  1. Dear forums.Groundspeak.com I have same the problem. I did step by step at above conversation, but it was not power on by battery (USB cable is OK). Please open mymind: why errors occur on ? Have any problem with user and preservation eqipment to occur the problem or only because hardware damage? I bought 60CSx two years ago, the last time I used it was 1 year ago and removed batery. But today, I insert new AA Alkeline Batery, it doesn't start. is there a way to overcome the problem without sending to Garmin? Thanks so much Have a nice week If a fresh set of batteries, and checking the flexing of contacts doesn't work. Try... 1) Take a pencil erase to the contact and the ends of the batteries to clean off any small amount of corrosion. 2) Check that the two halves of the case of the 60CSx are securely attached to each other. The battery compartment is in the aft half while the bulk of the electronics are in the front half with the screen and buttons. Internal to the unit there are contacts that connect the output of the battery to the front half of the device. If the two halves aren't securely attached the battery output might not properly connect to the electronics. On my 5 yr old 60CSx the plastic parts that accepts the screws had failed at several of the screws and the unit wouldn't start properly. After some disassembly I super glued the broken plastic parts and it works again. Good luck.
  2. gpsfiledepot is still active. A couple weeks ago someone had an issue with getting the confirmation through hotmail but it worked in gmail. Registration Issue Forum Thread

Those Garmin maps that have locking generally lock a specific map product to a specific serial number GPS receiver. Just because one can view the maps in Basecamp or Mapsource doesn't suggest they will viewable on any Garmin GPS receiver. There was a time were license agreements for Garmin maps allowed the maps to be used on two receivers. For those map products one must obtain a second unlock code from Garmin for the second receiver. To view the city navigator map on your eTrex 20 you will need an unlock code peculiar to the S/N of your eTrex. Your difficulties are not likely related to downloaded gpsfiledepot maps.
  4. GCGs? If you want to download the cache from the listing with the "GPX File" button, associate the gpx extension with the GSAK application in windows. Doing so will facilitate opeing the GSAK application and the gpx file import function in GSAK.
  5. There was a time, months ago, when I noticed the same thing, using the official app on an iPhone. I found if I edited the iPhone generated logs on-line, without making any change to the content, then they would be put back in the order I prefered. I haven't interspersed phone and on-line logs recently so my data points are months old.
  6. I save the gpx track files on my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx for 24hrs/day when I'm on week long trips on a boat. The files end up being about 500 kB/day and about 4000-5000 points. This last weekend in a 6 hour span of driving, hiking, and biking I generated a track file with about 2000 points (237 kB). While on the move it was generating a point every 5-10 seconds. While nearly stationary it may go several minutes between points. The 60CSx has user selectable settings for what criteria to use for generating the trackpoints. I have my record method set to "Auto" "Most Often." Other criteria are time or distance based. The gpx track files that I generate don't come close to the gigabytes of storage space I have available on my microSD card. Another consideration is battery life. I use rechargeable AA batteries in my 60CSx. When I'm on the week long trips on the boat I have the unit plugged into a power source so it isn't on batteries. I get more than 10 hrs of run time on a set of AA batteries but I don't think I get 20 hrs.
  7. I have heard that some garmin units have issues with the various files that Macs leave around (Mac dust) that are normally hidden from view of Mac users. My recollection is that there are free and non-free software packages that can help clean up the files. I'm not a Mac user and have no experience with these issues so good luck.
  8. In the 5+ years I have had a Garmin GPSMap 60csx I have had to reinstall software once. There have been software updates that I have always installed but only once did my unit get stuck in the acquiring satellites mode. I have read that will happen if the power button is pressed early in the startup process. I know when it happened to me I had pressed the power button to turn on the backlighting. The 60csx is a discontinued model. I imagine Garmin has refurbished units but I doubt if they have new ones.
  9. I don't know how one would delete or replace the basemap. The basemap isn't in a user accessible file system in the 60CSx. Are you sure the basemap is gone and not just disabled? To find out...setup, map, map setup - information (i), menu button, show/hide basemap. Yes, the basemap is useful when zoomed way out even when other maps are installed.
  10. Note that version 4.0.1 of the Garmin plugin doesn't work on a Mac. Use the 3.0.X version or use the most recent Beta version.
  11. Make sure the only map enabled on the Etrex 20 is the Canada Topo V4. The maps have a drawing order and if there is something draw on top of the map of interest then it is going to be obscured. As another poster suggested, use the recreation profile as it has settings that will tend to show more of the Topo features.
  12. Yes. The 4.0.X version of the Garmin plugin doesn't work on Macs. Mac users should use the 3.0.X version.
  13. There has been discussion that version 4.X of the Mac version of the communicator plugin has a bug that renders it useless. Most users have choosen to use version 3.X of the plugin with success. My recollection is that there is a beta version of 4.X that is useable with a Mac. If I had a Mac I would use 3.X. Hi Chuck4564, Thanks for your suggestion about going back to Garmin Communicator 3.X. As it turns out, I just updated from 3.X to 4.X and that's when I began having this problem, so I suspect that is the culprit. Editorial comment...how the hell can Garmin release software that is "useless"? Do they not have anyone who tests the software before it's released? There, I feel better now. One last question...I can't figure out how to get rid of 4.X and return to 3.X. I looked on the Garmin website but didn't see an option for that. And now their website is down for maintenance. Can you please tell me how to get back to 3.X. Thanks! In Firefox 12.0, Tools, Options, Manage Add-ons, Plug-ins, Disable Garmin Communicator Plugin 4.0....at least I think that is the way to do it. I haven't done it myself. I don't have a clue what the resolution path might be in Safari. Good luck.

