  1. If a thief is knowledgeable and has the resources he/she can just load the latest firmware and restore the unit to being as good as new! For that matter, the thief could even customize the unit to their liking if they want to keep it for their use. I don't see a permanent way to change any memory location to keep it unusable unless there is a hard-coded password required at every power-up. Now, how user-friendly would that be? Been There, Done Cached! Got the T-Shirt and the Hat!
  2. Instead of replacing the "WARNING", I replaced the text in the power-up screen that starts with "Do not". (I didn't try it, but I bet the "WARNING" could be replaced with "REWARD!") Using the same 7 characters... I was able to get almost six full lines of personal information on the screen. Even though I used less than the maximum number of characters, I could get no more than the six lines. Each line was centered on the screen. The memap software said I had 264 characters available. You can get a whole lot of information stuffed in 264 characters. It looks like something like this: At the top of the box is WARNING. Then within the box are the six lines. My Name Here My Street Address Here My City, State and Zip Here My Home, Work, and Cell Phone Numbers Here (wrapped to two lines) My Email Here Been There, Done Cached! Got the T-Shirt and the Hat!
  3. I created a tracklog analysis spreadsheet for my use. It uses MS-Excel, g7towin, and Delorme's Street Atlas 7/8/(9?) software. It is called: GPS_Track_Log_Graphical_Data_Analysis_Toolset .zip The zip file contains a PDF document that explains how to use it. It doesn't change the color of the lines but it does allow you to change the color and size of the flags identifying the tracklog points where the computed speed exceeded your set values. I developed it when I had a Garmin GPS III. It works for my GPS V, also. It should work with most Garmin units (I can only speculate). Maybe this will do what you want? 4. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GarminGPSpublic/files A long time ago I created a spreadsheet to do the work you are describing. It's stored at the URL above. It was set up to be used with the Delorme Street Atlas software and the g7towin software. Also, Garmin's Mapsource computes the speed from the track logs. The speed is simply computed as the change of distance (trackpoint1 to trackpoint2) divided by the difference in time between the two points. The time the trackpoint sample was taken is stored with the trackpoint location. The GPS-V also stores altitude/elevation data with the tracklog data; however it is not used in my computations because it makes so little difference to the speed computation results. 6. http://www.garmin.com/support/download.html The file is 4.9MB to download. It seems to be more stable than 4.06. I often get communications errors when downloading everything, especially long tracks. I just downloaded a 3000point track, map list, 300+ waypoints, 15 routes, etc. without crashing! I have a (dream) route that navigates to the 28 different ballparks in the USA and Canada. I like the way mapsource now shows a sliding percentage bar and shows the progress being made during the route recalculation. (It takes several minutes to compute on my 400Mhz PII.) It seems to be a better product than 4.06... Paul

  10. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gps-v/files/Geocache_Routing_Tools_V1.0.2.zip Taking the great hint from PhilipTB, I've placed the Garmin GPS-V version of my spreadsheet (version 1.0.2) that computes and graphically plots the shortest route to 25 waypoints (Geocache or otherwise) at the above URL. Hopefully this one is readable by all. paul_stratton@sbcglobal.net [This message was edited by paul_stratton on March 30, 2002 at 10:58 AM.]
  11. OK, where's a free website to put these files? Yahoo's briefcase "feature" doesn't seem to be working. I just don't understand. I set the Yahoo briefcase directories and folders to all be "Public" access and "I" can see it. I even sign out of Yahoo and login as a different user and I can still see it. Weird. Tell ya what, I'll put them in a special directory on my PC and allow everyone FTP access. Do you have an FTP program on your PC? If so, connect to the IP address of 66.137.227.192. Use the temporary login account of "gps" and the password is also "gps". Use lower-case. If this doesn't work, I'll just email them to all that ask. The total size of everything is less than 2MB. The IP address is valid until I reboot... (Windows, Don't Lock Up On Me Now!) Paul

  13. It looks like the CR.EXE file was removed from the http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/niknelb URL. Maybe the original author might put it, or an update to it there again? OOPS! The "Friends" folder was inadvertently made "private". It's now open to the public. My Mistake! Enjoy! My files, all are compressed zipped files, are located at: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/strattonpaul let me know what you think! paul_stratton@sbcglobal.net quote:Originally posted by zapped: quote:Originally posted by Mtn_Bkng_Dave:IN THE FRIENDS FOLDER? Um, no, that's an empty folder when I go into it. Weird thing is at the top level it shows "4 items" in "Friends" folder. [This message was edited by paul_stratton on March 27, 2002 at 06:34 PM.]
  14. I like it. Have you worked on the CR.EXE since the initial release? I'd like to try it with more waypoints... ...say, 250 or so. quote:Originally posted by philipTB: I've just thrown together a Travelling Salesman solver designed specifically for Geocaching and based upon genetic algorithms. It's still very buggy - especially the data entry part - but it solves a 30 cache route in about 15 seconds. The route is displayed graphically as it converges and can be printed out in its optimised order. If it's of interest I might be persuaded to polish it up a bit. Find it on http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/niknelb in the Software folder under CR.EXE
  15. I like it. It does do what I need to do! Thanks everyone for the great feedback.

  17. What I've been doing is downloading each page with the 25 waypoints. I save each as an individual file. After they are all saved, I use EasyGPS to load them into my GPS one file at a time. I then download all the waypoints from the GPS and save them into another file. From there I have to manually separate the geocache waypoints from the rest. What a way to run the railroad... Once they are all downloaded it's interesting to use them to compute shortest routes, etc. I just wish I could take more time to visit ALL of them...
  18. When I search for geocaches in my area, I get a list of 198 (so far) geocache waypoints and can only select a maximum of 25 (on the current page) at a time. My question is, "Can I download all 198 geocache waypoints as one EasyGPS file?" paul_stratton@sbcglobal.net
