  1. Just double check that the map datum setting in the unit is correct. You'll find it under Menu > Setup > Units. The map datum option should be set to WGS 84 if it isn't already. Consistent errors of that sort of magnitude are usually down to having the wrong map datum selected. Note the use of the word "consistent" though - you or the GPSr may have just been having an off day. I'd go and try to find a nice easy cache before you get too disheartened! Good luck weedboer - which unit do you use that you recalibrate each time you change batteries? I've never felt the need to recalibrate my 76CSx (same innards as the 60CSx in a different shell) to improve its accuracy - it's almost always spot on.
  2. I've been very pleased with my DuraSec HighTec screen protector.
  3. Can you purchase annual subscriptions in advance?
  4. Or so I thought! Can anyone help me understand how or why Interception Bug 2 is currently 'in' a micro (GC10VQD)? Thanks!
  5. Thanks for bringing this cache to my attention. It's now on my to do list - fortunately one of the TBs is close by! Was there any reason that the final co-ords were given as an image rather than text?
  6. As long as you're navigating "Off Road", the PAGE button should take you from the map screen to the compass screen showing the Found, Note and Stop buttons.
  7. Actually I've leftout a step above - I'm confusing myself here! The conversion is not to blame; I stripped the elevation data from the GPX file, as Google Earth had recorded the elevation as zero at every points on the path (despite the Terrain database layer being on and terrain data was present), which GPS Visualizer had duly converted. I removed it as I hoped that MapSource would kindly fill in the blanks for me with information from my (expensive!) topo maps. Too much to hope for possibly! So I'm still looking for a solution...
  8. Thanks for that Grasscatcher, but the track I'm having trouble with wasn't created by the GPSr (it started as a path in Google Earth, converted to a track in GPX format using GPS Visualizer). The result is that every track point only contains position data (longitude and latitude), and the only columns I see under Track Properties are Index, Leg Length, Leg Course and Position. It seems I can, but only using MapSource - so if I use its track draw tool I end up with a track with longitude, latitude and elevation data (and hence the additional Altitude column in Track Properties). That's what I would have thought, but it doesn't seem to be the case - I can view my created track's profile on the handheld, but not in MapSource. The handheld seems to grab the elevation data on-the-fly, but MapSource won't. I was hoping that within MapSource there would be a way to see the profile in a similar way that the handheld generates it, and maybe therefore to grab the elevation data to complete that missing from my track. I suppose I thought that I wouldn't be the first person to want to do this, and there would already be a solution! Any more ideas? All suggestions gratefully received!
  9. If you give me rough co-ordinates of where you're interested in, I can post some screenshots from my 76CSx's Americas basemap, if you think that would be of use. I can tell you from a quick look that it's more than a little bare! I would say yes, especially if you're planning on being "on the trail." You're purchasing a mapping handheld - without maps, you'd probably be as well served by a much cheaper model. I couldn't tell you which maps are the best for your area, but you can see the maps' content online via Garmin's MapSource Map Viewer, which should help. I'd imagine Topo Canada would be worth a look.
  10. CenTexDodger, thanks for the advice about upgrading (which I've done) and the explanation about tracks. I had noticed that a saved track keeps only position data, whereas both active and archived tracks retain elevation info, which is a bit strange. Not sure what the theory is behind that - if anyone can enlighten me please do so! However, the track that I'm referring to in my original post was created outside MapSource and I wanted to add (or at least see) the elevation data, as my GPSr seems to be able to do (although not permanently!). I'd still welcome advice about this issue if anyone has any for me!
  11. Just a small comment. ... On the new "x" series GPS Garmin do use a compass that do draw very little current, and therefore 60CSx and 60Cx have both 18h battery time listed at Garmin.com Is this really true? Where did you get your information? Do Garmin specify battery life with/without use of the electronic compass? I couldn't find anything on their site. The only reference I can find is in the manual which states, "Extensive use of ... electronic compass significantly reduce battery life." Personally I have experienced a noticeable increase in battery life when leaving the electronic compass off (only switching if I need a bearing when stationary).
  12. I don't agree with this at all. "Waypoints are locations or landmarks you record and store in your GPS. They are locations you might want to return to later." (p. 10) "The Tracks feature creates an electronic bread crumb trail or "track log" on the Map Page as you travel. The track log contains information about points along its path." (p. 26) "Route navigation allows you to create a sequence of intermediate waypoints that lead you to your final destination." (p. 32) ... how to read? "Use the Proximity Waypoints Page to define an alarm circle around a stored waypoint location" (p. 15). Hmmm... can I interest you in a ?
  13. I do agree with the OP that the UI is really lacking, especially with the market's enlightenment that tech products ought to facilitate instinctive operation. Here though, you need to have patience and actually learn how to do things that should be intuitive. The geocache page in particular is pretty poor, especially considering how popular the use of Garmin's GPSRs are in geocaching. This 'feature' just feels like a hacked version of the waypoint page, done only as something of an afterthought. And I agree that entry of data via the rocker is woefully inefficient. The manual however, I found to be quite thorough. Some points and concepts could be expanded and explained more clearly but on the whole it is good, as manuals go.
  14. I have a track in MapSource with no elevation data, and I'd like to complete the track info with that, if possible. It seems I can do this in my GPSr unit ( Tracks > Select track > MENU > Profile > Use Map Data) to view the profile, but when I try to view the track's profile in MapSource, I get no similar option. I'd at least like to see the profile using map data, and preferably complete the track data by grabbing the elevation for each track point. Surely if it's possible on the handheld I should be able to do it in Mapsource too (you'd hope). But I can't see how. Help is a bit vague: MapSource is version 6.12.2, maps are Topo GB v2. Can anyone help? TIA
  15. Anyone feeling brave? Perhaps Garmin CS would know.
  16. Does this still hold true even though the changes in the new firmware includes support of "version 2" SD cards?
  17. Can I ask how you downloaded maps to the card without using your GPSr? Is there an FAQ for this somewhere? TIA
