  1. Hi Cincol, good to hear that you are going to visit SA, caches always welcome. I also decided not to use black plastic bags at all, rather get waterproof camo bags, available at UKGeocachers.com I also think that placing the log-sheet inside a separate lock & lock container inside the bigger Lock & lock cache should do it. That is what I am going to do next, or go the "Devious Nano Way!"

Congratulations CrystalFairy on your 1000 finds and 100 cache hides. Hope you opened a bottle of bubbly...
  3. If you need electricity on top of the mountain it is quite easy to get for free. Use your tent pole, plant it upright, connect to computer and wait till the first thunder and lightning, usually you don't have to wait long...

Naa, you only need a Opel Astra, found some of the caches that were hidden with Land Rovers over the weekend at the Magoebaskloof Event. (It was fantastic, going back to find the unfounded ones soon.) Obviously I had to complain about the mud-tracks and the high "middelmannetjies" the 4x4 vehicles create!
  5. @ scuba dude, a great unit, you will not regret it. Get a 2 gig microSD card and you are set. Congratulations.

Hi Wazat, you can forget that ever to happen. Good idea though, but it is part of the game to try and read the cache hider's technique. One hider has this habit of moving 6 meters away after placing the cache, then to take an accurate reading of the offset waypoint. Problem is that he has 360 degrees of 6 meter offset possibilities. I believe "Vespax" has his own way of distorting the waypoint, others use impossible mystery/puzzle caches, I resort to "Nano" caches. You on the other hand uses a helicopter.
  7. A standing ovation for Wazat please, that is the dedication to ones work and sport that is lacking in South Africa. You earned my respect Wazat! Next time when that co-worker want you to stand in again, at Christmas time, you would know what to do... Congratulations on your 50th, it hasn't been easy we all know. Leon
  8. Thanks Gasman5, I will give that trick a go with our next cache adventure.
  9. Sippy Dippy, welcome to the forums. Now take a lesson from and old guy. If you want to find the cache first time, then you would make it a habit to calibrate the compass every time as you get out of the car. I will recalibrate again if I find the cache to be elusive and mark my words, the cache is suddenly in a totally different direction than you were first looking at. Neville can stop laughing now.
  10. Welcome to the forums Luvstoos. Did you come right with the coordinates? Remember to firstly change your GPS'r settings to display the coordinates in the format: Degree - minutes - decimals of a minute. That is the most commonly used method for geocaching. "Mark" the outside of your house, change the description and save as "Home". Useful for later navigational purposes.

Hi Cincol, Lend the one unit to your friend when geocaching, never a problem.

Having met "NotBlonde" I can vouch for him using a Nuvi exclusively, and he has a lot of finds and hides. But what he would modestly not tell you is that he has the same ability like a "Home-ing pigeon" to find the cache. He just ran up to it, while I would still fiddle to get a satellite lock. (Life ain't fair...)
  13. Hi Neville. I like to use the "Map" view to get to the vicinity of the map, up to about 500 meters I would guess. Nearer to the cache I find that the "Compass" view works better for me, after calibration.
  14. Congratulations Fish Eagle on the birthday and the provinces.

Hi Wazat, by the time you read this mail they would probably have reached 25000 caches. Enough to make any grown man cry... I just wonder whether they enjoy it as much as you do. Typical Americans - have to prove that they can do it better and faster than anybody else, I suppose they are sponsored by (STP) oil company.
  16. Oh schucks Wazat, how did the Gps broke? Did you slip in the rain and tumbled down, or did you use the unit as an umbrella?
  17. Use brass or preferable Stainless steel screws.

    Welcome

Hi Carbon Hunter, lots of places need caches, but not all are worthy, if somebody can't help you to maintain the cache then the reviewer will not allow the listing. But don't fret about that now, get as many caches as possible in EU, come back to RSA and take it from there. Enjoy Leon
  19. Log a "Should be Maintained", if no result log "Should be archived" - rules are for all to follow, especially the cache owner...

    Welcome

Hello Carbon Hunter Lots and lots of geocaches waiting for you in Gauteng. While you are that side of the waters try and buy a few of your own geocoins and in collaboration with a friend place your own geocache (which he will have to maintain) It really is a chance not to be missed, and not the advice I would normally give to a new geocacher. Leon
  21. Which I believe you really do need to get better co-ords Vespax. Better make a plan.

Mine are all valid excuses, but beware the "Fish Eagle" - he strikes at a furious pace and I put a wager on him for not even "puffing for breath."

    The Sandpit

Schucks, I have 245 reasons that prevent me from going, but wish you an enjoyable day of hunting.
  24. Hi Fish Eagle, I would suggest that you contact RedGlobe to help in the rescue of both cases. He would need to use the tractor for I am sure it is going to be muddy and slippery. On the side, thanks for that awesome cache "Lowveld View."
