  1. I'm curious if anyone else is having a problem with geocaching.com .kml crashing the google earth version 5.0.11337.1968 (beta)? Everytime the .kml loads caches my google earth crashes. I haven't been able to find out what's causing it. Maybe somebody knows a fix? I have reinstalled google earth then delete and reinstalled the .kml with no luck.
  2. Anyway GC accounts for the difference in caching difficulty with the ratings. I would agree people tend to inflate these ratings, the vast majority of caches should never exceed 2/2, for any number of reasons but it still does its job. If you want to know what the average difficulty/terrain of the caches you find download any of the software that computes it for you and then look at your "score." It is essentially the same thing as challenge points. Challenge points is just a response to the fact that people will give a 5/5 to any old cache just because they put good camo on a cache on top of a steep hill.
  3. I'm out here in Mobile, AL and I found a cache that I'm curious what you guys back in San Diego think of it. I have never seen one like it. The cache owner rated the cache as 4/4.5 and listed it as a multi. I read some of the posts and got excited at the possibility of sludging around in some local swamps. I got to the first stage which actually took some time(30 min) to find, pretty good camoflage. When I opened it up, on the cover of the log it said it was a "liar" cache and that this was the only stage. In order to log it you must tell a story or in other words lie about the caching experience in your log. What do you guys think? Have you guys seen any in San Diego like that? I know I haven't.
  4. Anyone else having problem generating queries from your uploaded routes? I can't figure it out. I uploaded a route. It's under 500 miles and it's the correct format. It uploads just fine but whenever I try and convert it into a pocket query it goes to groundspeaks error reporting page. Please let me know what I am doing wrong.
  5. Although their website doesn't have a "caches along a route" feature check out www.roadfood.com by Jane and Michael Stern. They and their corps of tasters have found great local food specialties all over the country. The restaurants they recommend range from holes-in-the-wall to white-tie-and-tails, although they tend towards the former (since that's where all the good local food is to be found anyway). And a lot of them are right along the Interstates. A few years ago, I spent about three months in Yuma one weekend but most of the time I was in the mechanic's shop getting my dead car fixed, so I don't recall much about the restaurants. But there was one INCREDIBLE!!!! place in Sedona, Arizona, with a unique local type of chili, unlike anything I've had anywhere else. It's big chunks of meat in a watery, but very spicy, broth. I will try to find its name and post it here, but if you just go to the old courthouse (or whatever it is) where the tourist info office is, they can probably tell you. Oh, and then you have to drive through Texas. I feel your pain. But if Boudin King in Jennings, Louisiana, is still in business, GO THERE!!!!!!!!! (!) And once you get to Mobile, go north on I-65 a ways and you can find Perdido Vineyards. Yes, believe it or not, somebody has been making wine on the Alabama Gulf Coast for thirty years or more. It's not exactly the taste we expect here in California, but they do some, er, interesting things with the grapes that grow in that climate. Expect sugar. Lots of sugar. Not that I'm the biggest fan of texas but to be fair there are some cool spots there. They actually have some sweet state parks throughout the state. Also if you're on I-40 you have to stop at the Big Texan and try to eat the 72 oz steak. I have and I got down 65 oz in the alotted time. That was pretty fun. Thanks for the tips on food. I will check out that page.
  6. Try google earth. If you turn on some of the deeper layers it will show you all the trails in national parks. if your really motivate you can super impose state park trail maps onto google earth, using the function inside google earth. Also if you play around with the function you can trace out the trails and then export them to your GPS. For other trails you can use Backpacker.com. They don't have all the trails but a select few hiking routes they have made, they are everything from major trails(PCT, AT, CDT) to city trails. What is nice though is they offer mapping software for free from Trimble. For some reason I can't get mine to work but from what I hear it's pretty good.
  7. I'm driving to Mobile, AL from SD and was wondering if anyone needed me to drop any TB's or coins along the way, johnny appleseed style? Let me know. Also if you have any food recommendations for Yuma or anywhere else along the way that would be great.
  8. It could be from another caching group like terracaching. Geocaching.com is not the exclusive caching group. It also could be a peak log. Good luck in your search for answers.
  9. Even so ... The wild-ride of Passing Wing and D-Jollymon is recognized as a defining chapter in the folk culture of San Diego County Geocaching, yes? Funny thing, read the most recent log entries on the following cache page. Carl Jr's 500th Cache!! What happened to passingwind and D-Jollyman?
