  1. I completely agree. I use the page to see if new caches have been hidden in the area because I'm too impatient to wait for the weekly email notification It is aggrivating to see that someone has had caches approved before they were even placed. This could also be misleading for cachers that miss the portion of the cache description that says it isn't there yet.
  2. Thanks for the explaination. I'm new to the forums and hadn't read anything about these scripts yet. -gwendy

The Line my $x = `w3m -dump "$l"`; # Or use lynx -dump causes the system the script runs on to fire up a text based browser which connects to http://www.geocaching.com and get the details the loc file is missing. How is that different from the amount of bandwidth that is being used by someone else who opens the cache page in a browser to print it out? Wouldn't they actually be using less bandwidth than someone who opens the page in a browser that loads all of the graphics? (sorry if I'm being thick here).

Sure, part of that is the number of users who've come out of hibernation with the advent of warm weather, but we've been told repeatedly that the vast majority of the hits on the site come from scripts like yours. Unless I'm missing something here.. DrBacchus' script isn't one of those malicious scripts that you're referring to. He downloads the .loc file (just like anyone) and then runs the script on the file to parse through it and put it into a format that makes it more readable for him. I don't see how this would be different from opening each cache in his .loc file in a browser and printing them out.

  6. We would also definitely send an entry!
