  1. Some lesser known features of the Alberta Wild Rose Geocoin There are actually 42 mosquitoes on the geocoin celebrating a very early series of Alberta geocaches hidden in Edmonton called the "Building 42" caches. There are nineteen stamens on the rose representing Alberta's 19 electoral regions, Electoral Area #1 is Medicine Hat/Cypress County. The names of various cities, hamlets, towns and villages were added to the coin and most were selected because an early Alberta geocacher had set a cache there or lived there. The cities are arranged generally from N to S and W to E. One glaring exception to this arrangement and a purposeful one is the placement of Sexsmith, Alberta in a very visible portion of the coin because well... sex sells. The placement of Sexsmith is the reason the Wild Rose is also called the Adult geocoin. For Alberta geocachers names like East Coulee and O'Brien may be familiar, they are the home towns or early placement locations of very well known Alberta geocachers. There weren't many features of this geocoin that were random, it was design choices all the way.
  2. You too Nikos!!! If you want one of these Brass Cap Geocoins then you are going to have to order one or wait until they show up in a cointest. That is going to happen for sure and I know you will be providing the answers no matter how tough I make the question. This newest geocoin really turned out well, it is great when a geocoin turns out so well. You never know if the choices you made are correct until you see the final product. My friends at The Geocoin Store offered their expertise and I listened and I think that is one reason why the geocoin turned out so well. They took my ideas and translated that into geocoinage.
  3. You wouldn't happen to be 35 years old would you? 1975 was a great year, I was just finishing high school, there were no personal computers but you could get Heathkits. I didn't know what I was going to do for living but I would be out in the patch pretty soon after dropping out of school. I wouldn't find a career in computers for another 10 years or so, I got into the industry right around the time that the 386 was debuting and computers powered by these expensive powerful processors were $5000.00. Machrone's Law stated that the computer you wanted always cost $5000.00, it didn't have the endurance of Moore's Law but it was very true for many years. We had to make sure to go to the bank on Friday afternoon to ensure we had money for the weekend. Bank lineups were really bad on Fridays. I will try and get the button up for Australia and other International ports of call up today gardengorilla. I shipped two Earth turtles to Greece, the basic cost was $4.00 but Registered bumped it up to $16.95.
  4. What Canadian geocacher has placed a geocache in England that currently has 70+ watchers and is closing in on 5,000 Finds?
  5. You folks in England are so lucky!!!! You have a moving virtual cache called "Ye Olde Survey Monument" which was hidden by Canadian geocacher outforthehunt. Our version in Alberta is called the Brass Cap Cache and they are the same, moving virtual caches. In the UK the YOSM cache has it's own statistics page, just like our Brass Cap Cache. This is not the same as a US benchmark in that it is a geocache and you are only allowed to log points which have been incorporated in the YOSM cache, most benchmarks are not included. Here in Alberta cachers go out together to find some of the more challenging caps as they can be on mountains. That link leads to my latest Brass Cap Adventure where I actually climbed a mountain and didn't find the cap! I have recently created a new geocoin for the Brass Cap Cache and this geocoin coincides with our first Brass Cap Convention Event cache next weekend. outforthehunt created a number of moving caches in Alberta and in other locations around the world. We still have a moving multi (Leap Frog) a moving Traditional (Stash and Dash) and a moving Virtual (The Brass Cap). So you can log some UK survey monuments, the ones listed in the YOSM Cache page can all be logged and in addition they will all accrue to your find count. If you have a unique BM like the one attached to your house then a request to ofth can sometimes persuade him to list it as part of the YOSM cache.
