  1. I just received a nuvi 500 this afternoon. I have been trying and researching as much as I can and still can not find out how to get the topo maps to come up. Someone suggested pushing the - on the Ready to Navigate screen but all that did was move the map out to the entire U.S. How do I get the topo maps to come up on my nuvi 500??? thanks Gary
  2. The only thing I see on the battery is the bar code and a DD48EE and then a bunch of numbers. I did find this thought but again pretty steep. http://www.tigergps.com/garminbattnuvi5pk.html Considering I just bought two Li-ion 3.7V 1450mAh batteries, a wall and cigerette lighter charger shipped for 11 bucks!
  3. Thanks guys I didn't think of the same battery being used in a camera but then again why not? Here is the problem. I'm kina a pitb when it comes to stuff. Some stuff I use hard but try to take care of it and get as many "miles" out of it as I can. I"m an ole guy but still ride a bit of dirt on the ole dual sport. With all the bouncin around I don't want to connect a power cord to the GPS for fear of it wearin. What I want to do is carry two batteries with me. (hot swap as you refered to it) On in the unit and one in my pocket to change out along the ride. Or if out for only a couple of hours have one charging at home ready when I get back. It's a Li-ion battery Rateing 3.7V 1800mAH 6.7Wh. thanks
  4. I am trying to find an external battery charger for my Garmin Nuvi 500. I want to be able to charge the battery out of the GPS. Does anyone know of a source for this device? thanks for the help
  5. I am not new to geocaching but have been away for a while. I am a premium member and am trying to run pocket queries for my home location. When I run the querie and click on where it says preview it shows the caches in my area. When it comes to my email and I download the querie to a file then click on the K to get ready to download to my gps the queries are from Florida. I have Pa. and my zipcode checked when I may the querie but don't know how to get them to show up on the GSAK list. I know I have something wrong but not a clue as to what it is. thanks
  6. Thanks yeah I've been doin this for a while and use both those programs and as you say they are great. I was tryin to go a bit lighter and get away with only one thing to take. I think I'll go back to the garmin and ole palm xe. It was worth a try though. I did go out later and tried again. I did find two out of the three but the third one may not be there, I'll have to check the comments. I think it will be fine for a spur of the moment thing but not as a real serious tool. thanks for the help
  7. I have a iPhone 3gs. This is my first try with the iPhone so not sure what to expect. I downlaoded the fe free app for the iPhone and went out. Could be a lot of factors but it was almost useless. It did get me to the general location but not close enough to be useful. Is this normal with the iPhone? Also will the ten dollar download be any better? It seems I can get only so close and the distance freezes. Next thing I know it's telling me it's about fifty feet the other way? Again is this normal got the iPhone? Thanks for the help
  8. Hey thanks guys for the help. I "think" I am pretty close here but I have a little problem. I have the older blue Legend with the serial port. Ok I am able to transfer my tracks to mapsource and from mapsource can pull up google earth. The problem is it really isn't very exacting as to the pict and the mapping on google. Of course it could be me doin something wrong. When I pull it up on Mapsource its really a very sparce map. It only shows my track and a few major roads without towns or really much detail at all. I would like to be able to see the roads I was on. The map I from mapsourse really isn't much help the way it is. I tried to transfer the info to mapquest but it tells me the file is in an unexpected format and will not transfoer the info.
  9. Hope you guys are still around.LOL I am able to transfer from my Legend to Mapsource. Now another question for ya. How can get more detail in the map? What I mean is Mapsource only puts in the major roads. How do I get it to put in the little local and back roads? I tried mapquest but it said the file I was trying to transfer was not in the expected format. How do I get it to a format it will accept? thanks
  10. I tried this before but am havein a bit of a problem. I have a Garmin Legend. I have some tracks saved that I would like to transfer to some kind of a mapping program. I have tried it on Maps and Streets and MapSource. Can someone take me though the steps to take a saved track on my Legend and send it to a mapping program so I can save it on the computer and print it out? The gps is about 98% full and I need to save the tracks and put more on. Right now it seems the Legend is not communicating with the computer. The computer doesn't know the Garmin is connected to it. I know it can recognize the Garmin because it downloads the info from GSAK. thanks for the help
  11. Thanks for the info and gettin back to me about mapping from my legend. For some reason I didn't get a notification in my email I just went back to see if anyone responded. I looked at the sight very quickly and will give it a try. I am trying to map some dirt and gravel roads I ride my Dual Sport motorcycle on. It would be great to be able to see these tracks on a map. thanks again for the help
  12. I have a Garmin Legend. I would like to be able to take a trip that I made and transfer the info to something like mapquest or the like. You know maybe to give to someone so they could follow the same route or to be able to follow the same route again. Can someone tell me how to transfer a trip I saved on the Legend to a mapping program so I can print it out? thanks for the help
  13. What I am trying to do is take the track I took while on a ride and transfer that info to some kind of a program that will put it on a map that I can give someone or keep myself for future reference. The info on the gps is almost usless unless I can put it to a map of somekind. My idea is like a "trip tick" you may get from AAA. Kind of an overlay or a line written on a map to show the route
  14. Did you download and install Garmin Training Center first? No where do I get that?? Ok found it and downloaded it now what
  15. Here in lies the problem. I have mapsource downloaded the problem is now I don't know how to install if it didn't come on my computer. This is the part I don't know how to do. "Change to the directory in which you downloaded the files, (i.e., c:\garmin), and run the executable file (.exe)." When I try to run the Mapsource it goes through an unzip then when I hit next it tells me no previous programs nave been found. I know that is what is supposed to say but I don't know how to do what it tells me to do.