  10. I will echo jahoadi and john and skillet, with the exception of following seas, they make you sick and are harder to drive in. I will follow you at some point down to the gulf coast but not pensacola but Mobile, AL, home to the . Enjoy yourself and goodluck. Mark
  11. I am so proud of my alma mater. By the way I always thought that story was more of an urban legend. If I remember correctly after he vaporized that grill the quasi competition was no longer allowed. Still very cool though.
  12. No expert but definitely think it is a gold eagle. They are actually almost common in some spots around LA. Some of the islands around there are actually having problems with them killing too many foxes. The other option would be a thunder bird and if you think that bird is that maybe you should report it here.
  13. Many times these poor placements are by cachers who have an imbalance between the number of hides (too many) to finds (not enough). Early on in caching there was an unwritten rule that you had to get a few hides under your belt so that you could learn what makes a proper placement. Experienced cachers should also be more honest in our logs about caches that could be problematic. GC.com should seriously consider instituting a rating system to let hiders know their cache may suck. just had a question to see how everyone feels about this... What do u think is an appropiate ratio from found:hides? I am not an uber cacher, but I think it's up to you. I have close to 700 finds but zero hides. If all you want to do is hide then that is up to you. It wouldn't hurt though to find a few so you get a good idea how to hide, you know what's good and what's bad.
  14. Would have been all over this had I found out a little early. Enjoy yourself.
  15. Actually LLOT, Snakes can hear. They just can't see--at least caches. Is that US currency made into his flute? Great pictures by the way. Never been to India or Bhutan. I've been in the area though.
  16. I've already called the police. They should be there in minutes.
  17. Congrats Sled Head. Give our best to the Mrs.
  18. Are you saying that Unknown to U is the Chaotic Cacher???? Do you have any evidence of this accusation? Pictures? Video? Eyewitness? I don't understand what you are suggesting? My interpretation isn't clear about the cacher(s) but it is clear about the types of caches rjbloom & co. is referring to. Horrible placements with little regard for the finder to inconspicuously make the find. Often these caches are knowingly placed within view of muggles, hence the request to 'use stealth'. But many of these caches that ask for stealth also don't contain any meaningful hints. These placements are also insensitive to the safety of the nearby employess, business owners, and residents. When your cache gets blown up by the police it should be a colossal wake up call that you're doing something wrong. It could seriously affect the future of our hobby. My sentiments exactly. Urban Caches of that type are stating to be no fun at all. Alot of them I feel really uncomfortable doing and being uncomfortable is not what this game is about. Ditto! Well said! When it was just a few of these obnoxious hides around, it wasn't too bad and even could be entertaining. When some people began hiding these kind of hides in numbers--thinking it was cute to try to embarrass cachers, it ceased to be fun or funny. We usually put them on the ignore list, but not everyone can or will do that. Maybe the bomb incident will make these hiders think twice? More hides in the wilderness please! No more of these hiding them in a Taco Bell Trash can. Yo no quiero Taco Bell.... Placing caches every 500 ft in bushes in "nature" isn't that much more enjoyable. No PO and no geo-trails.
  19. If you read the post there was no perceived "threat." Plus there was no crime permitted. Law enforcement or not, encroaching on public property because you feel you don't want something within a certain distance of your special govt. property is in a legal gray area as well. If your that afraid push the fence out some more, perhaps to the distance you need, instead of hasseling civilians. Or even crazier put signs up, unless your dumb enough to think you can hide a compound like that.
  20. Not that I agree with the placement of the cache but the FBI over stepped their bounds a bit. It is public property. Doesn't matter if its 300 ft or 1 foot from their fence it is still public property. If we can place them on bases in IRAQ, then we sure as hell can place them on roads in the US. There is no need for what happened.
  21. I can't imagine his were any worse than some others I have found. Too bad.
  22. Anyone know why demon666 is picking up all of his caches on the hill off of proctor valley road?
  23. Is this going to be an event? Just curious. I would love to come as well. I have dominoes solved but I am stuck on rankings.
  24. I am going to sound a little bitter, but what causes more damage to the park, people or dogs? I try to follow the rules wherever I go and I haven't been out to ABDSP but give me a break. My dog has never dumped garbage(specifically beers cans and bottles), never carved his name in anything, never purposely tried to run over an animal on the road, taken his vehicle offroading(don't think this bad but using it as an example), never stolen from or damaged archaeological sites, never dug up an archaelogical site(legally or not), etc. All these do more damage than anything my dog could do, but dogs are banned? Give me a break. And yes I do carry out my dogs feces whenever possible, which is more than most backcountry backpackers do. Just me spouting. No need for a response.
  25. I meant puzzle 10 if your near there and I am in the same boat as you RJ. Got 1-6 but struggling with the rest. Got some where with #19 though.