  6. I have placed a thread in the Geocoin Forum for the new Brass Cap Geocoin. I have added PayPal links for customers in the continental US to the Event geocoin webpage. Your purchase of a Brass Cap Geocoin will directly support The Brass Cap Convention event in our community and future events in our province. Thank You
  7. I forgot to add an image of the new Brass Cap Geocoin in the opening post. Fixed that. Added a US PayPal button to the Brass Cap Convention geocoin webpage. Your purchase of a Brass Cap Geocoin will directly support geocaching events in our community and province. Thank You
  8. This will be the third geocoin I have created (with help, salutes to you all) that has had the AB tracking prefix. Each geocoin I have made has had a custom icon and has been trackable. The Brass Cap Geocoin is a trackable geocoin with a custom icon created by Alberta artist and geocacher peanutbutterbreadandjam, that celebrates an iconic Alberta geocache, a moving virtual cache offering over 450 different targets for searchers, the Brass Cap Cache . Some background The first geocoin project I ever did was the Orange Dinosaur. The Orange Dinosaur was made very early on and celebrated The Gas City - Medicine Hat, Alberta. The lamp post icon was handrawn before I ever saw a skirtlifter, that gas lamp is a theme of our city. The Orange Dinosaur was a personal coin with a PC prefix. The Orange Dinosaur was followed by the 2006 Alberta Wild Rose, artist peanutbutterbreadandjam, minted by my friends at The Geocoinstore. The Alberta Wild Rose was a committee coin and we did a great job, I love that geocoin. It was the first geocoin made with the AB tracking code. If you know anyone involved in the project you can ask them question like "How many mosquitoes are on that geocoin?" "Why is it also called the Adult Geocoin?". The next project I undertook was the Purple Dinosaur The Albertosaurus Geocoin. This geocoin celebrates the unique nature of geocaching in Medicine Hat, we have some of the oldest geocaches in Alberta because geocaching played a role in early college geography programs. peanutbutterbreadandjam was the artist for the Albertosaurus geocoin and it was the second geocoin I made that had the AB prefix. The Brass Cap Geocoin started off, as every geocoin that I have made has, as a labour born out of love. I didn't dwell too much on this geocoin because there wasn't much I had to do, the material only needed selection and arrangement, the work of creation is an ongoing process with the cache owner. With Brian's (outforthehunt) permission I selected the two elements that make this geocoin. The unnamed artist who did the translation of these elements into geocoinage artwork selected the palette of colours. The experts at The Geocoinstore suggested finishes and other design elements. Thank You All. This geocoin has turned out more than well. I am so very happy with every choice made and the resulting geocoin is one of the nicest geocoins I have ever seen or handled. It is certainly hands down the nicest geocoin I have ever made and it yells Alberta with every feature. If you are an Alberta geocacher and brass capper then you are going to want this geocoin. I am especially pleased with the Artist Version of this geocoin. The subtle differences between the Attendee Version and the Artist Version are perfect, thanks Pete. The Artist Version of this geocoin has been made in a very small number and none are being retained. There will be around a dozen sets of the Brass Cap Geocoins available at the SAW I Weekend. Each set of Brass Cap Geocoins will contain a copy of the Artist Version, the Thank You Version, the Attendee Version and the Retail Version. The remaining Artist Version geocoins will be presented to outforthehunt so the only way to get an Artist Version of this geocoin is to attend or to hope at some future point that outforthehunt might give you one. This geocoin turned out so very well. Can you tell that the geocoins arrived today? I will add a link for American and International buyers to the Brass Cap Convention geocoin webpage tomorrow. I will not be posting any pictures of the new Brass Cap geocoins until the debut of the geocoin is complete at the SAW I- Welcome to Medicine Hat Event Cache on Friday August 20th, 2010. No Brass Cap Geocoins will ship until the 18th of August.
  9. No need to worry my friend. I made the decision to do that before I even saw the cost. If these earth Turtles are lost in the mail then you will get $100.00CDN. That is not enough to replace these two geocoins, I doubt you could find one of the old earth Turtles. I hope that the tracking will get them into your hands where they will be appreciated. Congratulations again, the Cointest was very tough, there were only a few people who made it to Stage Three. The last time I checked the tracking code it said the package was in the Medicine Hat post office but that isn't right. It should update soon and show it in Calgary or Toronto. I want to publicly say thank you again to the geocacher who donated the new Earth Turtle. I hope you see this note. I will post some pics of my renovation (still ongoing) so you can see where the geocoin spent the last year or so. It was buried. Our basement stairs needed to be replaced and that is a big job. The floor had to be jackhammered out to replace the old cast iron plumbing. The old chimney had to be removed from the top down using a sledgehammer. The old furnace had to be broken up with a sledge and hauled out. It really was major project. At the end of the day we have a new bathroom, what could be better for family of five?
