  1. Actually he plans on putting it back up for auction next year for charity. I can't speak for him, but I doubt it'll stay in his collection for too long...
  2. When I have my memorial coins made, there will be around 50-60 LE ones and 25 of those will go to my family, with some being donated to the WSGA, a few to some specific people and the rest placed at will. The standard coins will be for sale or trade and get placed in caches as well - 15 of the LE coins will have the same number, those won't be traded ( by me or sold and one will find it's way to Cold Lake in Alberta - when the coins are minted , I'll explain why. The LE coins won't be for sale but will be placed in special caches and meant for people to keep. The idea from the beginning was to let everyone know up front anyway just to avoid questions when the inevitable trading starts.
  3. I can understand business solicitations, and I probably violated the rules by posting the link to a particualr coin - the question is, can a thread about charity coins be made? There are legitimate ways of confirming that it is a charity solicitation or auction, but it seems to me that this would be something beneficial to the forums - and considering the times we are in, extremely helpful. I'm sure you alone can cite numerous examples of cases where it is in dire need. There is a fine line between discussing and soliciting for charity and it seems to me that it would be beneficial to keep the discussion here, in a moderated form, rather than have it go somewhere else. Just my opinion.
  4. You must now be pre-approved to bid on the auction - that means you have to submit your geocaching.com username as well before being approved. Anyone who has bid so far has been added to the list with the lone exception of fatboy586.
  5. Curses - pdxmarathonman has a huge bid on the canine coin...he keeps outbidding me. Here's the link: Canine Geocoin
  6. Ooh, I like this idea! I think everyone wins with this scenario! Here's what I say we do: Let the current auction proceed as posted. No auction removals, nobody losing eBay privileges, etc. After the auction ends, whomever wins (I assume it will be me at this point, but who knows?) puts the coin back up on eBay and auctions it off with 100% of the proceeds going to charity. Thanks, Carleen! Now I just have to figure out what charity I will choose! So, if you are planning to bid on this coin: WAIT!!! I hereby declare anyone who bids less than $1K on the current auction a weasel. And if you want to bid over $1K: WAIT!!! Normally, I'd refrain from commenting after a closure on an issue, but here goes. Fatboy586's alleged "investigative bids" ruined the chance of this auction achieving a legitimate result within the eBay policies. Another 0 feedback "weasel" can bid just under Moun10bike's proxy amount. Under these circumstances, it would have been appropriate to end the auction early, as Beefcider can legitimately claim that fatboy586 compromised the integrity of the auction. That's why I was hinting on ending the auction early. This potentially has the benefit of closure to avoid further speculations on motives and snide remarks, some of which we will never see in public. Some buyer requirements are being put in place right now so there are no zero feedback weasels to do such a thing. There have been some snide remarks thrown my way, but I wear an asbestos suit.

Thanks, Carleen! Now I just have to figure out what charity I will choose! OK - Jon, we never got to speak on the phone, but here's my plan. I have no idea where this auction will end - and I certainly hope you are the winner - if you re-auction it for charity, it will go for a much, much higher price. Any proceeds left over from this current auction, after the memorial coins, will go to minting geocoins for Corgi Aid and 100% of the proceeds from those coins will be donated. I'll make sure you and the WSGA are notifed and it's confirmed once the coins are made. Sound OK?
  8. I was outbid almost immediately! time to put in a higher bid...
  9. Jon can ask me to end the auction anytime and I will - he knows this and even has my home number. Jon bid what he thought was a fair price. Asking people to withdraw bids under these circumstances goes against Ebay policy and just isn't cool. Please don't email me on Jon's behalf. I know everyone doesn't agree with me and I'm fine with that, but Jon has a voice of his own. Go back and read his posts.
  10. Very cool. Also in the works is a Corgi coin to benefit Corgi Aid. It's still in the design process though... Here's the link to the Canine Coin. I already put my bid on it... Canine Geocoin
  11. Jon, I've already notified them, hopefully they'll do something about it - I sent you a PM...
  12. I hope you blocked him as a bidder for the duration of the auction. Yes - he was blocked immediately. His words, after bidding like crazy: Normally, I don't post this kind of info, but behavior like this is just dumb.
