  1. LOL I hope these water requiring cache aren't in the desert. I just pictured some poor dude pouring the last of his water into a pipe to retrieve a cache and then dying from thirst on a 5 mile hike in 110F temps. I like the idea though.
  2. I'd say not and I presume that you have a light with you anyway. Hunting is not allowed at night so you're safe there and armed Geocachers are not the guys you have to worry about. I get banged up enough caching during the day, I'd probably really hurt myself if I did it at night.
  3. The server was down? Is this 1985? Sheeesh.
  4. There is no law guaranteeing your right not to be offended. It happens everyday. In regard to Geocaching, if the "offending" items are not against the rules then they can be placed and you'll have to deal with it. Seems to me that some folks are just too sensitive about being exposed to beliefs contrary to their own.
  5. Huh? There is a battery meter on the unit and I see 13 ft accuracy all the time and have no problems. Maybe some more info you help pin point the problem like what mode do you use it in?
  6. What I think AZcachemeister is getting at here is that you have to take scale in to account. A farm that covers thousands of acres with an erosion problem is a much more a concern than a couple of geocaches that happen to have "geotrails" leading to them. Maybe but I think it's all important, the big and the small. Ignoring many small abuses adds up to a large one.
  7. Guilty as charged We just bought a retirement home south of Phoenix. I will try to do something to help what desert remains.
  8. Are you a conservationist or preservationist? Do people know the difference? A conservationist believes in the wise use of the natural resources of the planet. A preservationist believes in the total protection of all things "natural", as in don't touch, don't go there (unless you're a ranger on the job who knows better than anyone else.). Total preservation from us, not for us. Save it for our grandkids, who won't be able to enjoy it either, because they will be required to "save it for their grandkids"! Very few things need TOTAL protection From humans! Be a conservationist and enjoy the wonders of this old world. John I suppose I'm both, there are areas that need to be preserved and those that need to be conserved and some that need to be restored. There is usually never just one answer to a problem (except Math) and that's the tough part as different camps fight for their share. On some days I'm part of the problem on others I'm part of the cure.
  9. I got in and found the cache, now how do I get out?
  10. Having a "belief" is one thing kept to ones self Expressing that belief to others that agree or disagree is another, Acting on those beliefs is another, all together, different thing especially if those beliefs are to the detriment of someone else's. Freedom of speech is great, you speaking against "freedom" of speech is OK, you taking away my freedom of speech is wrong.
  11. Isn't that a good thing for those caches in sensitive areas?? But aren't there also sensitive areas that are also close to roads and trails that might see frequent traffic? Could be "Cache Maintenance" button also be used to report excessive environmental damage in the cache area?
  12. What really frosts me is people replying to threads that don't really have anything constructive to say... oh, never mind.
  13. You're a noob Tisk, tisk...name calling, I'm so offended.
  14. I am accepting of the fact that others may have different views and opinions to me and I will tolerate those differences. This world would be pretty bland if we all were the same. Follow the rules of the game. If you don't like the rules then try and get them changed, if you can't then stop whining.
  15. True. Or he can spend zero dollars and say "No caching." Hmmm... Seems like a no brainer to me. That is so true. Also, people justifying environmental destruction because certain animals do it (moose, beaver,...) is just plain short sighted. Some of you youngins may not remember the state of our environment in the 50s, 60s, and into the 70s. We had rivers that caught on fire because they were so polluted, white-tailed deer were rare in some places and water foul pack up and left. Things are much better today don't let the pendulum swing back by being ignorant of how much work it takes to preserve our natural areas.
  16. There is no single answer here, you have to consider the area where the cache is placed. A cache in a park/playground is going to see a lot of activity no matter what. A cache off of a woodland trail/nature area is very different. Placing a cache up in a tree has me worry about wear and tear on the tree. Low impact.
  17. Not my idea of fun at all. I place caches for people to find, I get no thrill from DNFs. Placing caches up in tree could be a problem leading to the demise of the tree, I think such placements are bad.
  18. So long as it is not against the rules people can leave whatever they want. You don't have to look at it. I'd rather see religous tracks than lighters and knives in caches, and I've seen both. Don't care about political stuff either, everyone has an opinion.
  19. For me, Geocaching naturally goes with hiking, biking, sightseeing, vacationing, and business travel.
  20. Can we keep this topic in the Geocaching Topics, I suspect that it could be moved? I think this important for new-comers to see the reality of this situation and plan accordingly.
  21. I love Geocoins and have released several into the world and they do disappear at an alarming rate. I now buy one more than I need and keep it for myself. While you can rationalize the losses by saying "what did you expect, setting it free into the World?" but this stealing of personal property is getting really old. They are my TBs and Geocoins, I paid for them and I would like to track 'em. Buy your own if you want to keep them. Oh well, I still buy and release them, maybe one day I'll stop if it gets too bad.
  22. IMHO, cemeteries tend to become sad, forgotten places that end up as hang outs and targets of vandalism. Sending some respectful geocaching traffic there might not be such a bad thing. Caches must be placed using all the usual permissions, most I've seen were just outside the boarders as they are private property. However, even with permission I don't think grave site/headstone caches should be allowed because it suggests the idea to others who might not observe the rules.
