  1. As a college student, I often have to go to class right after new caches are published. When a new cache comes out, I like to send an email to the cachers nearby and politley ask them to hold off so I can get it first after class. I always make sure to say please and thank you, but I was never good at the whole sharing thing... Next semester, I made sure to schedule my classes around my reviewers publishing times...
  2. I have to say that I agree with the OP. Though I don't use notifications extensively, It is annoying to have to make all of those adjustments to several notifications separately. Why not set the notification screen up like the PQs are set up, just more simplified. That way you can check a box for the center to be at one's home coords and get new caches that are X miles from that or maybe any new caches near a cache area that I am going to later that day. Then I could also reduce clutter on the notification list and ask for two or three different types in one intead of two or three. Some may argue that it is more effort than it is worth, but that could be from people who already have notifications set up and dont need to worry about them. Why make a deal about premium members not seeing advertisements? Its little things that really don't matter, but the little bit of convenience certainly is nice to have.
  3. I'm probably not alone in this, but when I'm riding in the car with friends, I now notice and point out every park that has a cache and where it is and what kind of hide it was whenever I drive by it. I've even given directions based on where a cache is that I found with the person (usually a tagalong cacher).
  4. This type of thread is what makes me tolerate Minnesota and its April blizzards
  5. I should have clarified. The owner has since removed the need for a blacklight and supplied the necessary cipher information. There is nothing in my original post that isnt on the cache page now.
  6. The Holy Grail --- My brother and I (both in college) actually spent a day not fighting and figuring this one out. When It was published, we had to go to stage 1 and pick up a card with a pigpen cipher encrypted on the front. Decrypting that gave us a message: "You didnt think it would be this easy did you?" We eventually figured out that we needed to use a blacklight to see some writing on the back. Which was another cipher. Once we solved it, my dad came home, the three of us left and, after doing no work on the puzzle, my dad scores the find. We spent the entire day doing this and ended with a FTF. Forgotten Field in Duluth, MN was a great multi high up on a hill overlooking Lake Superior. For this one, the location was the ticket...an abandoned park that was still there. The baseball field had grass 5 feet high and there was a 3 foot diameter tree growing out of the middle of the basketball court.
  7. There is nothing wrong with a little pocket knife collection. As for trading, would you really need to trade for something that explicitly violates the guidelines?
  8. Hi! If you don't know how to change a tube, ask your bike shop employees to walk you through it. It's a piece of cake! Pardon me for butting in if you already know how. I hope you get back on the trail soon. I was so motivated today that I got to the bike shop about noon (I felt really stupid walking my bike) and had a new tube put in by 1. And you know what that means??? Thats right, I got out caching. I never had to change a bike tube before, but my dad was more than willing to help. However he had limited time and I needed my bike fixed so I could bike to the zoo tomorrow. w00t
  9. Pompeii, Italy. It was a virtual cache that I did while studying abroad. I had to break away from the group and hussle to get it in a ten minute window. It is 5015.8mi from my home coordinates
  10. I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed, but here it goes. I'm a college student with no car, so I do most of my caching on my bike. I was getting ready to leave early this morning to clear out some DNF's in downtown St. Paul and pick up a bunch of others on the way. As I'm leaving, I find that my bike tire is flat. Instead of spending the day caching, I get to spend it going to a bike shop. Has anyone else been unexpectedly delayed to keep them from caching?
  11. For the past few weeks, the "Zoom to Adress" box on the GC Google maps hasn't been working for me. I will type in a zipcode and I get a "Loading Map" box, but nothing actually loads. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It doesnt seem like it would be a computer problem as everything else functions normally. I am running IE 7 on Windows Vista.