  10. Brass Cap Convention Update van der Decken has agreed to be the walkabout leader on our discovery tour! There will be several new Brass Caps that we will see on that walkabout. I hope the weather doesn't interfere Attendees to the Brass Cap Convention will be able to view the displays at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Museum. I will provide further details later but you will be able to see these intriguing and beautiful displays sponsored by the Alberta Land Surveyor's Association to celebrate their hundredth anniversary for no charge as a participant in this event. ATTN: The last day to pre-register will be Tuesday, August 17th by 6:00AM (That is 6:00 on Tuesday morning.) The tee-shirts will be olive green and the text will be yellow/gold. Please remember to fill in your shirt size and geocaching name. The Medicine Hat CARMH Event hosted by King.Tut will be the source of many new caches. The theme is Cache and Relax this year. The Brass Cap Convention has sponsored the first thirty CARMH caches with coupons for $2 Tim cards(one per team or cacher please) they are a coupon that can be redeemed during the entire SAW I Event with any event host - so being FTF (Fun to Find ) on any CAR cache will get you a cuppa at Timmie's. The people who find the most CAR caches will get the most votes when it comes time to award prizes. I want to offer a special thank you to the City of Medicine Hat. They have donated a slew of collapsible zip together shopping bags in lime green and black. These high strength bags are marked with the Eco-smart logo and our own attractive city logo. I will include these with registrations as long as they last. They also donated some cool flashlights and some mugs for the prize table , a special thank you to Jobok &Deedster for getting the inside scoop on these cool additions. I do hope to obtain permission to list this event earlier next year and I am sorry if I didn't give you enough notice to arrange to attend, I know we are a long way away from the major centers but the launch of this event and the planning of an event like this requires a lot of help and it has to be local. I want to thank everyone who is helping out.
  11. In the mail yesterday 67860 48331 85100 I have sent the two earth Turtles by registered mail at 4 X the usual cost . I have had packages go missing before and most often I can replace them. Two earth turtles are not replaceable. The registered letter is insured automatically for $100.00CDN. I will send the tracking code to the Gatoulis so he can see where the package is. If you have won a Brass Cap Geocoin they will not ship unhjtil the 18th of August. This will ensure that the geocoins debut is at the SAW I - Welcome to Medicine Hat Thanks
  12. A Convention Update There will four (4) outforthehunt walking sticks available to attendees at the Brass Cap Convention as prizes. If you are an Alberta geocacher then this is a must do event because the opportunity to win an ofth walking stick doesn't come along very often. If you are a Saskatchewan or BC geocacher then you might want to consider a trip to Medicine Hat, AB for the SAW I weekend. There will be a total of five different events that make up SAW I. Friday night "flash mob" event - Tiny Bubbles - designed hosted by navypeople Friday night get together - SAW I - Welcome to Medicine Hat - designed and hosted by Jobok&Deedster Saturday all day long - The Brass Cap Convention - desgined and hosted by wavector Saturday night- Medicine Hat CARMH Event - designed and hosted by King.Tut Sunday - 10000, 100, 10, 1 CITO Event - designed and hosted by Medicine Hat Interpretive Program The Medicine Hat CARMH Event starts on Friday and runs all night and all day Saturday, you will have lots to do If you want to own an outforthehunt walking stick, attend!!!! Here is the link for the Event Pre-registration page, you must pre-register to obtain a t-shirt and special Attendee Geocoin. Pre-registration is $22.00CDN See you there wavector I will post some pics of the t-shirt design later, I think it is very nice (I designed it!)
  13. I am adding an Alan and Elli Jeep, donated by the geocacher Chrysalides. Thank you so much for your gracious act. Chrysalides told me that they needed no encouragement to participate and I should use the prize they won to give to another geocacher. So now we have two geocoins on the table, an Albertosaurus and Alan and Elli Jeep. These Alan and Elli Jeeps are very desirable geocoins, thanks so much Chrysalides. This is really good news if you have posted a picture of your geocaching bag, a chance to win another very desirable geocoin!