  13. OK - I had hoped this wouldn't happen but it seems some zealot with zero feedback pounded the auction with a ton of bids and then emailed me saying he doesn't want it he then asked me to cancel his bids so I did - This is for a cause, a memorial one, so please only bid if you are serious.
  14. I hope others see it that way...
  15. Indeed. I have put my Moun10bike Version 1 coin up to fund the making of some memorial coins for my brother who was killed at sea in October of 2000 while flying his F/A-18C Hornet. The Auction goes live at 4:00 PST Nov. 15th. All proceeds will go to the making of the coins and they'll be placed everywhere from Kansas to Utah and Arizona. I had originally contacted Jon about this and he said it was my choice so I'm going to go ahead. It's hard to part with a part of geocoin history, and I do have mixed feelings about it, but the idea of selling one coin to produce others of a memorial nature make it worth it to me.
  16. OK - it seems some of the rules have changed, and the approval of the final way point is a good one because it had created problems in the past. My original idea is that you'd have to log both coastal caches before you could log the central one - no information sharing allowed between cachers because that defeats the purpose. If it never gets logged, then so be it. The idea is that you have to find both the WA and GA caches before you get the coords for the NE/KS one. It's meant to be difficult, and to differ from other multicaches. Ideally it would be out in the middle of nowhere like Purdum, NE - which is a perfcet location. nothing like a crossroads of cornfields and it's just north of the NE national forest.
  17. OK - having the coords for a final waypoint of a multi approved is new to me. I've been out of caching for a year or so. I'm taking a road trip to Kansas City and have some friends there who would maintain the cache but I like the idea of it being in a more rural area. SeventhSon - you're right in the area I had in mind for the third waypoint, let me know if you're interested in placing and maintaining the final cache. I already have someone on Georgia.
  18. We have a cacher in Nebraska or Kansas city who would watch over the third one, but the thing is, if I understand it right - the third waypoint would be unknown until the ones in Georgia and Washington were found, so no approval would be needed. If it was found once in 10 years I'd be happy. I just like the concept of something more than a drive up ammo can cache, too many of which I'm starting to see. Not sure why someone would try and archive a cache just because they can't go to two other states. If that's the case, I'd about be done with gc.com. Can they really do that? I thought a cache was archived because of risks or violations concerning placement and so on.
  19. I have a nephew that's in Georgia and I'm in Washington - we were thinking about putting together a bi-coastal multi cache with the third waypoint in Nebraska. You'd have to do both caches to find the coords for the one in Nebraska. My question is would this be something that the moderators would approve? I have a Moun10bike geocoin to place and thought this would be an excellent way to do it.
  20. After seeing the video and the images, a straight rappel into the rift seems easier than a rope aided descent on swaths of crumbly funk. Looks like fun as long as there is no rockfall. If you were in there during even the most minscule of seismic events, you be pretty much screwed. videbo tu in caelum
  21. I didn't see the video, was there a good natural anchor for the rappel? Rapping into a rock tunnel sounds cool. I'll be there in the spring as well. videbo tu in caelum
  22. I keep seeing references to "an old brown rope" that has been left there to descend into the rift. I would advise someone to remove the rope and chuck it in the nearest trash can. There is no way of determining if it's safe just by "inspecting it" at the site. The only way to know if it's safe is if you placed it yourself and if it's rated for climbing or rescue. Using the rope that was left there is taking a massive risk. videbo tu in caelum
  23. here are a few of my misfit TBs, stupid names, stupid stories: http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=26942 http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=27002 http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=27427 http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=31003 videbo tu in caelum

  25. I've used the cellphone ruse on the side of the road a few times. WHen I get asked what I'm looking for, I just tell them I'm doing a survey project for my community college class. I explain that I have to take readings against others and triangulate coordinates to determine the proper blah blah blah. they always go blank and walk away. My favorite is busting other cachers and listening to them make up excuses...now thats fun! videbo tu in caelum
