  1. quote:Originally posted by canadazuuk:Straight off the guidelines in FAQ: "How long do caches exist? It all depends on the location of the cache and its impact on the environment and the surrounding areas. Caches could be permanent, or temporary." Sounds like you needed the cache posted as either an event cache, or need to advise the approver just what the intent is. Hope this helps. In the submission it was mentioned it would be for a geocaching seminar. THe best way to bring people into geocaching is to have other geocachers take them through a short course in which they may learn how to find a cache on thier own.THe entire course I set is about two miles long. One reason I wanted it posted was so that I could hand out printouts of the geocahing.com pages. I do have it listed on the Navicache.com site. Buy the way. I mentioned to the approver that I would keep the caches permanent.
  2. The problem I have with the system is this, I read the guidelines and posted two Temporary caches for a seminar. I was told by the powers that be that temporary caches are not allowed. They sent me a link to read re-guidelines. There was noting posted about this on the web site. It's one thing to have a cache refused because you did not follow a LISTED GUIDELINE. When you take the time to find a spot, put the cache together and then go back and place it, then submit the cache. THEN you have it Turned dowm because of some guideline that is not posted.Thats like getting a speeding ticket where there is no posted limit to read, how are you to know what is allowed if you are not given the opertunity to read the rules. What does it take to update what is the most important information "GuidelineS".
  3. If you want to post new cache, there are guildine that are not list. These are ones you find out about after you have hidden a cache and and then tried to post it. When you bring this to the ateention of those in charge the reply is that the guidlines url does not get updated as changes are made. To me if it is not listed, is not a guildline.
  4. I have used the garmin e-trex, e-trex legand, Magelan Sport trak, Sport trak Pro and Meridian Gold (My current GPS). I sell GPSr as part of my job and have been a GPS buyer for the company I work for, so I get to try them out. Maps in general-non of them are perfect. As far as roads In my area Magelan does a better job than Garmin, As far as topo, I have used Garmin and Magellan, The Magellan Topo software includes street names, the Garmin does not. THe Magellan has a terain profile feature, the Garmin does not. The Magellan will display cross streets you are approaching, the Garmin Does not. Both the Sport trak and Legend will fit into a shirt pocket. The Magellan does have a better antenna, lets face it these are radios, the antenna is the most important part of a radio.
  5. You should also keepin mind that even with WAAS, if you are getting 9 feet in acuracy, in which direction are you off, 9 feet cand be twenty feet. When I get within 20 feet of a cache, my GPS goes into my pocket, then it is time to look for the cache.
  6. With easter so close, try setting up an easter egg hunt with plastic easter eggs. This would be a multi cache. As some one finds and egg, they open it and find the coordinates for the next egg. Of course the last one would be the cache.
  7. Being that I sell both Magellan and Garmin, I have learned, if you need to call, call at 8am their time, you get through much faster. If you call later in the day, you are looking at needing to wait on hold. There are companies that are a lot worse to deal with. As far as E-mail, ,forget about it, use the phone!!!!!!
  8. I have been a big fan of the Nat. Geographic maps for quite a few years. Long before I got into geocaching. I use them for geocachong to study cache locations and also as storage for cache way points I may need in the future. I also use the Topo Sync software so that I can click onto a cache and bring all the iforamtion I have pasted for the Geocaching web site, this wat I do not need to log on again to pick a cache to search for. I also use map send topo to load maps onto my Meridian Gold.
  9. A freind of mine just got from visiting family in Russia. What he discovered is that in Russia you may only use a GPS that has an accuracy no better than 100 meters. This means most anything manufactured is not allowed. The GPSRs that are allowed for civillians only offer 100 meters.
  10. Why is it that some people feel a need to post spoilers when loging a cache? Could it be that they do not think before they post a find. I even had a photo posted of one of mine, I just deleted th persons find. Second question, Why is it that so many people into Geocahing do not understan GPS technology, I have seen quite a few post by cachers stating things like "The coordinate are off by at least twenty feet. Guess what, with some GPSR all you are going to get is 30 feet. Even with a GPS with WAAS all your aare going to get is 18-20 feet, Figure it out, was calims are 9 feet, that can be in any direction, that 18 feet. If you are using an older style GPS liek the E-texk Yellow and Camo you will not get WAAS. If you have WAAS disabled all you get is 30 feet.
  11. Try this out. A few day begore you go E-mail some one who has recently found some of the caches you are looking for, or the person/persons that hid them for food suggestions.
  12. While I do understand some one concern about there being to many caches. While I only statred geocaching about 2 months ago. I have been to one cache site in which the cache is not there anymore, but it is stilled listed, so my YL and I place a hew not to far from the site of the missing cache so people would not be disapointed in not finding the original cache.. I even had one of my caches vandelized and I had to relocate it. ANother one of mine has turned up missing twice, Both times after some one left money in it HMMMM. In the future if some one places money in this one, I am going to take it out.
  13. I would be nice if the section on the main page listng the lates 15 -. where expanded to more than 15. In a case like the past two days with no updates. Quite a few new Ca. caches never made that list. How many? maybe 50.
  14. It woulds be nice if the Geocahing web sight had a link to photos of poison etc. I tried to load a few on one of my cache pages to alert people to what it looked like but the photos would not load.
