Needless to say, I'm not encouraged. Not sure what all the fails mean. My instincts are to abandon the whole Birdseye experiment. BTW, why so many images? Are images your tiles?
  22. To me there is no "demo" but rather one "tile" if what I have pictured (green area) is a "tile"? One download is all you can save on BaseCamp w/o a subscription. Your terminology differs from what I see on the BE dialogs. Still have nothing to show, first time it failed, second time didn't get past pending. Will try again. If I'm able to download that one area as my "demo" that will be excellent. My biggest concern is download speed (~70Kb/s). I'd love broadband but when you live off-the-grid, any internet is good. Satellite and 4G LTE are both options but at double to triple the cost per month. So the $30/yr for Birdseye is not really an issue. Thanks for all your time/thoughts.
  23. Did you first install the download to MapSource or BaseCamp? You can NOT directly install the download file to your GPS. Did you zoom into the grid, 1-mile or less to see the detail.
  24. So far, so good. I connected my OR 450 and then started BaseCamp 4.x. When BC opened there was a banner at the top notifying me my OR 450 was BE compatible and would I like to go to the BE server. Clicked Yes and it displayed an overlay to extract. Using its tools I stretched the area to cover a planned 2014 backpack which crosses the Continental Divide 4-times. Started downloading then hung??? No mention of demo? Overall the tool had a short learning curve. Appears rather than "demo" you get a single image resident on BC at one time and it deletes the previous image. Found this on my second try. Here's my extract in case anything jumps out:
  25. The second image show some pixelation, but the first is impressive. However, I'm really interested in your subjective field experience. Do you use these or the topo or both? I have a OR 450 and I've loaded a number of geotagged photos, always viewable but never great. Pretty sure the 450 and 650 have the same resolution but not as bright as your 650. Also the 450 is portrait only, not both. Haven't figured out how to do this. I went to a 12,000 foot lake I backpacked to in 2013 and compared the 2011 and 2012 GE images. Just like your 2011 GE Brent Lake image night & day difference. So the source(s) that Garmin and Google use are getting better. Thanks for the reply.
