Caches (Travel bug hotels) in airport terminals?
succotash replied to Andronicus's topic in General geocaching topics
This one is not in the terminal, it is outside. But it's on the airport grounds and they did get permission from the Director. August Regional Airport Cool Can TB Hotel -
is it a golf ball or is it a cache
succotash replied to jasondulac's topic in General geocaching topics
We found one in 2007 - it was homemade by a creative cacher. It is still active. -
Demographics of the Geocacher?
succotash replied to microvision's topic in General geocaching topics
Maybe North Dakota just has the most geocachers who block quantcast. -
You do not need to trade anything for a TB or geocoin. It's always nice to say in your logs, as you said in your post, that you are picking it up to move it along. The owner of of the TB or geocoin will appreciate you moving it!

Bookmark lists to highlight favorite caches
succotash replied to Opalblade's topic in General geocaching topics
Yes, thanks Mertat, I should have mentioned in my previous post that I did try that as well and the recipient said they were still unable to to view it. They only way they could view it was if I made it public in addition to shared. I'm wondering if this is a new problem related to the latest update. -
Renegade Knight is correct - the letterbox you found is referenced at this atlasquest link: Star and Fish Gate Some geocaches are also letterbox hybrids. You can find and log those the hybrids on geocaching.com, but the one you found is a letterbox only. Hope you continue to enjoy caching!

Bookmark lists to highlight favorite caches
succotash replied to Opalblade's topic in General geocaching topics
I recently tried to make a bookmark that was shared but not visible on the cache page - like NiraD's second category - but was unable to do so. Clicking only on "shared" but not "public" resulted in nothing. The only way to share it was to click both share and public, which results in the bookmark being viewable on the cache page. As a test I went to NiraD's profile to look for the two he mentions. Neither are there, the only bookmarks visible are the three in his first category of public bookmarks. Has anyone else noticed this or have a suggestion? -
Why does every activity have to involve a smiley? Not allowing a smiley shouldn't prevent cachers from interacting using various technologies.

Suggestions on what to include in a GC backpack
succotash replied to Tim1968's topic in How do I...?
Some of the things mentioned in this thread are excellent swag items, especially for more rural caches. Just make sure they are well-packaged. If you find a good deal on them you could stock up and use them as swag (e.g., first-aid kits, space blankets, emergency ponchos, hand sanitizer, gloves, clean dry socks). It's nice to have hand sanitizer along. At least in our area (east coast) logsheets/books are often moldy. -
Agree with Xaa. Keep it private.

We noticed that the caches in the Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve have been re-enabled (e.g., GC1KZWB). -

Bookmark lists to highlight favorite caches
succotash replied to Opalblade's topic in General geocaching topics
We have one public book for favorites - we say in the intro they are favorites we'd look forward to doing again for one reason or another. We identify the state and usually say a few words about why the cache was a hit with us. As far as your plan - it might get complicated to create separate favorite lists based on different attributes - some caches might hit them all! We've got bookmarks that were required/requested by owners of challenge caches. We've also got quite a few private bookmarks. Some are for ongoing challenges (it often takes us years to complete one). Several are for trips we plan to take. One is for caches that require a boat. One is caches of interest in our state. One is caches of interest elsewhere. One is for puzzles we'd like to solve even if we never get to the final cache. And so on... We really appreciate the bookmark feature. -
Does anyone go caching when it's raining?
succotash replied to ItisTrue's topic in General geocaching topics
We're rarely deterred by rain, heat, or snow (well, if we had any snow). We're more schedule driven. If we have an opportunity to cache, or we're on a road trip somewhere and have caching plans, we try to let the weather just add to the experience. Yesterday we brought along a change of pants, socks and shoes in preparation for some possible rainy day wetlands area caching on the way to a business in another state. We ended up having to stop at a store and buy dry shirts, too. It was well worth it, we had a great time and found an excellent puzzle cache involving tree identification. -
If there weren't liability issues... and a farmer had an old-style abandoned silo in an accessible location that cachers could scale to reach an ammo can near the top... To do it properly, special equipment would be required in the form of a harness. But it would give you a bit of altitude!

