  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see the same problem with this case as I do with the lanyard that comes with the 76 and the 76S. Looking at the picture. the backback/belt HOOK and the Garmin lanyard both attach to the bottom of the receiver. So if you let it hang from the lanyard or the hook provided on the case, it is upside-down. The WORST possible position for good reception sine your antenna would then be positioned to listen to the ground. And the last time I checked, Planet Earth does a fairly poor job of reflecting satellite signals... Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot!
  4. Can you guess who goes with us? Look to the left and there you'll see Ruby. We also have a new puppy, Sophie, who went on her first cache at 13 weeks. She was quite excited. However, we had just had 6 inches of snow the night before and it was around 20 degrees out. Luckily I had one of my sons along with me that day. We took turns stuffing Sophie inside our coats while the other tried to keep up with Ruby. My next trick will be to train Ruby and her Beagle nose to sniff out Tupperware and Ammo boxes! 5. As far as I'm concerned, Mapsource is only good for giving your GPSr something "better" than the basemap. They use very old source data in all of the products. For checking out street addresses and points of interest, I use Delorme Sreets 2003. There is very little they get wrong. You can upload/download waypoints, track and routes from just about any GPSr. And the best part is that the Delorme product is less than $50.00 and most retail outlets. I know that you can use 3rd party products to create your own maps and download them to the Garmin units. But I await the day that a MAJOR off the shelf type program takes the time to break that code and have the ability to dump into them. 6. Not only is the locally running version cool, but the added features are awesome! Makes me want to run out now and go caching! Thanks for all the work you've done. Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot!

  8. I'm hoping that I'll be able to release my first TB, Cachewww Chicken, in the near future. Followed by a relase of my second one, Colonel Sanders, as soon as Cachewww makes his way to another cache. Cachewww Colonel Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot!
  9. I don't know if this would apply to the older Luminas, but our 98 Chevy Venture had the radio antenna built into the windshield. Look at one the next time you see one, you will not find an external FM antenna. Maybe this "in the windshield" design is what causes some problems. This would apply to Chevy Ventures, Pontiac Montanas and Oldsmobile Silhouettes. Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot!

Is there some reason why they can;t list them all the way to GCZZZZ? And, do we know what the new scheme will be? OH Boy! are you asking for it. Now you're going to get a Hexidecimal math lesson or two. I have quite a bit of code running in our office that uses base-32 numbers to keep track of a large amount of files that date back to the world of DOS and 8 character filenames. Piece of cake once you've got the converters correctly coded. The only problem we have with it as you can sometimes get some interesting 4-letters words as part of the filenames! Try explaining that to an angry customer! Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot!
  11. quote:Originally posted by Markwell: Kinda messes up the schema. Sounds like Gebuddy doesn't follow the definitions of a .csv file. Fields that contain a comma, should be enclosed by double quotes '"'. It is a fairly common mistake made by many programs that claim to read .csv files for importing or exporting purposes. 12. I find Dan's information misleading. When I search for caches that I have found, it shows that I have found caches in states that I have not! I have emailed Dan and am awaiting a response. I thought maybe my user name might have been used long ago in the past, but a search on geocaching.com only shows the caches that I know I have found. It doesn't list the ones in other states that Dan's site lists. Weird... Just got word from Dan. His site used my user name as a wildcard for searching purposes! That's what I get for not being original... Beagle As soon as you idiot proof something, they go and make a better idiot! [This message was edited by Beagle on March 03, 2003 at 08:13 AM.]
  13. I too have the 76S. When I saw that there were setting to change from fahrenheit to celsius, I got curious. There is NOTHING in the manual which explains where you might be able to display temp. I started emailing Garmin and got a response that indicated that it is just as indicated above, external equipment passing a data sentence to the unit. The "secret" screen for the 76S will show a temperature, but it only reads in celsuis and is the temperature of the internal oscilator. The software uses a mapped database in memory to determine what the exact frequency output is of the oscilator since that can vary greatly as a function of temperature. It needs to know exactly what time it is for decoding the data string that is coming from each bird in the sky. Beagle

  15. Hey people. It seems that everytime I go out looking for a cache, I think of something else I would like to have with me. Shy of loading up a backpack with all my worldly posessions, I starting a mental list of those things I would need most and wondered what everyone else takes with them. I realize that this might be an old topic, but since the things you carry might have changed, I thought it might be a good question to ask... Beagle
  16. Be sure that if your GPSr has a setting for NiMH's that you use it or you may not be getting the most out of them. NiMH's run at 1.2 volts. When they begin to fall off from that, it is much more gradual than an alkaline. While an alkaline starts at 1.5, it falls off from that pretty quickly. The alkaline hits a voltage level at which your unit complains of "Low Battery" and then if left, will soon power off as the battery voltage falls to an unacceptable level. The NiMH is able to hold at those lower levels longer than the alkaline. I read all about this somewhere on the web. If need be I can find the links. And as far as I know, the NiMH's don't have any problems with a memory like the nicads do. I have 2 different chargers for my NiMH's. One is a slow charger which can take up to 10 hours to do the charge and the other is a quick charger which charges them in 1 hour or less. They do heat up with the quick charger but that is only a function of how much current is flowing through them. Both chargers shut off when the battery is full. It is very important that you only charge a NiMH with a charger that is intelligent to know it has NiMH's in it. Otherwise you could damage the batteries. For what it's worth, Best Buy sells a 4 pack of Energizer 1850's with a slow charger for $19.95. The same batteries with a quick charger are $29.95.
  17. Could it have just been something going on with satellite signals in whole? I came home around 6:30 PM CST and turned on the T.V. hooked up to DirecTV. I had MANY instances of what appeared to be a lost signal. Similar to when there is torrential downpour happing during a storm. I pulled up the setup menu and checked the signal strength and everything there was A-OK. I then wen upstairs to check the second receiver and it was acting the exact same way. I figured that since my receive signals looked fine, that maybe DirecTV was having a problem with the uplink. Right around 7:00 PM, everything settled down and I didn't have any picture problems the rest of the evening. That's a good thing because I had been waiting to watch the Bud Shootout for days.... Maybe there was a magnetic disturbance from a solar flare-up?
  18. I don't know if anyone else saw this. Last week on "Animal Cops", they took in a dog that was entirely infested with ticks. The dog was VERY anemic and almost dead from how much the ticks were sucking from him. They showed ticks on ticks. It was disgusting. They were beginning the process of removing them one by one with tweezers. I had to leave so I didn't see the ending but they thought that with a transfusion and a lot of manual work, the dog would be O.K.!
