  1. I have been watching and waiting for this GPS to come out for some time, and what will be the clincher is if it has great maps. If it fails in the mapping department, than I have come to the conclusion of going with Delorme's PN-20 as it suits my needs for hiking/camping. As for additional information on the Onix400, I read that the XM weather subscription could be "seasonal" if a person does not need it all year long, and that reactivating the service would not require a restarting fee. For me, the ultimate GPS would be one made with Garmin quality, the maps of Delorme's PN-20, and the weather radar of the Onix400
  2. When if comes to "overlaying" transparent custom made maps onto a base map, can that only be done on the GPSr, or can I take a section from MapSource on the computer and combined it with my new custom map? Thanks, Dan
  3. Thanks for the tips eaparks. I plan on mapping maps on a more realistic scale next time. The map building is all new to me, but its enjoyable. Anyway it took 2 hours 35 minutes and 19 seconds to complete *** after using the trim capabilities, map making is faster ***
  4. Howdy all.... I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am learning to build maps on my friends computer since he has the software, and at the present time the export from GPSMapEdit to cGSMapper is taking a long time (so far 45 minutes). I did down load a HUGH area of water but a small body of land. Considering that fact I cannot tell how much data I have total, I would appreciate hearing what kind of time frames others are seeing for completion at this step when building big maps. Thanks, Dan (This computer has a 3.2 CPU and 2GB of ram)
  5. They must be busy..... It took two days for my request to be filled. These maps have been a fun learning experience.
  6. gh Patriot.... check out this link for your question. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=153693
  7. LOL..... If 4 out of 5 cats preferred it, then I would buy it right this minute.
  8. Thanks Lucky46 and Lee.... I just dont feel I can go wrong with either of these units. I wish all choices were that good. I have to wonder if the audible sounds for both units are the same, but regardless, that is alright.
  9. Howdy folks, Although this is only my fourth post and having been a member for a short time, I am a daily lurker. Great site, lots of great info, and I enjoy the great attitudes from everyone. Anyway, I am really partial to the Garmin 60CSx and would like to make a purchase soon, but I am wondering why the 76CSx is $10.00 cheaper at gsponsale compared to the 60CSx. I have read comments by many stating the buttons on top make it difficult to use with one hand, but I can't imagine that would effect popularity. Also this unit has a 128 MB microSD compared to the 60CSx's 64 MB SD. I guess it seems somewhat odd to see the 76CSx suddenly lower. I do have a "comparison" question about these units though. I have come across many comments/concerns about the 60CSx having a very very low audible sound for auto-routing. How is the audible for the 76CSx in comparison? Thanks everyone...have a great day. Dan
  10. BRTango, Here is the link about mapping Google Earth topo's. http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/20...topo_map_i.html In the article, click on the blue link entitled "USGS topographical overlays". It will open up Google Earth to a place where it will make a portion of the area into a topo. After that point, go to anyplace else you want to see a topo of your choice. I noticed the topo map making abilities likes elevations of 14,000 feet or better. Well... I can't answer any of your questions... but I can ask one. How do you turn areas from Google Earth into topo maps? I'm not familiar with that feature but would like to give it a shot.
  11. Thanks CYBret..... BRTango...when I get home, I will post the link.
  12. Howdy folks, This is my first post to this amazing site and was hoping others could help with a question dealing with detailed maps for use on a GPSMAP 60 CSx. I have been looking all over the site for one week reading different postings and becoming familiar with many subjects but still lack some information. For starters, I would like to purchase software of detailed forested maps (U.S West) that can be downloaded into the GPSMAP 60 CSx. I have looked at all the Garmin maps my friend has for loading onto his CSx (an impressive and expensive collection), but none of the forested area's I want to explore are very detailed like the Garmin 24K tops for National Parks. Have I overlooked good maps? Second, with free time on my hands I was playing with Google Earth and turned area's into topo maps. Those maps can be saved as kml I believe. Is there a way to convert kml files into mps files that a GPSMAP 60 CSx will except? Thanks for your time and responses. BNW
