  1. Hey thanx for the link that's a great deal on the 500. I just bookmarked it. Wish I could afford one but I'm laid off at the moment but should be back to work in a few weeks (I Hope). Ray
  2. That's a good idea. I'm an electrician and have lots of things I could leave in a cache for a handyman. Thanx for the idea! Ray
  3. Finding the cache...... "PRICELESS"!! Sorry I just HAD to add that Ray
  4. Welcome to geocaching! In all reality while it may be nice to have a fancy high end gps it's really not necessary. I use an eXplorist 200 which also must have coords loaded by hand but it's not hard to do. In fact my 14 yr. old son usually loads them while I drive. What does matter is that you cache and your gps from what I've read here does a good job just as mine does. In a sense hand loading makes you more knowledgable about your gps so you don't need to depend on a PC to use it. Mainly have a good time and get out there! Ray
  5. My friends and I have geocached while on a motorcycle trip to Vt. . That was the 1st exposure I had to geocaching. One year later and now I'm doing it but so far only via pickup truck to a parking location. Don't let the snow stop you unless it's real deep. Good luck in your travels! Ray
  6. Your gps screens are really nice looking and easy to read! Someday I hope to get one. Ray
  7. Wow very cool place to visit! Enjoyed seeing all the pictures. Unfortunately I live 1655.5 miles from the gold mine! I would enjoy seeing such cool history left as-is.. Surprised it isn't preserved as a national historic park. Hope to someday see more of our great country. Ray
  8. Served in the Navy onboard USS John F. Kennedy carrier 75-78 as an electricians mate and drilling reserves from 78-80. Ray
  9. I've sat here digesting all these insults made to "non-members" for quite some time. When Jeremy started this site he stated it will always be free and that he appreciates people helping out by paying. I do not recall him insulting people by calling them moochers or free-loaders. I am currently laid off and have a gps that does not have pc connection capabilities so at the moment I can't afford to pay nor does it make sense to pay but I probably will down the road. Please do not insult people by generalizing that everyone is looking for a free ride! If anything I feel you are causing more harm than good by making these off color remarks to people you do not even know. Just because you pay doesn't make you better than me ! I have never complained because there are MOC's or can't get gpx files. There are many on the internet that believe in a free internet. That's the basis of Linux and it survives to this day. I have used the net since it was text based so I've been around a while. I also have contributed in non-monetary ways to help others. Value can't always be measured in dollars and cents (the moderaters are doing more than their share) so the next time you're on your high horse get down before you judge others. Sorry to single you out but you had the last insulting post. Ray
  10. When I buy a new... uh.. computer it will be a Mac. No more Windows crap! Vista... three-dimensional windows (who the heck needs those ) Just launched and people started discovering bugs in it! Good luck getting gps software working on a Mac. Trust me there isn't a bug-free OS on earth. Linux probably has the best record in squashing bugs and it's free. I have used most OS's and always go back to Windoze because everything I like works there. Ray
  11. Twelve feet is pretty good if you ask me! I don't expect the gps to get me directly onto the cache. Relax I think you did everything right. Ray
  12. That's pretty interesting was that the 1st gps you bought or did you build one for yourself? While I feel you meant to be funny please put yourself in another persons shoes before you make a comment like that. Ray
  13. I just got a gps compass and it has a declination scale on it to adjust it to true north based on location. From the literature that comes with it I think they said most maps are drawn using true north. Here is the link to the compass I got: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,98634_...se-Compass.html . I plan on learning how to navigate with it as a back up. When you think about the early explorers it's amazing what they accomplished using so little.. Ray
  14. First thing is welcome aboard! Second stop being so hard on yourself a moron doesn't ask questions. I suggest you talk to your good friend who geocaches and ask his/her opinion. For under $100.00 you can an inexpensive gps that will do the job for you and your friend can probably help you as well. Maybe it's a good idea to get something like your friend has so he can teach you. You can also learn alot reading this forum. Chances are someone has asked every question you may have and it's already answered. Be sure to read the FAQ's as they are helpful. If you have questions there is always someone here willing to help. I knew very little when I started here and I have learned more than you can imagine so ask away. Good Luck, Ray
  15. Hey that's a cool lil gps for 50 clams! Unfortunately there are no Aldi's up this way. How does it work for geocaching? Is Aldi's a discount food store(that's all the info I could find online)? Ray works as well as most other GPSr units for geocaching. though without the cable it takes time to get the caches loaded in. I got one as a second unit. yes, that is the Aldi's being discussed. They have a limited number of non-grocery items that they also sell at some stores. At that price you have a winner! Best deal I could find is about $85.00.. Ray

  17. WGS84 is the standard used here I wonder if you have the lats and longs entered in reverse? Also make sure you have it set up correctly for North, West etc. Ray
  18. Wonder if Wine can do what you need? I suggest you try a liveCD from this site: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.p...mp;sort=Purpose which has Wine and see if it will work. This way you don't mess up your PC. Ray
  19. Saw this deal and passing it along: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=...amp;dcaid=17654 Ray
  20. Interesting! What is Magellan's policy on trading up? Thanx, Ray
  21. The Legend will work perfectly well for geocaching. One thing I've noticed here is the number of problems with the fancier gps units that the cheaper ones don't have. I use an eXplorist 200 and never have any trouble with it. Good Luck, Ray
  22. Go to www.poi-factory.com and search on your gps. There is a guy named Robin there that has lots of info on that gps including his own site. Ray
  23. I would try another pc I suspect your cd player could be on its way out. Some cd players can be pickier than others. If you can access another pc see if you get the same problem.. Ray
