  1. You can do it quickly today assuming you have Excel or a similar program. In GSAK, set the filter to only show Found caches. Click on File / Print and select Grid View. Click the Preview button. In the HTML page that is then displayed, highlight all the data except the title and right click / copy. Launch Excel and right click / paste. Then delete all the columns other then Terrain / Difficuly. Scroll to the bottom and in the row at the end enter in =AVERAGE(A1:Axxx) and =AVERAGE(B1:Bxxx) as the formulas and it should show the average. You can also see the number of each caches, etc. Here's what I quickly show which I think is lower then I would expect, but it's likely more due to hitting 1-2 value caches with my 2 daughters. Average Difficulty: 1.83 Average Terrain: 2.02 Throwing together a quick Pivot Table on that same data: Number of Caches by Difficulty: 1.0: 111 1.5: 104 2.0: 153 2.5: 72 3.0: 38 3.5: 3 4.0: 6 4.5: 1 5.0: 0 Number of Caches by Terrain: 1.0: 107 1.5: 111 2.0: 88 2.5: 65 3.0: 65 3.5: 22 4.0: 18 4.5: 1 5.0: 1 David Problem with this is - people tend to over-rate their caches for terrain. Steeps Over Greenbrook is like a 4 or 4.5 star terrain cache. Pleaaaaaase. Maybe I've spent too much time out hiking and enjoy the walk too much, but while I've found (or not found) some very DIFFICULT caches, very few have been very challenging terrain-wise from my perspective. It's really subjective though as every individual's different - but I think terrain tends to get overrated in general. (considering there are caches that are overnight hikes in the tetons that are only 3's & 4's for terrain). Just one man's opinion. Of course, ask me in 40 years, or if I put on 200lbs and my perspecitve might change.
  2. Just a heads up - I'm not logging online anymore but by my calculations (hmmm, let me see...carry the two...divide by 16...square root of -1....got it!) I've found 18,234.3 caches so far (the .3 cache calculation may be a rounding error). I look at geocaching more like fishing or hiking. Doesn't matter if I catch 5 or 7 fishes, or cover 12 or 20 miles, it's a great day outdoors. OF course, your mileage may vary - and the beauty is, it's really up to the individual what's important to them. Some people spend all day counting their money, others might spend all day counting their "finds", others might count their blessings. I'm a VERY competitive person - but never found geocaching a competitive sport. Everyone's different. So numbers don't matter to me at least...... unless of course they do.
  3. I thought this was what the NJ Geocaching Club looked like? Of course, those clubs come in various sizes... Oh....you meant NJ Geocaching Associations???? Nevermind..... good luck on drawing the map boundries! Can we trade BrianSnat to south Jersey???
  4. I stopped there today with the kids on the way back from our overnight campout on the USS Ling. The falls are, alas, running again (albiet a little slower than usual). It's a cool spot - but be sure to lock your car!!! BTW - they turned on the sun again this afternoon.
  5. What???!!!?!?!?!?! They only turn off the falls when those funky Canadians complain about the noise from the incessantly dripping water. Aside from one stint where the Army Corps of Engineers did some work on Bridal Veil Falls (and some severe ice dam problems) - I don't think Niagara falls ever goes dry. Besides, you know if it were possible, someone would stash a cache under that dadgum thing if they shut the water off (giving you any ideas for Paterson Brian?)
  6. I know this has probably been posted in the "big" forums (but who reads those anyway).... If you haven't already - check out google maps (maps.google.com) and when you're looking at the street map - look to the upper right and click on "Satellite". Forget those old grainy terraserver images - these are sweet, and the scrolling built into google maps is really nice. First a great search engine, then gmail, then picassa, and now satellite maps. They just continue to amaze me with what they come up with. p.s. When you see the clarity of these free publicly available maps, just imagine for a second how close-up and clear the classified government images must be.
  7. Congratulations! I especially enjoyed your Jimmies cache!!!!!
  8. That many caches on Long Island.....sheesh. I lwas out there last weekend and managed to drive 110mph on the LIE service road. Didn't find any caches though (but those Maserati Spyders are awfully quick!). You gotta love L.I.! You guys musta hiked like a thousand feet vertical total finding all those caches Seriously - congrats!
  9. A little over 9 miles west of Albany (figured I'd save anyone else the bother of looking up the coordinates to see if it was near their area).
  10. It seemed like just yesterday you were at 346! Wise man say: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a bannana.
