  1. Here is a two for one special... The pipe (the cap has long since been removed) is the benchmark "Confederate" and the small benchmark to the left of Confederate is the benchmark "Don" This is another picture of "Confederate" looking the opposite direction of the first picture These two benchmarks are located just east of Canyon Ferry Lake, which is located about 20 miles east of Helena,Mt.
  2. Here is a picture of the benchmark "Bend" after I found it using a metal detector. It is located about 15 miles north of Helena,Mt. on the top of a steep mountain overlooking the Missouri River.
  3. Here is a picture of "Spokane" benchmark(RW0556) .It is located at the top of Spokane Butte in Montana.
  4. Thanks for the replies...that definately helps me out with both my questions. The one thing that is really challenging about benchmarking for me is when the gps coords aren't very accurate and I have to find them by the location description...but that is also what makes finding alot of these fun at the same time.I have one in particular that I found all the description information for,but believe that the benchmark might be just under the ground surface.I am going to take my metal detector out in a few weeks and try and find it...tons of fun looking for and finding these little pieces of history.
  5. Can someone also help me figure out which direction the 2 reference points would be from the benchmark...I am not sure exactly what "S 76 deg 22 min E and N 28 deg 31 min E would be direction wise.Thanks.
  6. I was reading a description of a benchmark that I am going to try and find and was wondering about the 2 additional reference marks that were mentioned. Here is the part of the description I was talking about..."STATION MARK--STANDARD USGS TABLET STAMPED---BEND 1948 - VABM 4566---, CEMENTED IN DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK. REFERENCE MARKS--STANDARD USGS REFERENCE TABLET STAMPED---BEND 1948--- AND CEMENTED IN DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, NO. 1 BEING 20.8 FT. FROM STATION, S 76 DEG 22 MIN E, NO. 2 BEING 28.2 FT. FROM STATION, N 28 DEG 31 MIN E"...would this be 3 seperate benchmark items, and should I get pictures of all 3 for my log post if I find this benchmark.Thanks.
  7. Thanks for the replies. My questions have been answered and my bank account drained ...oh well, at least I got an answer to my question. Thanks again.
  8. What all is required and involved in becoming a reviewer.I was just curious because there seems to be a shortage of them for Montana.Thanks.
  9. I went into town today to go geocaching, and stopped by 3 sporting goods stores here. The first two didn't carry them, but the third one had a stack of both sizes of them. They were $5 for the smaller ones and $8 for the bigger ones.I picked up 4 to get me started. Thanks for all the replies and links. Now,I'm getting them ready to hide in the next few weeks or so.I'm glad that someone in town has them,I was getting ready to either make a road trip or get some shipped. This will be way more convenient, especially since the guy behind the counter said they carry them all the time.
  10. I'm going to try the sporting goods stores here in town tomorrow, hopefully they have them. This site has great prices on them and the shipping said it was a flat rate of $7.95...seems very reasonable. Thanks again for the replies, they have been very helpful.
  11. How much do you think shipping would be,and for how many? Thanks also for the quick replies from everyone.
  12. I don't have an army surplus store close to where I live, and was wondering if anyone could tell me where the best and cheapest place is to find ammo cans of different sizes.I want to use them for some of my caches.Thanks.
  13. Now that you're hooked...nothing but fun times ahead.Geocaching is a blast!
  14. I am trying to find a smaller version of the geocaching document that you put in with your cache. The micro one from geocaching.com is approximately 4x6.I have seen them in micro caches that are approximately 1"x3".Does anyone know where I can find these smaller ones.Thanks.
  15. Thanks for the help, now I can get them both up and running...two more geocachers to add to the fun!
  16. I have been a member of geocaching.com for awhile now.My wife and son have done some caches and want to become members of geocaching.com also,so they can log there previous and new finds. My question is...can all three of us use the same e-mail address for our accounts or do we need to have seperate e-mail addresses? Thanks.
  17. Here is a picture of the cadastral survey disk I was talking about. If it is not listed in the benchmarks,do I still consider it a benchmark find. The reason I was wanting to know is,If it is still a benchmark find, I am keeping track of the ones I find and will mark this as my first benchmark find.Thanks.
  18. I found a cadastral survey disk while caching.I didn't see it listed in the benchmarks search and was wondering it this was a benchmark or not? Thanks.I have a picture of it on my desktop, but couldn't figure out how to post it here.
  19. Thanks for all the information,it was very helpful...I can't wait to get started "caching".Let the fun begin!!
  20. My brother in law was visiting from out of state and told me about finding caches. He took me out while he was here and we found 5 of them. What a blast. He had a garmin etrex vista cx.I am getting ready to buy a gps to get started with and was wondering if this would be a good one to get? Thanks.
