  1. I like to use Google Earth imagery for custom maps . However , my Garmin 62s lacks clarity when zoomed in . Will a gps with higher resolution like a Garmin Montana provide a better picture at high zoom ?
  2. Is satellite imagery clearer on a Montana than on a 62s ?
  3. I just completed a map to use for hunting. I use a GE image that I imported to Gimp where I enhanced it. It looked to be too large to work for a custom map (1280 x 1190 pixels) so I used Image Splitter to divide it into two Jpeg image files - ELK TOP and ELK BOTTOM . I then "orientated" them on GE and saved them as 2 separate KMZ files.I set draw orders at 56 & 57.I placed them on a micro sd card this way : Garmin/CustomMaps/ELK TOP,ELK BOTTOM . I placed it in my Garmin 62s and went to Map Selection to enable them . I was surprised to see they were shown as 1 map with both names . They show up together as I wanted so that works for me . I thought they would have to be enabled as separate maps. Has anyone else had this happen or should I have saved or made them differently?
  4. Can Custom maps be stored like this on an SD card for use in my 62s? Can 2 or more maps be placed on one card like this and activated individually ?My link[/url] My link
  5. I have made several custom maps using Google Earth imagery highlighted in Gimp or Photoshop . I have used areas zoomed in close or large areas zoomed further out (2 mile by 2 mile square), however I cannot seem to get them to be of high resolution when zoomed right in. Is there a way to improve the maps resolution ?
  6. Can I place more than (1) Custom map on a micro sd card ? If so how do I name them ?
  7. I plan to make a custom map for my 62s.I am going to use Google Earth imagery enhanced for color and brightness on Gimp. I plan to combine 2 jpegs in order to produce a large forested hunting map .The total size should be about 1.5 MB in KMZ format when it is complete. Will this work OK on my GPS ?
  8. I use my GPS for hunting in the forest. So far I have used to the Garmin map to do this , but would like more detail. Does satellite imagery work well for this or is it "too busy" ? I can only zoom down so far on Google Earth in Canada when I make a Custom map for my 62s. Any opinions. Hoytvtecmach
  9. I am making a Custom Map on Google Earth for a Garmin 62S. The actual size is 6.5 miles by 9.5 miles = 62 sq. miles. The JPEG/ KMZ file size is 123 KB . Is this too big for a Garmin Custom Map ? I have lots of room on the SD card.
  10. In "Map Information" on my 62s it shows 3 maps Enabled : Worldwide DEM Basemap , Garmin Topo Map , and Digital Globe Demo.jnx . What is the "Digital Globe" and should it stay enabled ?
  11. I disabled the Custom map and then enabled the Garmin topo map , however , the Garmin topo would show it was "Disabled" and would not display again . Eventually I went to Mapinstall and removed the Garmin map and reinstalled it again. Now it works OK so I removed the Custom map from the Micro sd card and put the empty card back in the unit. I read the link you posted and will put in a draw order and adjust the transparency .
  12. I made a Custom map in KMZ format on Google Earth . I installed it on a micro sd card and placed it in a Custom Maps file inside a Garmin folder . It showed up in the map area on my Garmin 62s and it displayed with no problem other than it was very dark . The problem came when I switched back to the Garmin Topo map in internal storage of the device and it would not display . What is the problem ??
  13. If the JPG was not a progressive JPG, and if you save the KMZ file in the \Garmin\CustomMaps\ directory on your 62s, yes. More info here. Thanks for the quick replies .
  14. Using Google Earth I saved the image of my hunting area . I then made an "Image Overlay" of the area and saved it as a KMZ file. I imported it to Basecamp where it can be saved in the "My Collection" files and viewed as a Custom Map . My question is : Can I load this on my Garmin 62s and will it display the satellite imagery with no problem ? Hoytvtecmach
  15. Is Lowrance ever going to make Canadian topo maps for the Endura Series
  16. Some software updates have a Note :Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk. Is this a concern or is it usually OK to install the update ?
  17. I believe Mapsource works with the 62s , I loaded maps on 62s with Mapsource. Hoytvtecmach
  18. I noticed on the Lowrance website they show a Cartography Kit that's available . I am not sure what this means but I hope it means we might finally get some Canadian mapping for the Lowrance Endura series . Can someone shed some light on this ? Hoytvtecmach
  19. Do the topographic maps have much detail when zoomed in to 5 miles or less ? I cannot seem to find any screen shots anywhere .
  20. I tried to install Canada Topo V4 onto my computer but it is to big to fit on my C: drive and they do not give you a choice to install on a different drive . How do I install it directly onto another (D:) drive ? hoytvtecmach
  21. Thanks for the suggestions . I searched other forums and was told the Garmin website has not updated the requirements for the new Topo Canada V4 . It still shows info for the older V2 . Hoytvtecmach
  22. I bought a copy of Topo Canada V4 . According to the Garmin website this software requires 2GB of disc space . When I tried to install it on my computer it stated it could not load because it needed at least 5GB of disc space . I could not even load in on another drive because there was no way to select it . I returned it to the store . Help anyone !!!
  23. I updated an older version of Canada V2 with the Garmin Website. Can I load these maps onto a 62s ?
  24. To estimate distance with Lat/Lon is almost impossible .I always use UTM . It is metric with the numbers meaning this. Easting is shown in meters east of the center of a zone , 60 zones with 6 degrees each for a total 360 degrees . I am in Saskatchewan which puts me in Zone 13 . The zones begin at Grenich England . Northing is north of the Equator in meters. -Northing is south of the Equator. Google UTM and you will get pictures with simple explanations. Hoytvtecmach