  11. You know how to tell a grizzly bear from a black bear, right? When you see it....run like hell and climb a tree. If the bear climbs up after you and kills you - it's a black bear. If the bear knocks down the tree and kills you - it's a grizzly bear. Sounds simple enough, right? In all seriousness, I've run into probably a couple dozen bear while out backpacking or camping (even a couple times playing golf in Sussex county). Once my 5 yr. old was with me and we just stood still while the bear walked 10 feet away from us (of course while people in the campground around us ran around screaming). You realize very quickly that unless the bear feels threatened (or feels its cubs are threatened) or it think's you're food (or thinks you're carrying food) - it has as much interest in you as you probably do walking by a bunch of squirrels. Just don't feed 'em - and don't surprise 'em - and you'll be fine.
  12. "Rino Rino Rino Rino"... I've been happy with mine, but it's the only GPS I've ever owned...so I have no basis for comparison. It's really cool if you have a couple of 'em so you can share locations (they even allow transmission on GMRS now). As others have said, watch that the thingie (techie term) in back doesn't unscrew - but I've put a foam washer there and it keeps it tight. Another suggestion (already made) was to use some Loctite.... (available in autoparts stores) that'll keep it from working lose accidently but still allow you to remove it if you'd like to in the future (get the blue or purple stuff.... it's not so strong). Good luck!
  13. Congrats KBer! I hadn't even noticed this cache pop up in my old stomping grounds. Time to get out on the motorcycle and find a few! Nice job to a great cacher, a great hider, and a generally nice guy!
  14. I'm in - either place. I had a blast at last years event (although I recall the pub had problems with their taps...and NO GUINESS!). Whoever plans this just needs to pick an alternate pub in case of a reoccurance!
  15. One problem - who the heck wants to brave the Cross Bronx expressway to go to Lawn Island? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease. Besides, Peconic Bay Sailors can stash a TB on one of those ocean caches - where nobody can get it. I think they'd make a great flag warden!
  16. You might want to checkout beginnerbikes.org Here's a thread on geocaching and motorcycles (although it kind of violates the leave no trace ethic): BeginnerBikes geocaching thread It's a good website for new and advanced bikers alike. And yes, I do some of my geocaching by bike! (Honda ACE).
  17. I do just 'greated' events... besides I had a bad experience with a rope once... Althought a rope course event could be cool. Event: Idiots (Dave's) Guide to GPS units... I've got plenty of climbing gear I could lend. Ropes, biners, the works.... p.s. I'm near Morristown NJ and would be happy to help if you're nearby.
  18. dadgum. I looked quick and thought it was a photoshop job. I showed my wife what I was laughing so hard at and she quickly said "That's NOT you". She correctly pointed out that that bride's wearing a dress that's not my size and I'd never go for such a frilly veil. Besides, Brian had no problem lifting me - and that bride in the picture looks north of 300 lbs.... and Snat's just not that strong. FYI - for any new cachers reading the forums. Alan (Natureboy) is an ex-NJ ex-cacher who unfortunately had to give up the game after an unfortunate accident involving canoe paddles, several ammo cans, and powerline towers. Seriously - thanks for the great laugh! Guess I gotta visit Texas!
  19. I spit my drink out laughing!!!!! dadgum - you're good at photoshop (either that or I had too much of that english ale the last Avroair geo-event!). I looked at it for a while and can't figure out how you did it ('cause it's not just a simple cut and paste of faces). I guess you need something to do on those long trans-atlantic flights!!! Great job Alan - gave me a hell of a chuckle! Can you do something similar with me and Elle Macpherson - maybe lifesize?
  20. Big deal. I'm with Brian. Most of these caches I spotted from my car before I even finished parking and didn't even bother to fetch and sign the log book. How cute that you actually log online.....bah! (sorry, was channeling someone from the dark side!) Seriously - congrats to a great cacher, great hider, and nice guy! (not to mention one of the best caching teams around!). Looking forward to the next time our paths cross!
  21. Congratulations Ron!!! Another milestone and another 100K miles on the car! Looking forward to another steak night when you're out this way again....
  22. Hehehehe. Neat idea for the cache. I think I know just where this might be!
  23. Sounds terrific. I'll look over Nick's shoulder and copy his work.....
  24. I've got the 120 (but would love to upgrade to the 130 in the future). I have no problem using topo's on it. The click stick gives you good zoom capability - it's not the largest display in the world, but I use Topo on it while hiking, and Metroguide on it while on the motorcycle - and I'm a big fan of the Rino. I haven't encountered any problem whatsoever with Topo on Rino. Good luck!
