  1. I removed the Username profile search since it didn't work as I expected. If anyone knows how to formulate a URL with a username on it to get to the profile page, please let me know. The username found and hidden are still there though. Note that Auto will never get you to a username list because it assumes that random text is a cache keyword. Or at least that's the default now. Thanks for your feedback. Jeff
  2. Hey SF Bay Geocachers, I've got a new tool for you to try. It's called Geocaching Quick Search and it makes searching for just about anything on geocaching.com easier and faster from a browser or a mobile phone. Check it out at http://boulter.com/qgs/ And read more about it at http://boulter.com/qgs/info.html I'm interested in your feedback before I announce it to a wider audience. Thanks, Jeff
  3. Check out this TechTV article. Ok, they're not exactly being paid to geocache, but they probably could! It would be interesting if there was a way that geocachers to could contribute to maps as we track our paths all over the place. Jeff
  4. So where are all the new caches in the south bay? There isn't a "new" cache closer than 17 miles away from me, which is very abnormal. Of course I have plenty of others to do, so it's not really a problem. Is Hemlock taking a break? If he is, I fear the deluge of caches when he resumes! Jeff
  5. quote:Originally posted by Green Achers: I've been able to down load his Perl gpx2html and the MacPerl program. Putting everything together is more difficult than solving Fizzy's Puzzles! Now I'm wondering if I should just learn MacPerl and write my own program. It might be faster than trying to figure out my problems. Are there any Mac/Cachers out there that successfully upload Geocaching data to a PDA (besides using Virtual PC - which is really slow and pains taking)? You don't need to use MacPerl unless you're on OS 9. OS X comes with regular 'ol perl which should run Fizzy's stuff just fine. Let me know what you're trying to do and I may be able to help. Yesterday I wrote some code to take the zipped gpx files I get from pocket queries and automatically convert them to pdb files suitable for CacheMate. Much less hassle than GPX Spinner/Plucker and faster. Jeff
  6. I got an email from fizzy a few days ago. He's apparently well enough to write perl code. :-) Jeff
  7. I noticed that Marky and Joani passed the 2000 finds mark. Congrats M&J! I don't think I'll get there myself until 2005 at the soonest! I recently realized that I haven't seen much from marwagsalot recently. From his profile page, he hasn't even logged in since September. Anybody know if the dog retired? Jeff
  8. quote:Originally posted by Marky:Here is what I have to scroll through any time I want to get my caches and my recent logs. It's very annoying, espcially when I try to look at the page on my phone. Travel Bugs that you found: Generic Bug (snip) I'd love to feel bad for you and I agree that the page should handle this bettter, but some of these are TBs that were touched and immediately put back into a cache. While it may boost numbers, I'm not sure if that helps the goal of the TB at all. Jeff

    Yahoo Map Link

You can still link to Yahoo Maps using lat and long, it's just not documented. It's perfectly OK though. The format is http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?mag=9&lat={latitude}&lon={longitude} mag can be adjusted to a different zoom level. Jeremy, could you add the link back in? I've also added it to my Coordinate Converter Page Jeff
  10. Taking this one step further, I'd like to see an expanded view of the user stats listing that simply included the log. I think it's interesting to read through someone's logs, but click each individual log to read it is too much work. I imagine it would look a lot like a blog. Thanks! Jeff
  11. I've often had to convert coordinates from one format or another or wanted to see a map of coordinates that isn't the primary waypoint on a cache (a multi-cache for example). I've tried some of the tools out there, but they all seemed to have different problems, so I decided to create my own. GPS Coordinate Converter It converts between formats, and has a bunch of links to map those coordinates on other sites (more than the cache page). It also can create LOC files for download and there's a cool bookmarklet that allows you to highlight coordinates on any web page and jump straight to the tool. Please check it out and let me know if you find it useful or have suggestions for making it better. It should work on any modern browser. Thanks and enjoy, Jeff
  12. quote:Originally posted by boulter: So, I decided to fix those problems and put up my own page. You can just slap in a string of coordinates and click right on over to a map. Based on feedback any my own selfish desires, I've revamped the GPS converter tool considerably. It now has links to 10 other websites with maps and other info. There's a cool bookmarklet that allows you to select coordinates on any webpage and dump them right into the tool. It allows you to open links a new window it looks a lot better. Check it out at http://boulter.com/gps/ and let me know if you have suggestions for further improvement. Jeff
  13. quote:Originally posted by KennyHannahJacob:I found a helpful site on the web that might be of use to other geocacher's. The URL below links to a site that converts between three coordinate types. I've used that site in the past too, but two things about it annoyed me: you had to enter the longitude and latitude separately and you still had to cut and paste the coordinates to map them. So, I decided to fix those problems and put up my own page. You can just slap in a string of coordinates and click right on over to a map. Yet Another Coordinate Converter Thanks for the opportunity to introduce it and I'm interested in feedback on how to make it even better. Jeff