  15. Yes. North is zero degrees. East is 90 degrees. South is 180 degrees. 43 degrees is NE. Most GPS receivers have the ability to project waypoints. That might be useful for this situation.

  17. There are reports that V4.0.?? of the communicator plugin doesn't work with macs so V3.0.1?? is the one of choice for mac users. I don't think webupdater will do much for your intent to upload maps. Using some version of MapSource or BaseCamp is the most common tool for uploading maps. Look through the changelogs to see which version(s) suits your needs.
  18. If the Garmin communicator plugin doesn't find your GPSr then try getting the latest update to the plugin from Garmin. To eliminate the USB cable as a failure point put the GPSr in mass storage mode (Setup, Interface, USB Mass Storage). If windows explorer can see the file system on the GPSr then the cable is good. Other possible culprits are anti-virus software, firewall, or browser security features. From GC.com, clicking on "Send to GPS" should cause a window to pop-up that has a Garmin tab, that has a "Write" button. Clicking on the "Write" button should produce a message that file GCXXXXXX.gpx was successfully written. An icon should show up on the map where the cache was located. I don't follow your statement "follow the address that's given for the plug in." The plugin should be installed on the computer. I have heard there is a bug in the mac version of the 4.0.1 plugin that renders it useless. If you are using a mac then install the 3.0.1 version of the plug-in. An archive of past issues of Garmin software/firmware is available at Garmin Utilities
  19. I found this web page with a couple maps: Alleganey State Park Maps
  20. This is a common question. From the cache listing, navigate to Geocache, select "map" if not already selected (not compass), then pick the flag near the upper right corner of the screen, enter the parameters of interest...race to the next location.
  21. The accuracy of the 2008 Topo mapset is hit and miss. Most data is good. It happens that the location where I live the roads on the map are displaced about a quarter mile to the north. The other features such as streams and lakes are appropriately located. One must verify before using the data.
  22. HAve you tried looking by country-Canada? there are like 5 results. try the third one by clicking HERE The Ibycus Topo 4.0 is a nice set of free maps. When I look at the map in MapSource there is a fair amount of road detail, and many lakes in Nova Scotia. I don't have any local knowledge to know whether it has minimal or good coverage of backroads as the OP desired. The Ibycus Topo 4.0 is a huge download at 4GB that presents some challenges. It can be difficult to chase down a download location. Download Ibycus Topo 4.0
  23. The waypoint limit for the 60CSx is 1000. There is virtually no limit on the number of items entered as POI. I have over 100000 on my unit. To get the number of waypoints stored on the 60CSx, download them to Mapsource. It will give you a count. One could then delete some or all of the waypoints on the 60CSx using the method another poster suggeted. If one deleted all the waypoints, one could then load some or all of them back to the 60CSx using MapSource.
  24. The 60CSx has a barometric altimeter and can also output GPS based altimeter readings. The barometric altimeter, as you have seen can get to be a bit inaccurate. The inaccuracy is a function of local atmospheric conditions, i.e. weather. To calibrate the barometric altimeter...setup, calibration, altimeter, Yes/No...If you know the correct elevation you can use that, if you want it to use GPS elevation you can use that. If you have the altimeter page as one of the ones being display you can use that as a starting point. From the Altimeter page, menu, calibrate altimeter, Yes/No...same as before. In my experience I haven't seen an particular usefulness of the barometric altimeter. The GPS based altitude has always been fine for my uses. One oddity that might be of interest is comparing the GPS and barometric values while flying in an airplane. When cruising at altitudes of 28kft to 40kft my barometric altimeter has read 6kft to 8kft. Garmin supposedly has some algorithm to automatically calibrate the barometric altimeter with GPS based data without user intervention. I haven't ever seen documentation on how they do that. To get output of the GPS based altitude...from the satellite page, menu, GPS elevation.
  25. Sure, using the geocaching app w/o data or wifi is possible. It takes some preparation though. You will need to save some data for offline use. The most straight forward way is to run a PQ and then download that, and save the applicable maps that you might need. Another approach is to save individual caches for offline use. Yet another approach would involved printouts of the cache listing you intend to visit. One could then navigate to the published coordinates using the compass app on the iphone, or an other app. Or, from any saved cache on the iphone geocaching app one can create an additional waypoint (enter the coordinates manually) and navigate to it using the compass pointer.