  12. Yep, just like Birders said, mine looks axactly the same: In 1970 local people formed a society to reclaim Swelling Hill Pond, which has been in existence since at least the mid 19th Century and had become silted up. The restored pond occupies a secluded spot on high ground and provides a tranquil habitat for it’s abundant wildlife, walkers and the Angling Society. The pond is near the school. In the spring it is very nice because all the waterlilies flower. The pond is suitable for fishing as there are carp and goldfish but you need to be a member of the Four Marks angling club to fish there. 13. It must be a computer problem. I just used my roomates computer to decrypt and it worked find.
  14. Hmmmm. I've actually had problems on several cache pages including doing it to my own (That I know has previously worked)
  15. I am experienceing trouble when trying to decode the hints online. When I click on "decrypt,"the page is refreshed and under "Additional Hints" is the exact same wording in the long description above it. I know I could do it by hand or not use hints at all, and it could be my browser (IE), but I was wondering if others are having this problem.
  16. I usually just wear normal tennis shoes. There was one time where I bushwhacked .25 miles in flip flops.
  17. If you do not have the patience to search for those older threads from the past year, then you might at least wish to take a close look at the ClayJar rating system which is available as a pop-up link when you are submitting a cache listing form. As a matter of fact, I just used the ClayJar that both you and I refered to. I set it as several mile hike in the toughest of terrains with special equipment needed and a cache in plain sight and the result: a 1 difficulty and 5 terrian.
  18. I did a PQ the other day for the 5/5 caches in the United States. I read up on a few and mentioned some to my dad and he questioned the 5/5ness of them. The reason for this is what each number signifies. My understanding is that terrain is how hard it is to get there and difficulty is the hide itself. I have seem some 5/5 caches where you rock climb to get a cache in plain sight. Using the rating system on the "new cache" listing page, this would be a 1 difficulty and 5 terrain. Is there any true 5/5's out there that are more than someone wanting to say they have a 5/5 cache? Links?
  19. 3 new caches 3 miles from my college. I don't have a car, only a bike. I depart about 4 in the afternoon. Two miles from school, it starts to rain really hard. Within minutes I am soaked, so there is no point in stopping. I couldn't keep satellites for the life of me and I DNFed all three.
  20. I've never actually held one, but they take several forms 1) Short Meet and Greet before a day of caching 2) A caching event with several temporary caches or new published caches in a park published for the event. 3) Specific events like a Super Bowl party for cachers 4) I'm sure there are many other ways to make it original too.
  21. This sounds like the "caching buddy" has effectively adopted the cache because they're doing all the work to take care of the physical cache itself. The owner of the listing owns, well, the listing. The "caching buddy" may as well own the listing as well. I think. My mistake. What I meant was far an existing owner to personally tranfer ownership to a caching buddy, not just whoever will take it.
  22. I love small town caches where I can hop on the interstate, get off at the 1,000 person towns and find a few caches. It is nice to get a taste of the small town parks. I've even had a great conversation with a business owner while looking for a cache in a small town. They all have some sort of history and are much friendlier than city folk.
  23. The Ecorangers are the midwest machines. They have 2 young kids and nearly 14,000 finds
  24. I just did a PQ for "NY" within "1000 miles" and I got the 100 oldest caches in New York. I don't know what your problem you are having, but it is definitley not a waste of time and no one is forcing you to use it. You are more than welcome to use the search by zip code and manually put coords into your GPSr and write all of the cache info into a little notebook. Try going into the "Create a Pocket Query" again. Select the little circle next to "State / Provinces" and choose "NY" then change the radius to 1000 miles submit it. Thse are the exact steps I used and i turned out ok.
  25. I do like the idea. My only concern is its limitations. Archiving caches allows for new, different caches to be placed in a similar area. It allows people who have found the old cache to come back and find a new one. I agree that there are caches that I would love to have stick around that I enjoyed and would like others to as well. There are also caches where the area could be put to good use. Im afraid that the problem may come up where great caches get archived and LPM are adopted. If a cacher wants their cache to stick around after they leave, they may just have to call a caching buddy who is still in the area to take care of it.
