Never had a problem with my 500 - I rather like it. Of course, I've never had to deal with Customer Service. Nor have I used any other GPSrs.

If you use the POI system rather than the geocaching system, you can change the icons to whatever you want - perhaps you can see some icons better than others.
Don't think it will translate hints for you. But if you're using MCMConvert, then you're using CacheMate, which will decode the hint for you if you wish.
Click GOTO, then click to the right or the left to change from Alphabetical to Nearest. You can tell what you've clicked to by looking at the bottom of your screen. Very plain.
Try ditching the Geocaching system and try the POI system. You'll find you're able to edit, delete, change the icon, rename, add, etc. Only thing you'll miss are the neat little geocaching icons.

Garmin is coming out with Mac software for their units, but since I own a Magellan eXplorist I haven't kept up with that news.
If you have other questions regarding GPS units and Macs, take a look at my website http://chimbisimo.googlepages.com
I've created a website for the express purpose of helping MUGs (Mac-using Geocachers). I have some how-to's and reviews of all the software that's out there on my Resources page.

Go paperless using a PDA of some sort. Unfortunately, Magellan hasn't expanded much on their geocaching system and when a hint is viewed, only a small fraction of it is.
Go for the color. The AAA's only last for like 8 hours or something, but you'll get a coupon for a deal on rechargable Magellan batteries, so you should get those (17 hours/charge) or you can buy Motorola equivalents for cheaper.
To access the trails, open up your Layers sidebar and expand the Featured Content menu, then activate the Trimble Outdoors Trips radio button.
EDIT: The main use of this for me will be to see which trail caches reside along, and the rough path the trail takes so I kind of know beforehand. I already see several trails that I've never heard about, but I also see routes that I've imported into Google Earth myself that don't appear among Trimble's hikes.
