  1. do you need to leave something in a cache if you take a travel bug? I found a couple bugs today but didn't have anything to leave. I will be relocating them soon though. I thought it was more important to move a bug than to take/leave equal behind. Now that I have a bug though, if i find another one when i drop this one off, i'll make the equal switch. any thoughts?

We feel you should leave as good as you take. TB, coin or whatever. TBs are made for the purpose of trading and to follow through its paces. Our thought is you leave as good as you take or at least that is how we play the game..... could be wrong, just our thought. :anibad:

  2. strangest thing i've seen- 1) Cheese Grater 2) Bowling Ball

Strangest thing i've moved- Someone's car key to a Ford Escort that they released in TX and its goal was to get back to Wyoming so they could use their car (i'm assuming they had another one) :anibad:B)

Our Dodge Ram has it's own # and travels twice a year from Kearney to Myrtle beach. Catch us is you can. Still waiting for FTFMonterry

  3. The cache machine idea leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Going out with family or a friend or two: fine. But some of these cache machines have 5 or more experienced cachers (500+ finds)along, where is the fun (besides social) in the find then? You might as well start at the edge of the hide area & walk thru in an extended line.

I personally find it hard to believe that everyone in the caching machine has solved a given puzzle on the days agenda & aren't just racking up caches on someone else's brain power.

Makes me wonder how the cache owners; especially those who have put some effort into the puzzles feel after 10+ people have rolled thru & they all log a find?

You read our minds. That's where we fall too. ;)

  4. It stays with the car. People can log it at events and such, but don't let anyone post a photo of the tracking number. Otherwise, you get virtual logs by people who never saw the TB. That can get your TB locked, and even On Star can't get you out of that one!

Just ask the poster to delete or edit the photo, or delete it yourself with a note to them, if this happens. TBs should only be logged by people who physically saw them in person.

That is a perfect answer for my question on the other forum. Thanks a bunch. :(

  5. As I’m reading this thread I’m having a vision:

    Cacher dies.

    Cacher ascends to Geocacher Heaven.

Cacher slowly moves along the conveyer queue toward the pearly-gated entrance where an eighty-foot-tall Saint Jeremy reaches down, picks up the cacher, and scans him across the Karmatron, which emits a *boop* as the cacher’s score appears on the display.

Cacher is then dispatched to his computer-selected Eternal Caching Ground where he proceeds to spend the rest of eternity either:

    1. Hiking to beautiful waterfalls and mountain summits with endlessly full PQs, a shiny new Garmin loaded with never-die batteries, and a hot supermodel,
    2. Lifting lamp post skirts in hot parking lots next to idling cars with an intermittent Magellan and an incontinent Chihuahua, or
    3. Moderating forum threads which are packed with people endlessly arguing the merits of hiking to beautiful waterfalls and mountain summits with endlessly full PQs, a shiny new Garmin loaded with never-die batteries and a hot supermodel – versus – lifting lamp post skirts in hot parking lots next to idling cars with an intermittent Magellan and an incontinent Chihuahua.

It takes many types to suit all cachers. You do the ones you like and don't go where you don't like. You place them in interesting places and in areas that need stelth. That way all are happy.

  6.

We find that the "all about numbers" groups are not true geocachers, disrespectful and rude. If people did not go to the trouble of providing fun and interesting caches, where would be the fun in caching.

I admit that I am an all about the numbers cacher. just look, i have 250 finds and have yet to place one. I thank those who have placed a cache. yet being a numbers cacher I am absolutely a true geocacher.

While I like my numbers to groooowwww.... part of ADDING to the game is hiding your own caches. It helps those whose caches helped your numbers grow, grow theirs too.

We have set ourselves a goal of 10%. We place 1 cache for every ten found. In that way, we feel we give back to the sport.

i will place caches once i think of a placement worth bearing my name

  7. /shrug

I don't get bent out of shape about...if a cache goes missing is there any real damage done? No, it's just a game, activity, hobby...whatever you want to call it.

    It's just part of life...

It should not be just part of life. If you spend a lot of time making up a cache and figuring someting unique then if it disappears , yes, it is a big deal. Play fair!!!!!!

  8. Alot of these types of caches that I have looked at seem to include some kind of stamp inside of them. Is this required? What is the stamp for?

In letterboxing you would have your own stamp that represnts you. The letterbox would have a stamp that represents the letterbox. You stamp your own log with the letterbox stamp. You stamp the letterbox log with your stamp. That's their version of a find/trade system.

There already exists such a game; it is called geocaching. Play it or leave it.

  9. As a fairly new geocacher, I'm still running into different types of containers and sometimes have to really watch to make sure I've closed them up right. I am very careful however to make sure I've rehidden them as they were.

Is it possible the people finding these caches don't understand how to properly close? or the importance of making sure they are closed?