  14. POST A PICTURE OF YOUR GEOCACHING BAG AND YOU COULD WIN A GEOCOIN! It is that simple. I have given away a lot of geocoins so far. I sent out every geocoin that was won then stopped drawing for awhile, I have explained why I stopped drawing. I know that people don't like it when they are told they have won a geocoin and then no geocoin, that has happened to me. I won a contest setup by Fizzy Magic operating as Venona, he said I won, took my address then no geocoin. I wrote Fizzy Magic several times but no geocoin. I definitely did not do that, if I said you won a geocoin I shipped a geocoin so people were waiting to hear who won the next geocoin, not waiting to get a prizze they were to0ld they had won. I have wrapped up all the other contest threads and have given away another 6 geocoins including a 2006 Utah, a 2007 Albertosaurus, an Alan and Elli Jeep and two Earth Turtles. The Earth Turtles are made by Montana artist and geocoin designer extraordinaire, tsunrisebey. I had one and was given another to give away so Gatoulis won a pair of desirable and rare Earth Turtles. So after all is said and done, no one was promised a geocoin then not given one. This cointest thread is now open again and I wll be giving away more geocoin prizes. All the geocoins will be trackable and have a custom icon. You cannot win a geocoin after it's picture appears in this thread unless you have already entered. If you have seen the geocoins I have given away then you know you want to be an entrant before the next geocoin pic is posted. POST A PICTURE OF YOUR GEOCACHING BAG AND YOU COULD WIN A GEOCOIN!
  15. More giveaways griffinox has won a beautiful Albertosaurus geocoin. This is an "in addition to prize" so there is still another Albertosaurus geocoin to be won. That is right, I will be keeping everyone's name in the hat (margarine tin actually) and will draw for another geocoin soon. I will be adding more geocoins as well because I have just made a new one and will be giving some away for sure. POST A PICTURE OF YOUR GEOCACHING BAG AND YOU COULD WIN A GEOCOIN!
  16. More giveaways Chrysalides has won a beautiful Alan and Elli Jeep Geocoin.
  17. OK Some giveaways LadyBee4T has won a beautiful Utah 2006 Geocoin.
  18. Hi Eartha Thank You The winner is GATOULIS, who is currently holding Dead Fred as well. Congratulations Gatoulis. I found your post in the My Geocaching Bag thread, you have correctly answered all the Stage 3 questions. I made a draw using slips of paper and a margarine tin. All the names of the Stage Three entrants are pretty easy to find, just look at Dead Fred and they are the last four finders who grabbed Fred. Thanks to BexyBear who originally made this whole puzzle series possible. It was a lot of fun and I gave away a lot of coins. The other three Stage Three entrants will each receive a Brass Cap Geocoin (this is a new geocoin which will debut in 3 weeks. I will notify you on this thread when you the geocoins are shipped, expect to wait a few weeks. Gatoulis, I will be shipping your two Earth Turtles registered mail so there is no chance of losing them! I will send some follow up emails to all the entrants tomorrow morning. I am going to make a few more draws right now. Now to the prize that Gatoulis has won...two earth turtles.
  19. Congratulations to snowball58 You are the proud owner of a new February 2007 Geocoin Club Geocoin and an original GCC pathtag. I will send you an email asking for your snail mail. Thanks for being so patient. I didn't promise anyone a coin then not mail it, I just left these contests open for so long the coins are even rarer. Now that it is closed you will get your geocoin and pathtag quickly. I think you know this, you are a previous winner and a very smart geocacher for figuring out who the hampster cacher was. I had to do a bit of a reread to make sure I had it all right. Elves indeed. It just goes to show you that the logical threads that exist in the database are very real.
  20. Thanks to everyone who entered the contests. I want to say first that no one was actually left hanging in any of my unclosed contests, all the prizes that were rewarded were sent out, I gave away about 25 geocoins before things got screwed up here at my house. There are still another more prizes to give away. A little explanation might be in order. We have just completed a renovation which gave us a new bathroom in the basement. It disrupted life in our house and left me wondering what happened to my geocoins. I mananged to find most of them easily but could not find the most important coin that had been mailed to me during the contest, I stuck it away and couldn't find it again, I actually couldn't find anything again and felt lucky to find the LnL that had most of my geocoins. I finally found everything. I want to apologize to everyone for leaving the contests open for so long. I figured I would find the geocoin eventually and couldn't really close the contests until I found the prizes. The entries dropped off but everyone who had won a prize at that point had received it so other than a bit of nail biting for the people who had entered there was no problem that wouldn't eventually get worked out, and it has. I have learned my lesson and will keep the next contest short and simple. I have the other contests threads to finish up as well as there will be prizes in those threads as well. I should have everything done by tonight. (Famous last words!!!) So that is where we stand right now. Still on the table to give away A 2006 Utah A Alan and Elli Jeep A February 2007 GCC Club. Albertosaurus geocoins (a few) 2 tsun Earth Turtles being awarded in the "Nice spot here for a bit of butty munching." That is right, two, on old one and one from last year. I may add a few more here, depends. Thanks for the patience and sorry for the wait, free stuff is worth waitting for I hope.
