  1. This is a little late - but we had the same problem with our Meridians on motorcycles with the RAM mount. Problem was solved by using power cord with cigarette lighter adapter. Only problem now is adding a cigarette lighter to all of our rides! Boots
  2. We're shopping for SD cards for our Meridian, we've seen the new 256 and 512 cards, but don't know if our software and/or receiver can utilize these cards. Obviously, we want to load as many detail maps as possible, but it would appear we are limited by software to the number and size of regions that can be downloaded. If this is true, then a larger card would not be of any use. What is the largest card anyone is using with the Meridian GPS, are you able to fill the card, does the receiver operate properly?
  3. I tried it again just a few minutes a go and I did the save to disk and it worked just fine. I think I tried that the last time... but it worked and I'm happy, thank you for your response. Boots, Bugs and I went out to day in the snow storm using four wheel drive for about half of a 117 mile trip and found four more caches. We just bought our first gpsr and couldn't wait to try it out. Hopefully nobody else was out in the snow behind us looking for the same caches because our tracks would of led them right to them and ruined the fun for them. We bought a sportrak. These things are amazing! I had done a lot of reading about the units and am planning on getting a gps v unless somthing better becomes available before I make my purchase. You always read a lot about how dificult it is to get a good sat lock under heavy cover... man am I happy with the sat lock on this unit. I intialized it on the back porch under a full roof and than took it inside the house and navigated my way around from room to room. Sat status was at full waas mode. Out in the snow storm we left it in our pocket in the truck under heavy cloud cover and never lost lock. I'm impressed! thanks, Bonzi
  4. When I try to download to easygps I get the screen that I check mark " open from location" and then I hit enter. Nothing else happens and I don't seem to get any download. Thanks for any ideas you may have that will help me. Bonzi
  5. thank you folks for the replies. I don't yet own any gpsr unit but am recearching them a lot to decide which one to buy. I have another post over on the getting started board that explains what I want to be able to do with the unit and the features that I would like to have. The gps-v is in the running for right now unless I can find somthing better for my intended purpose's. It would be nice to have a unit like the gps-v with a bigger screen and a memory big enough to hold a lot of maps and tracks. The way things are looking right now I may have to tote a laptop around on the bike with me on my longer trips. I have come across somthing called a data logger that you hook up to your unit for recording track and waypoint info but have'nt done much recearch into it yet. Money spent for it would make a good down payment on a laptop I'm sure. Thanks, Bonzi
  6. hey, you guys are great, thanks for all the info. I spent some time last night reading the manual for the gps-v and have a question. When using the map screen in a non navigational mode (not goto or autorouting)just for the purpse of having your position shown on the moving map does the lock on to roads feature work? I also didnt understand what use the manual routing would be. It would seem you spend the time to enter all the roads and turns for the route and than are only able to navigate the route with the compass screen. Is this correct or am I missing somthing? I also wondered about the track log setup,I see that one option is to have it save track points based on time, can you define the amount of time between track points? I know the unit has a very small amount of space set aside for storing track logs and was wondering if setting the interval to say like one hour if I might be able to create longer tracks that would show my motorcycle trips across the country, say to Alaska and back? What if I have the map zoomed out to see a larger area and am traveling on a road that is not normaly shown at that zoom level will it be shown any way because that is the road I'm on? OK, I'll shut up for now. You don't have to try to answer all these questions, any help at all will apreciated. Thanks for your time. Bonzi
  7. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I think if the gps-v had more memory I would have my unit picked out, as is though, Im still looking. Bonzi
  8. I was wondering how the gpsr's reference north. Do they only use true north? Can they be set to give bearings in magnetic north? If so do they caculate the declination for the area your in? I would think it awful handy for the unit to give bearings in magnetic north so that one could just follow the compass without any further thought of the declination. I have never noticed anything about this mentioned when I read about a unit. Thanks. Bonzi
  9. thanks for the reply. Do you have any idea how many hours or days of track points these units will hold before they start writing over the track at the beginning. From what I've read about most gps units they only hold so many trak points. If a person divide the number of track points my the update interval ( 1 sec.?) is that how long of a track that can be created? If this is the case it would seem like you would have to be saving your track somewhere else besides the unit on a pretty regular bascis. I was hoping there was a unit that could save many thousands of miles of tracks so I would have a record of my motorcycle trips without the need for a laptop. I do like the features of the gps-v a lot, looks like it would pull double duty as a unit for geocaching and for motor travel. I'm going to try and look up the toposync software you told me about now. Thanks for your time. Bonzi in Ohio
  10. hello everyone. I came across this sight during one of my recent and many searches of the web to gather info on gps units. I have been reading about geocaching here and think I will be adding that to my list of hobbies as it sounds like a lot of fun and will fit well with my love of hiking, motorcycling and land navigation by map and compass. I get the general feeling that about any of the gps units will work pretty good for geocaching so I will describe my original purpose and reason for wanting one with the hope that some of you will be able to guide my first purchase to one I won't regret. I want one to keep mounted on my motorcycle during all trips and weather conditions. I am reasonably sure that I would like a mapping unit even though I have read plenty that says the maps are not that accurate. I have mixed feelings about the ones with auto routeing and turn by turn directions. For use on the bike I would like a large screen if possiable. My biggest need I have is for the unit to be able to keep track of my route and waypoints while I'm driving and be able to transfer these to a map on the pc for accurate record keeping of the roads I drove on and the points of interest that I mark as waypoints. I think the biggest problem with this is going to be memory, I take very long trips a lot of the time. I am right now planning one from Ohio to Alaska and back. I have no plans right now to purchase or carry a laptop with me but am afraid this may be my only option. My goal of this endeaver is to be able to create maps on the pc that show the route that I took, the places I stopped, the pictures that I took and information about the stop. I have no idea what software I will need yet but I think the software is available to do this, I'm just not sure if there is a gps unit that will handle this or if there is a way to do it without a laptop. I hope some of you well informed people can give me some suggestions or ideas on what I need. Thanks for your time and any help you can offer. ps I don't get to log on on a regular bascis so don't think I'm ignoring someone if it takes me awhile to reply. thankyou Bonzi in Ohio