He candidate had other issues that didn't make him ideal, so the puzzle was not the deciding factor. quote:Originally posted by The Rat: I strongly suspect that if you had handed that unsuccessful candidate the printout from this new cache and the two of you had looked at it together, you would have solved it. You have to think about why that is so.... Well that definitely confirms I've figured out at least some of that puzzle, but my hunt for this this morning was unsuccessful. I thought that when I got there something would pop out at me, but I guess I need to research a bit more. quote:Originally posted by The Rat:As of yesterday 23 people (excluding me and the approvers) had looked at the cache but only one person was watching it. That would be me watching it! I did that because I knew you'd be watching the audit trail and I didn't want to jack up my numbers too much checking for new logs. :-) Jeff
  15. I wanted to tell this story in a log, but I didn't want to give anything away, so I thought I'd tell it here. A few months ago I was trying to fill a position at work and I had to interview a candidate. The candidate looked promising, but I wanted to see how smart he really was - how well he thinks and solves problems. I also sometimes like to ask general knowledge questions to see how well-rounded the candidate is or is not. At the time I was working one of The Rat's caches and it occurred to me that it would be a perfect test of all these things. I hadn't finished solving it myself yet, but after spending several hours on it, I figured I was about 70% of the way there. What a great idea, I thought, I could get this cache figured out and evaluate a candidate at the same time! I modified it slightly to take out geocaching-specific references and brought it to the interview. I asked him the standard stuff first, then I gave him this test. He got flustered pretty quickly and had trouble even with the easier parts of the puzzle. He spent about 15 minutes staring at it, looking pretty stupified the whole time. Giving up at the end of the interview, he took the puzzle with him when he left and said he would try to get back to me with a solution. I didn't hear from him again and we decided not to hire him. Later, when I discovered the solution to the puzzle, I felt kinda bad that I had done that to him. Still, it was pretty revealing and an interesting use of these puzzle caches! Jeff

I know these boxes were there before the caches. Does anyone know for what purpose these boxes were originally constructed? I think the ones you are refering to were placed there by the cache hiders. I don't believe they were there before. They definitely looked much older than the caches. In both cases it was an ammo box placed inside the wooden box. The box had no top or bottom. One of them was one of your caches, another was not and seemed unlikely that a cacher would bring the materials to construct a cache in this obscure location that could have hidden the cache just as well under a tree or bush. Jeff

  19. Ok, so where can I get some Grade A magnetic micro cache containers around here? I've checked Target and Walmart and Home Depot. Only Home Depot had them and they were the kind that is molded inside for the shape of a key, leaving little room inside. The most popular ones I've seen are the ones with a clip and open lengthwise. If there are others which are more durable or otherwise superior, I'd love to hear your opinions. Jeff

    Yahoo Map Link

I've made sure that the Maps people at Yahoo are aware of this problem and hopefully we can get this restored. Jeff
  21. quote:Originally posted by The Rat:PhilippeGPS and I found Amazing Race today, so it is still out there. I'd post the URL, but I can't get onto the website to look it up due to Server Too Busy errors. Jeremy needs another server or greater bandwidth. It is a challenge, and I think underrated in difficulty level, but it takes you to some wonderful spots, most of which I hadn't been to before. I suggest doing it with at least one other geocacher. Two sets of eyes are definitely useful Did you guys use the Fast Forward or should I plan on doing the road block? I did the first waypoint this weekend and planning to move on to the next soon as this cache is creeping up on my closest caches. Jeff
  22. quote:Originally posted by The Rat:My cache Eschew Obfuscation (dead link not included) has been found by corporate security and confiscated. Anyone waiting for an opportunity to go back and log should avoid the area. I will try to retrieve the cache and place it elsewhere nearby. I cannot log on the cache page because Groundspeak has apparently taken it offline, so I am posting this here. I know of at least one cacher who told me they were planning to go back. Why was placed in the middle of a company's private property anyway? Even though we weren't approached by security when we tried it, we thought we would be any minute. Jeff