  21. Thanks to everyone who posted pictures in this thread. I want to say first that no one was actually left hanging in any of my unclosed contests, all the prizes that were rewarded were sent out, I gave away about 25 geocoins before things got screwed up here at my house. There are still more prizes to give away and I will be contacting/announcing winners very soon. A little explanation might be in order. We have just completed a renovation which gave us a new bathroom in the basement. It disrupted life in our house and left me wondering what happened to my geocoins. Watch for that pretty soon. -------------------- wave: a shape or outline having successive curves vector: a quantity that has magnitude and direction and that is commonly represented by a directed line segment ------------------------------------------------------------ Every find on my list is a unique find and every find was actually found. I found all my finds and logged every find that I claim to have found, I have found one cache 77 times so far.
  22. Thanks to everyone who played all the puzzles in "Nice spot here for a bit of butty munching." I want to say first that no one was actually left hanging, all the prizes that were rewarded were sent out, I gave away about 25 geocoins before things got screwed up here at my house.. There are still another 5 or 6 geocoins to give away and the people who completed this puzzle to Stage Three are a very small group, everyone will get a prize. The winner of the Stage 3 of this contest is going to get a chance to win a pair of Earth Turtles, I will make the draws later today. A little explanation might be in order. We have just completed a renovation which gave us a new bathroom in the basement. It disrupted life in our house and left me wondering what happened to my geocoins. I finally found the fabulous geocoin I had misplaced and posted a picture of it yesterday on Photobucket. Here is the image That Earth Turtle will be paired with the already posted Earth Turtle to give the winner of Stage 3 a really really nice prize. I have entries from Stage 3 for a number of players and everyone who made it through Stage Three will get some type of geocoin reward.
  23. The Brass Cap Convention - Medicine Hat, Alberta I hope everyone in ALberta has time to come and visit Medicine Hat on August 20, 21 and 22. We are planning a weekend of fun and all of the local geocachers are pitching in with a variety of events, caches and activities surrounding the Brass Cap Convention, collectively these events and activities are going to be callled SAW I, that stands for Southern Alberta Weekend I. If you look in the Alberta cache listings you will see a CARMH (Cache And Relax Medicine Hat Event) that will take place on the same day as the Brass Cap Convention. The CARMH wrap up occurs a couple of hours after the Brass Cap Convention so evnts will not collide, you might have trouble doing everything though! We are planning other events that will span the entire weekend and offer a variety of geocaching related fun for everyone. If you are a survey buff and a Brass Capper then this is a day to celebrate. The Brass Cap is nearing 10,000 finds! The Alberta Land Surveyors celebrate 100 Years! The t-shirt will have a sleeve logo from the designer but otherwise will not include any sponsor logos or artwork, just the designs we selected for the front and the back. The artwork for the geocoin doesn't show the great features like the custom icon designed by Calgary Area Cacher and artist peanutbutterbreadandjam, the domed 3D side of the geocoin, the AB prefix in the tracking code and the beautiful earthtone palette. All the money earned from the sale of the geocoin, both the pre-registration and the retail versions, go directly to funding these events, no profit is ever taken. Any funds earned go directly back into the community in the form of geocoin giveaways and prizes. Your support makes these types of events possible and I can tell you it is appreciated very much. I can accomodate any special orders by sending a personlized PayPal invoice so if you want extra shirts or extra geocoins feel free to contact me directly using my profile on geocaching.com. If you live elsewhere in Canada and you want to help support our event and get a beautiful geocoin then there is a link to buy the Antique silver version of the geocin on the event website that includes shipping.
