  1. I've recently had to repair the usb connector on my Ipaq and found this company to be very good. http:www.ipaqrepair.co.uk
  2. I rarely post but i would like to say that I have a cache on an SSSI and a SAM both have been placed with the knowledge and permission of the relevant authorities. They have been set with the aim to take people to these places which are not necesarily visited but have been placed so as not to damage the protected areas. Yes it took a bit longer to get the caches published due to the necessary permissions needed, a few emails, phone calls and the offer of a site visit did the trick, but it was worth waiting for. The reviewers are there for a reason and the job they do is to protect the general caching community from adverse publicity by placing caches in areas that protected. I have always found them to be approachable and ready to help if you have a query over the placement of a cache in a certain area. They are volunteers and give their time freely to enable us all to enjoy the caching pastime, without them we wouldn't be able to do it. So work with the volunteer reviewers and the whole caching community benefits.
  3. Brilliant will browse through that.
  4. Hi, After many faithfull years service i am looking at upgrading our etrex. I am considering upgrading to a pda style so that i can eventually go paperless caching and make the most of a premium membership account. Those that all ready use this method I would really appreciate some input as to the pros and cons of your device when using them for caching so that i don't make an expensive mistake. DR. Ape
  5. For our groups Expedition Challenge badge we sent them off with an etrex, for emergencies only, set up for British grid reference so that if they got lost they could use the GPS to work out where they were on the map and so get back on track. They have also been out caching with us and have loved it. We use the GPS to enhance map reading rather than totally replace it.
  6. Any Caching scouters going to Bisley, weekend of 17th -19th october, as we have a TB we need to hand over at the event.
  7. I consider myself a newbie to the sport, 18 months. Even as a newbie I sometimes get fed up with a micro, sometimes I get fed up with the location but then that is my point of view and my personnal choice. Even "Off yer trolley" series have their good points, we often use them to break a long journey for the kids. When researching caches in an area you are going to visit if you take the trouble to read a the logs you can get a good idea of wether you will enjoy hunting for that cache or not. The only problem I see is that with the vast number of caches being published it makes it harder to find the good ones, but if you are prepared to look for them you will find them. We use a "good" cache as a starting point for a day out and normally end up doing the others around it as "we are in the area" and unlikely to return. We have placed 4 caches out, each is different to the others, all have what I consider a good justification for having been placed, we also seem to get nice logs being posted. So "Newbies" can also place good caches and everyone can pick and choose which caches they want to do. But a least there is a CHOICE. It's up to every cacher how they play the game.
  8. Our troop actually managed a couple of caches in Holland whilst camping over there. They enjoyed the adventure.
  9. You might find this scout fact sheet usefull it was written by a very experienced cacher, not me I hasten to add. GPS Navigation Factsheet
  10. Regarding the coins, I can see both sides of the argument as they are nice coins, but I am releasing them as intended by Garmin - I would look at it as a contract between them giving them away and us receiving them. Yes it did take some effort to pick them up but that was my choice. Re coins that go MIA - It's a shame that people feel the need to take something that doesn't belong to them and store it in a collection that for obvious reasons cannot be shown to anyone else - obviously they are not proud of 'their coin collection'! Yes they might end up in the hands of an e-bayer or a collector but if they stay in my hands only a handfull of people will get to see them. I wish them luck in their travels and I hope they travel far and wide and bring joy to people who see them.
  11. Millets have a sale on a metal tube container about 1 inch long but only half inch wide, various colours but only £1.50 each.
  12. The clue would have to be "Leave no stone unturned" in the majority of cases. How would you do it if you decided to be floated in space - a virtual ?
  13. It's the British T-breaks which means it takes so long. Now to put the kettle on
  14. Just a side note, When did the G.O.G turn into a cute cuddly teddy bear?
  15. We have had active discussions on this matter with our local parish vicar and he is keen to have a cache placed in his churchyard due to some interesting facts regarding the church's history. He is not after the collection plate donations as the actual church is often locked nowdays. We have discussed an area and have only to have the cache container passed and the actual page contents agreed, we have held back to give Deci a break, and then it will be published. We don't even go to the church in question - so it can be done with the blessing of the vicar - it is worth the effort.
  16. Our scout group is off to the international campsite at Baarn in Holland this summer and we are aiming to try and do a few local caches, unfortuantely geobswescout's caches are a bit far from us, but the idea is good. When less busy will have to see if we can sort something similar out over here ideally if we can start near a Scout/Guide camp site.
  17. This is a never ending argument so here is my tuppence:- I dislike seeing dog poo left lying around, either in or out of bags I dislike having cigarette smoke "puffed" in my face I dislike chewing gum being dropped on the floor and I dislike rubbish being dropped but the worst thing is I dislike the people who are inconsiderate enough to do these things with no concern for anyone else. End of rant
  18. Although a noob who occasionally posts, I do understand that internal politics from on high have made your continuing duty to the Geocachers of the UK untenable. I would like to thankyou for all the effort you have both put into this hobby and I hope that you are able to continue your enjoyment without the recent hassels.
  19. Fact sheet printing as I type. We have a St Georges Day Archery Competition tonight for our Explorer Unit, so 4 of our Explorer and Scout Leaders are holding an impromptu meeting afterwards to discuss Summer Camp and Geocaching as an evening activity.
  20. Hi, On the East Anglian Cachers Forum we are having a race from New Zealand back to the UK. We have set out a set of rules which seem to work I have included the link to the race web page for you to look at. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/toadfer/
  21. Congratulations on this thread, it makes me feel normal . I enjoy reading about a good moan. LOL
  22. Last summer we did a "cache & dash" that took over an hour due to a fisherman standing by and parking his bike right over the cache. Not deterred we engaged in conversation and after a little while as the sun was setting we decided that taking a photo of the moorhen on the water was a good idea, so after failing to get the right shot in various position the only place that gave a great shot was down by the wheels! Needlesss to say we managed to get the cache which was then stealthily passed to the other person whilst the photographer talked to the fisherman. Using the pretext of a phonecall I moved away from the cache site and filled in the log, then on the pretext of handing the phone over to the other half and retireving the camera to carry on taking photo's the cache was replaced. We carried on talking to the fisherman before finally bidding him fairwell and walked away laughing quietly as we had found, signed the log and replaced it all within 2ft of the fisherman and behind his bike's front wheel!
  23. We started off with the basic map reading skills and then when they got a bit "bored" of the traditional method we went onto GPS used in conjunction with their map reading skills. As we use the basic E-trex they still need to read a map to find the footpaths etc, it has given them an incentive to improve their map skills! We have also placed out dummy caches with treats in them and they loved it. Gps and map reading work well together and how many Scout Leaders have car navigation systems rather than a road map? Good luck
  24. The Navigator Badge has a whole section on Geocaching - I think off the top of my head it's section D. Our Troop have had a few goes and are hoping to put out a cache nearby later on. Kenninghall Scouts have also placed a cache:- GCHY6J Hemp Meadow Woods Good Luck