Bushes/Hedges/Evergreens etc.
succotash replied to Nervous Nick's topic in General geocaching topics
We've seen a few hidden in American hollies. Can't imagine why someone would want to do that. -
Yes! Team Succotash = Corn + Bean. We were already married when we discovered this new passion. It adds another great dimension to things we already love to do. Who wouldn't think it's a great date to head into the swamp after an ammo can?!? Nice thread, thanks.

Thank you scout! Hopefully the TB is only temporarily on his rearview mirror, maybe as a good luck charm...

We have a couple of island caches and the one suggestion we'd make is that if your goal is to get people out on the lake, do the best you can to make sure the cache can be found once they get there. At least, that's what we prefer. We've tried to figure out how to hide the caches from muggles that might visit the islands but still make sure the cachers can find them (one is an ammo can and the other is a lock-n-lock and both are connected to trees with wire). Your reviewer might have thoughts on the rating. We submitted one as a 4.5 because we thought it might be close enough to the shore for a decent swimmer, but the reviewer suggested than unless our local cachers were Johnny Weismuller we should rate it a 5. We're glad we rated it a 5 because even if someone was physically able to swim to it it's not safe because of the boat traffic.

One of our favorite TBs, She's Da Bomb, is in Quebec. We decided to attempt to translate the most recent log entry. The results from cutting and pasting into several free online translators are very funny... The Log Entry: Qu`elle est belle.... Je vais faire un vrai GINO et l`accrocher au rétroviseur de ma voiture sport.... Le pétard.... Beau brin femme, de quoi à faire frémir bien des hommes Per Yahoo Babel Fish: Qu `it is beautiful…. I will make a true GINO and L `to hang to the rear view mirror of my sports car…. The detonator…. Beautiful bit woman, of what to make quiver many men Per Google Translator: `What is beautiful .... I'll make a real and GINO `hang on the rearview mirror of my sports car .... The firecracker .... Beau stranded woman, enough to make many people shudder Per Bing Translator: Whereas it is beautiful.... I'll do a true GINO and snap to my sports car mirror.... Squib.... Beautiful woman, core of what to do well horrifying men ...but what does the log entry REALLY say? If anyone can properly translate this we'd appreciate it!

First of all, welcome to geocaching and congratulations on your initiative to allow caching in your park system! I have one suggestion I haven't seen elsewhere (and welcome other cachers opinions on this). What if at the first cache event (or the first cache event held in each park, depending upon how large and dispersed your system is), you offered this as a prize - the opportunity to place the first cache within that park? I would think that would be an amazing prize - the opportunity to find the most choice spot for a cache in a "virgin" park. And, because the caching community participating in the event would feel some "buy-in" in the cache placement, perhaps the prize winner would be sure to place a fine cache (read: ammo can). Thoughts?

Our procrastination in logging those January 1 caches could viewed as cleverly waiting for the bugs to be discovered and fixed.

We were surprised and embarrassed when local cachers decided to give us a golden ammo can. We're not social cachers at all and had never attended an event at that time (the only two we've attended since involved helping out the Army Corps and a treasure hunt on an island). The community only knew us through our caches, log entries on caches found, and occasional meeting on the trail. In fact they had a really hard time figuring out how to give us the golden ammo can since we really aren't social and never did respond to their heartwarming attempts to get us to attend one of their meetings! They finally hid it in the woods and sent us an email to go get it. They are great people. The best thing we could think of was to get permission from a nearby sanctuary and re-hide the container in the manner we most appreciate (nice walk through a natural area to a scenic place) and called it The Golden Rule.

Making the world feel a whole lot smaller
succotash replied to HeliDood's topic in General geocaching topics
I gained over 100 pounds. Since birth. Back OT, we had a bit of "small world" feeling recently... hundreds of miles from home, stopped for a cache and ended up signing the log next after a friend from the local area. Nice! -
Welcome new cachers! And thanks, Markwell. In using your information in years past not only were many caching questions answered, but we discovered the Museum of Depressionist Art.