  16. Ok I have mapsource and jzip downloaded. Is jzip the same as winrar? Anyway I don't know how to extract the files from mapsource? How do I get to the next step?
  17. Ok downloaded mapsourse. Now I know I have to extract the files using winrar. What I don't understand is how to do it. When I click on mapsourse it wants me to run the program. I don't know how to unpack or extract the contense of the program using winrar.
  18. Ok on my way out the door for about an hour or so. Didn't read the link but............ I went to google maps and went to gps then it said download from gps. Didn't do anything yet but am I onto something? Of course I will read the link when I get back though
  19. Hold on now. LOL When I said I saved the trip I ment on the the Legend gps. I have the thing saved and the map on the gps itself. I didn't do anything else. Don't give me to much credit. LOL I have the cables since I can download all the caches I want at one time. But I never did this. I ride dual sport motorcycles and took a trip on Sunday that I would like to be able to do again. I used the gps to track my trip and saved it to the tracks file on the gps. That's where I am now. Oh I have the ole Blue Legend I have Google earth on the computer already. I just went to google earth and updated my google earth to the 2009 version. Sounds like I have the basics just the particulars are the problem now. LOL First I don't know how to get the route I saved from the Legend to the computer.
  20. Thanks guys. To tell the truth I don't know if I have the knoledge to do that. I saved the track anyway. What I would like to do is to be able to take the track and put it on a maping program somehow that will show the dirt roads I was on. Sorry for not getting back till now. I checked the box where it said let me know if there were any responses but I neve got a message. I just thought I would check anyway and say your responces. If there is anyone that is willing to take me step by step I sure would like to try it. thanks guys
  21. Just wondering. I have a Garmin Legend. I took a off road ride yesterday and was wondering if I can transfer that info from my Legend to a mapping program like Streets and Trips or the like. If so how do you do it. thanks
  22. I just started haveing this problem. It has worked fine in the past. I am using GSAK and CMconvert. I have downloaded 100 caches from this site. I then load them into GSAK and it shows 100 caches loaded. This is all the normal stuff and it works fine till now. When I then take the zipped file from the original download and try to convert them using the CMconvert it will only load 31 files. I can't load the 100 only 31. Why can't I load all the files? In the past I have been able to load all of them. thanks for the help
  23. I know I did this before the computer crashed but how do you get the caches on gsak to show up on geoearth sat map? Or how do you get your downloaded caches to show up on geoearth? Thanks for the help...... Gary
  24. Got it all guys thanks. He sent me the numbers I found where I had to go to enter them into the Palm and the darn thing works. I'm up and runnin again. See I thought the cachemate would put the program on the Palm when it hotsynced. I didn't remember I had to load the cachemate program on the palm first then download the info. Sure glad these forums are around. I thought I was gonna have to buy another Garmin a couple of weeks ago. It would just shut off for no reason at all. Through the forums I found it needed an upgraded download for the new sats. Ain't it great!!! thanks again for all the help Gary
  25. BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats it thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long story sure glad its working. When we travel I do quite a bit of geocaching. Just glad I can still do it. Now one more poblem that should be pretty easy to fix. I bought the program a year or so ago. I could download as many caches as I wanted onto the palm at one time. Apparently this program I have when I redownloaded isn't registered. Is there a way to get the registered program that I bought? thanks again guys I appreciate it.