I believe the "numbers" people must have met just about any type of cache possible. The "don't know how to reclose excuse does not work for me. I think it is still just a case of laziness and disrespect.

  10. Hee hee! I just checked on the cache you mentioned to me yesterday. The water level is so high still that I would not even turn the van around in the spot that we parked in when we originally logged our find. I was afraid that the van and us would be in the drink as well as your cache. I agree, if this one is the one with the bug in it, email the owner of the bug and let them know the situation. We can mount a search and rescue party when the flood waters recede about two or three feet.

Thanks, bud. We will hold you to the S&R come drier weather.

  11. ever open a cache only to find moldy mildewed trash that makes you wish you had a serious hand sanitizer in your caching bag?

    Okay, remember how that feels.

ever open a cache and find a geocoin... an honest to goodness unactivated geocoin...?

Okay, now remember how that feels.

Do you HAVE to trade even/trade up?

    wrong question.

What can I leave behind that will make the next cacher fall even more in love with this game and his fellow cachers?

    right question.

now get out there and leave some kick-butt, do-unto-others kinda swag

    Amen! :antenna:

Have often encountered the "mouldy treasure" and I completely agree. It is still true "do as you would like to have done to you.' :antenna:

  12. We have been checking on some of our caches. Due to this extra ordinary Winter thaw, a lot of our specials are either underwater or totally washed away. This in spite of the fact that we were so careful when we placed them. I.E. rocks on them or tied with fishing line. Now what???? Do we wait for Spring to see how many are missing or what :D:D:)

  13. Can anyone tell me what makes a cache Winter accessible.

We have placed caches in the Winter only to have complaints from some? cachers that they are not Winter friendly.

We do cache in the Winter and expect to have to deal with snow and digging. Other than placing caches indoor during Winter, what is the solution?

  14. OK, here's the scenario.

I load my pocket query, or more often than not, just add a bunch of waypoints to my GPS.

A week later, I head out caching. I'm driving down the road, and lo and behold there is a cache up ahead. Let's go for it! Oh look, a TB, I should move this along. I'll take it with me! La la la la la la on down the road we go, it's a long ride home. I get home. I log the TB as retrieved. And in a few days I'll go put it somewhere.

I still haven't read the TB page.

That's just one scenario. What we want, and what actually happens don't always go hand in hand. The more specific a goal you have, the less likely it is that the travel bug will actually follow it.

Also, the emails to people do not always get to them. Some people are blocked, and some providers don't let them through.

Here's what I think, for what it is worth:

People spend time figuring a purpose for these bugs, so we can have fun.

The least we can do is read the mission

If we can help attain it's goal , GREAT, if not, then we DISCOVER the bug and leave it there. 2 seconds to read the purpose is not too much to ask. I say this because I have launched bugs in Florida, with the mission of making it home. Never heard of them again. Same story with some placed in Ontario. Now I just launch them and see where they end up.

  17. What's the etiquette or proper respect that cachers should have in regards to trackable items that aren't owned by anyone in particular? Are there any hard and fast laws in place? Should there be? Should we be able to "tattle" to Groundspeak on a fellow cacher for hoarding items or not playing by our well-known rules? Should a player be banned from caching? Or at least the website? Or is there a polite way to simply tell someone that they're not playing fairly?

I'm about to email a cacher who has really irritated me, yet I wanted a few opinions first. Team Smoke had picked up a Red Jeep TB that I dropped off at the start of this years contest and had never dropped it off anywhere. I have since noticed that this cacher hoards NOT 1, BUT 2 of every year’s Jeep TBs without dropping them off. This cacher is like quicksand for jeeps...they go in but never come out. How should I approach this email without seeming too threatening? (Although I'd like to, as this kind of practice may discontinue Jeep from participating next year or years thereafter.) Is it even my place to say anything, as some view this game as their own and a cacher would referee him/herself, unlike team sports or true contests.

Thanks for any advice as this really razzes me!!!

    I hear you.... thanks

Sorry for the repetitive style of mine -just getting used to loving the forum. Great ideas an knowledge aquisition. Thanks to all.

    Don't do it.

  19. I've got three TBs out there that are 20mm shell casings shot from an F-15E in combat in Iraq (back in November 2004).

I'm interested to see where they travel to.

CONGRATS- VISITING N.C. IN OCTOBER SURE HOPE TO FIND ONE. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO (DID?)

Thanks. Hope you find one of them. Currently there are 4 of them as TBs traveling around. I think atleast one of them has made it out of state (Ohio, I think). I think the other 3 are still in NC. I've released several others as swag and have no idea what's happened to them (other than some good logs that they've been found).

I know it's not a fancy geocoin, but I would think these would fall into the "very hard to find" category for collectors, I just hope some of them keep moving.

Can You tell us approx. where in N.C. - Would really like to try for one of them.
