  1. Here's one that I use as it uses Google MAPs and lets you create a route anywhere and not just by the shortest route as in Google Earth. It does take some working out but once you get the hang of it, it lets you have more opptions.

You CAN use Google Maps to do the routes. A member of our local caching group was kind enough to post the following instructions:

There is a trick you can use to automate this, but it's a little clumsy.

The interesting part is that Google MAPS (not Google Earth) will let you modify the route interactively. If you generate directions in maps.google.com , you can then left-click anywhere on the route and drag that point somewhere else to modify the route. For example, just drag your Torreya route off of I-10 and onto Blountstown highway!

The clumsy part is exporting the modified route as a KML file from Google MAPS. If you look at the top right of the map, you'll see a link called [Link to this Page]. The trick is

    • Left-click on [Link to this Page]
    • copy the text with the URL in the first field (called "Paste link in email or IM) with "Cntl-C"
    • paste that text somewhere (probably in a new browser window)
    • add the following to the end of the text: &output=kml
    • open a link to that new URL (with the &output=kml at the end of the address) and you should get options about either opening it with Google Earth, or saving it on your computer. From there, proceed to use the KML file of the modified route in the usual way to make a "Caches on a Route" query.

Here's an example of a modified URL ending in &output=kml See what it does in your browser.

The last bulleted step will be a little different on every computer, depending on the browser, the way you handle KML files, etc. But the point is that you can (1) modify the route in Google Maps and then (2) use the &output=kml trick to export the modified directions.

    I hope this makes sense...

  2. The maps show up but you can not click on the red tack and the line of nunbers that had been below the map are no longer showing up for those people that use that feature.

I got ride of the numbers. If you notice now, there are + and - icons on the top right of the map. Clicking those will now zoom in and out. Also there is an [i] on the right side of the map. That's got a cool feature too :D

    Actually, it's not that hard.

Right next to the map is a link. That link says "Geocaching.com Google Map".

This link has always been there. It takes you to the same exact spot that clicking on the map used to do.

The map that is there on the Cache Details page has never been draggable.

Ok problem from Down under. Geocaching.com Google Map link when you click on it it opens google maps and shows you that cache location and no matter what zone level it does not show up any other caches now.

To see other caches nearby you have to use the ...all nearby caches then use the map it square top left corner to other caches nearby on google maps.

Thought this should be add here.

  3. Same here, when I click the map at the top right of a cache page, the usual Flash viewer start but it keeps showing the animated round...

    Both IE and FF.

Just the round and round animated here to.

  5. Enjoying the new changes to the google map on the cache page. + - works well.

Make this page print-friendly (no logs) still brings up a grey square instead of a map.

  6. Hi Smish25,

Some events have decided on a channel to use during the event, but as for a single channel that we all use that can change from area to area depending on what repeater stations are avalible.

The other place to try asking this question is on the GCA forums, as you will find most Australian caches hang out there.

try posting your message on these forums- http://forum.geocaching.com.au/index.php You will need to registor and log in unless you post in the International Section.

  7. I was not aware that there is a term for this. What is the definition of "hydrogithics?" I thought "hydro" related to water.

    I think he means hieroglyphs.

Thanks for the correction of spelling.

GCVQ4A just adding one found today.

    edit to add GC above.

  8. My wife caches with me some of the time but does not wish to open her own account as we already have one. So there are some caches which I have hidden without her and she has enjoyed the chance to find those special places I have chosen hide some caches.

This therefore shows up as us finding our own caches.

  9. We are paying about $1.65 per liter unleaded

and about $1.85 per liter Diesel

i think our unleaded is not less then 92% octane.

    Ok 1 lt = 0.26 gallons

    1 gallon = 3.78 lts

    4lt = 1 gallon

Therefore we pay about $6.80 per gallon plus or minus currency converter.

    6.80 AUD = 6.5572 1 AUD = 0.9643

So we only pay $6.50 per gallon unleaded

    and about $7.40 diesel.

    You guys get it cheap.

Can anyone put some in the mail for me?

  10.

You start looking for a cache just because this is a great spot

and there may be one hidden here.

Hahahahahaha! I about fell over laughing when I read this...

Been there, done that... multiple times, with no GPSr or anything... :-)

Never found one this way though.... yet...

Yep just recently found a cache while out hunting for another.

  11. Hate to drag this up again.

New maps on cache pages age great but noticed this problem this evening, where you adjust the map zoom level at the bottem of the cache page and you get a white screen. It has all the google and rights info plus the red teardrop but no map. When you goto zoom 7 or 4 you get a map but nothing in 1,2,3,5 or 6.

Top map OK. Does not affect all pages. Try GCC44 GCNX27 GCGVNB

  12. Yep and got owners permision to log it as it is a complex mutli.

    icon_smile.gif May 5 by <>JABs (870 found)

This cache is Logged with the owners permission.

All started at about 4.30 am on a cold and frosty Canberra morning, we had been caching since 6.30 pm and the mind was now starting to play tricks, we had walk up numurous hills and over many frosty grass fields to finally stop in this urburn street to hunt for a near by cache Roger, the Cabin Boy.

As we neared the cache I looked down and spied the spot where I would hide a cache (there it was) and started to open said cache only for Code1 to call back to me what are you doing we still have about 100 meters to go.

Any way we signed log and decided to travel the 100m and guess what it was here we found the true cache and relised that against the odds we had not only found a cache on the side of a hill we had done it in the dark.

So we returned to that location to collect some info like who had found it and when so we where able to track down the the cache ID and owner.

Thanks for the greatest adventure of finding a cache without any previous cache info.

    JABs.

  13. Who is responsible for disable caches?

There seems to be alot of disable caches out our way that some have been for for several months now.

All with will replace soon or words of will fix.(some are in a bad case of needing repair).

How long should they be aloud to sit there and not be fixed, repaired, replaced?

Look at GC10ZYP and at a 10 km radius from that cache is there is no less then 8 disabled caches.

Without going through all 80 odd caches within that radius I count several that are in need of maintenance.

Yes I do understand that our reviewers are busy people that have a life outside of caching.

Is there any way that these caches can be reviewed or added to a review list say 6 weeks after been disabled and or needs maintenance is activated?

  14. Ok what is GW6 ?

It would be nice that when the site goes missing that one of the crew would post a note here so that we knew that they are aware of the problem.

Only takes a mintue to post a note.
