  1. Man if I had only known what an innocent photo comment would turn into
  2. Well they just re-enforced it last summer (when the first container went missing). You would have thought they wouldn't have expended the money and effort if they were just going to tear it out a few months later. It wouldn't be too bad if they didn't block the road, but I suspect they will block it to keep people from just driving across the stream bed.
  3. ...being second to find on a cache that's been out for over 4 years
  4. Shazzbut! I guess there technically is an alternate route if you want to pay the ranso...., err.., access fee to use the private logging roads that parrallel the county road.
  5. A word of caution here. Consumer grade GPSrs will not provide survey grade accuracy! It might be OK to use one to get a general idea of where a property boundary goes but don't rely on the coords to determine something like if a driveway crosses a property line or to figure a building setback. Pay a few hundred dollars to a surveyor that will use a multi thousand dollar unit to stake the property lines.
  6. Well I went through the FAQ and found a comment that seemed to give the answer. However while it lead me in the right direction the numbers are not accurate due to the variable pitched characters. From trial and error I have learned there are 2 LINES for the name and 4 LINES for the comments. The number of characters that can be displayed in these lines varies on the characters used. For example a name made up entirely of colons can display around 88 of them, but a name made up entirely of "A"s can only display about 36. Now if I can just find out how to access those last 4 blank lines I will be a very happy camper!! Where the heck is all this authoritivly documented?????
  7. Ok so I want to make a POI file of all my friends houses and I want to have the address and phone numbers and stuff in the comments. The basic data source is an Excel spreadsheet of names address and phone numbers. But it didn't have coords so I used GpsVisualizer's batch geocoder to get the coords from the addresses all at once. Next I decided to use a GPX file as the POI source since that allows me to use Mapsource or Google earth to visulize all the waypoints. I mucked around with the waypoint format to get five lines of data in the comments and it works fine and shows all the comments in Mapsource. However, when I load the GPX file into my 60Cx as Points Of Interest my 60Cx only shows four comment lines total. If a line is too long it wraps and takes up another line so then only 3 data lines display. The number of character possible on one a line varies from about 18-24 since the font used is not monospaced (letters take different amounts of space). I don't know if this is a limitation of the 60Cx or if I'm doing something else wrong. The only spec I see says the comments are limited to 30 characters but mine shows at least 72 characters. WHAT GIVES??? Any suggestions?? Here is an example of my GPX wapypoint definition: <wpt lat="47.649000" lon="-122.416999"> <name>Joeseph Blowski</name> <cmt>2468 26rd W, Seattle Cell 206-123-4567 Home 206-555-9999 Birthday May 9 Wife Judy </cmt> <sym>Residence</sym> <extensions> <gpxx:WaypointExtension xmlns:gpxx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3"'>http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3 http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtens...3.xsd"> <gpxx:DisplayMode>SymbolAndName</gpxx:DisplayMode> </gpxx:WaypointExtension> </extensions> </wpt> And the 60Cx POI displays the text below. Note there is one line of white space between the name and address and four lines of white space below the birthday, but no wife line displays. Joeseph Blowski 2468 26rd W, Seattle Cell 206-123-4567 Home 206-555-9999 Birthday May 9
  8. If you get to within 15' of the coordinates the best thing to do is stick the GPSr in your pocket becuase unless you have surveyor grade equipment it's not going to get you any closer.
  9. Hey how come those little lines are so squished together on that topo map. Must be a printing error or something
  10. The thing you left off the post is where the trail head it located. I didn't even know where the wilderness area was until I looked it up http://www.wilderness.net/index.cfm?fuse=N...nder%20Mountain http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/olympic/recreation..._1.shtml#wonder
  11. I think any that you put on the Eastside (wet) will be quickly be snapped up. New caches don't last either.
  12. Jon, did I say thank you recently? Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
  13. Perhaps Ironman was not really sick. He was just laying in wait for Criminal
  14. You may want to check Jester's post. The cavers are not going to like the entrance coords being posted. If you leave something physical inside they will throw a fit!
  15. Thanks for the report! Sorry to miss you. I was at the ranger station at the pass yesterday and was getting really worried as I read the trail reports of snow and ice. Then I went inside to ask the ranger and she said "Oh those reports posted outside? They're 3 weeks old" Whew! I also went by the Denny trailhead and it was packed in the afternoon with cars parked up and down the road. I don't think we'll have any problem at 8AM though. We were eating dinner when the gully washer blew through. It made me glad I had switched the hike to today. Those bushes are going to be wet though. Looks like we will possibly have 6-7 folks.
  16. I would change the topic title if it was easy. But it's not Since there's not a lot of interest in doing the alpine lakes tour this Saturday and the weather predicted to be better on Sunday I think we'll move the hike to this Sunday (8/10). Let me know if you plan on coming!
  17. Melakwa's Heaven wasn't on the route since I thought we might be short on time. But if not.....
  18. Yep that is the route. Thanks for posting it! My map program is on my desktop computer and the monitor is out for repair for a few more days.
  19. Well it almost came off for tomorrow but not quite. It seems a lot of folks are at the campout or heading to SeaFair. So here's your chance to do Mark's guided Alpine lake tour next weekend instead. I will throw this out for a straw horse but the day and time are flexible. Let's meet at Saturday 8/9? 8:00AM at a cache near the Denny Creek trail head - GCVYZK N47 24.703 W121 26.366. Then we can park one or two vehicles at the Denny trailhead and head back to the Talapus trailhead at N47 24.078 W121 31.084. Late comers could meet us there. It's a pretty long hike and should take all day. I've done the trails from both ends before but not the through hike.
  20. Hmmmm I wonder who took Larry around the lakes
  21. I'm thinking of a loop starting at the Talapus trail head perhaps around 8AM then hititng Talapus, Ollalie, Pratt, Lower Tuscohatchie, and Melakwa then out Denny creek. I need someone with a trail pass to park at the other end. Shoot me an e-mail or call 425-213-4883. If tommorrow doesn't pan out maybe I'll try next weekend
  22. No the other way around. At least the way I use the terms. I call a solid wood shaft a hiking staff. They are often elaboratly carved and shellacked. The things I call poles are usually made out of hollow aluminum.
  23. The other difference between a hiking staff and a hiking pole is the pole is generally hollow and lighter than a staff. The poles are usually collapsible so that you can pack them easier if your not using it/them and they may have a shock absorbing mechanism. Also pole will have a hand grip, staffs generally do not.
  24. Dang I knew I should have sent my check in.
  25. And yes, the county cleverly addresses ownership in D.2.... D.2 says the county can put a lein against the property. Which doens't address the ROW vs. Land Onwership issue I was alluding to. Quite often the land owner owned to the middle of the road and the ROW is an easment. Plus this is a county code. Each county can be different. In my state some counties claim a ROW on every section and quater section line. Per that code a cache in a remote tract of land there with the owners permission could be seized and a lein places against the film canister. Which gets me back to my generic point. Each cache needs to be taken on it's own merit. Addressing your OP. More than once I've cut trees in the ROW without a thought as to who may have owned them. They had fallen across the road. I was merely commenting on the ownership issue. I agree with RK that the ordinance doesn't deal with ownership. It doesn't really matter since it was not germain to the OP though. But back to the topic I suspect that, like many land managers, the cache reviewers would rather not know about caches with "iffy" permission. However, if you ask either directly they will be forced to say no. Note that I am not a reviewer and am only making assumptions that would not apply to them all.
