  1. Interesting... I have participated casually and in cycles in this endeavor since 2002, have cached in places like, well, the Taj Mahal, behind Bono's house, and other places with stories. I was a premium member for years way before smartphones, and had paid for the other app... it's been a while, and today I was in a new location that looked cacheworthy, and I fired up the app. Just like most good things, it's not surprising that Groundspeak has strayed from the original heart, vision, and mission and is essentially merely now a profit vehicle. I get it. Can't do it for free... It appears to be working. In July '17 alone the itunes app store revenue is upwards of $400,000. I'm not sure If I will renew my premium levels ever again, but I applaud the company for successfully monetizing the endeavor so many people enjoy. That's what it's about, right?
  2. OK, on my Sportrak Pro, I use the magellan Topo software because the road detail is identical to the streets software, it's just the POIs that are different. Of course, now I also have a 60CS and am wondering if that works on the Garmin level as well. Does the Topo have the same street level detail between the two Garmin products? I could care less about the POIs included with City... just need the streets and contour lines... Thanks for the help!
  3. Received this today after a couple of emails from the service person saying they expected the backorder any day... looks like they might be on the way soon: Greetings from Groundspeak Thanks for your order! This is a message to let you know that your order will ship tomorrow via the United States Postal Service. Groundspeak Travel Bug (4 Pack) Shipping times may vary, due to your distance from Seattle, Washington where the order has shipped. 4. Feeling your angst... I ordered four via paypal on the 9th of January - nothing but a paypal debit and email that day to show for it. Just slightly agitated, gradually increasing in intensity, though...
  5. Thanks! Are the differences between 6 and 7 significant? How about road details between topo and city? I know with the Mapsends the streets were identical, but the poi's and elevation lines w re the differences - thus I preferred topo on the Sportrak...
  6. Upgrading from a Sportrak Pro to a 60CS. I need to get the CitySelect 7 and Topo software. Where is the best place/price? Thanks!
  7. Pro, D/C 4302. At least two cracks, middle screws. Recieved the Costco Bundle as a Chrsitmas Gift in 2002.
  8. I'd be willing to trade straight across if someone wanted to. I just have much more need for topo than poi's. Not many hotels and restaurants where I take the sportrak...
  9. I do! Even have a fly specific cache! Fisherman's Friend Visit me here: http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  10. Paypal enabled, tired of not having real maps on the Sportrak Pro. email piscator@earthlink.net
  11. Is White Elephant still open on Sprague? I used to get decent deals on sporting goods there (moved to OR from Sandpoint...)If they had it, White Elephant was less costly than than Black Sheep in CdA... http://www.whiteelephantstores.com/ Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  12. Got that deal b4 Christmas... It's a good one. The mapping software is nice, and a Magellan will take you to the cache in the woods while the garmin users are wandering aimlessly with no signal...
  13. and the two older of three kids. Gives Mom and baby time to rest... -Gus Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  14. Hey, the Boxers would keep up anything in that valley, and I'd hep you in out this valley (as would lots of others), and Lazee in the hills... Don't sweat it. I think we Rogue/Klamath/GP folks need more caches between Smith River and Port Orford, not Bend. Why mess with the pumice dust when you can hide it in a fern grotto?! I'm new to this geocaching thing, but it appears there are areas & folks with "clean Orvis gear and dry fly attitudes" in every sport, eh? Give me my korean-made-swedish-labeled rods and a good stike indicator any day... er, well you get my drift. Tight Lines and a WAAS Signal to ya, mate! -Gus Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator [This message was edited by The Strand Family on January 28, 2003 at 10:24 AM.]
  15. I use the gpxspinner.com site to do a terrific conversion of the gpx file to convert the html pages, then use isilox to convert it and get the pdb ready to install, and isilo reader on my palm. I also have avantgo, but I like isilo better as a reader. Avantgo is ok for USAToday and WSJ... Totally happy with that setup. Mobipocket left me numb and dissatisfied. -G Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  16. From Costco... They're always pretty quick on the rebates. Made the total cost of the Pro, Streets & Destinations CD, Car mount/DC Adapter and case $188!!! Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  17. The detail maps add a lot if you use it for driving. I have the Streets and Destinations CD that was bundled with my unit from Costco, and there is a ton of information there. I basically have the western third of OR loaded up, and it took about half of the 22M remaining memory. It's easily worth $40-50, but I wouldn't go for much more than that. ..and from what I gather, the respective software rom Magellan and Garmin are the only ways to upload maps to their units... Here is an ebay search for you -Gus Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  18. Enjoy the new toy! My wife got me a Sportrak Pro for Christmas for my hiking and fishing endeavors, and I stumbled on to Geocaching... I love mine so far, and this is a fun way to get more use out of it and involve the fam! -Gus Visit me at http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
  19. yup yup yup... forgot that. Gotta disable the map b4 killing it. -G
  20. Menu button (the open book icon) ...Map Utilities ...Delete File SECNDMAP.DAT Then you can create/edit the regions isn Mapsend and reupload the new ones to the unit. -G
  21. I wanted to put some faces with monikers, but have been informed that the Strand family is attending a wedding this evening... Thanks anyway to all of you locals for the e-help in getting some newbies up and going! Hopefully one of our meager cache attempts will help the contest! 22. Worked like a charm. This and the MyMeridian hack give you lots of room to ID your unit and welcome/warn... -G
  23. I was wondering... does anyone have an easyGPS file with waypoints from Medford relatively close to the road to Gold Beach/the coast via 199 and 197? I thought it would be fun to make said file for that trip and other trips from the Valley. I travel to Eugene with work once or twice a year, and PDX as well... If you have a file of waypoints or a route like that in easyGPS format, let me know! I would be happy to store these files and make a page for downloading them. Think about it... 24. The first cache I placed (just a week or two ago) is still going, but a single item was removed without anyone logging it - A used up one-shot camera, labeled and packed separately in its own bag for Lazyboy (above) that I retrieved from one of his caches that requires wearing waders or surviving really cold water up to your mid thigh to get to... trying to do a nice thing, I put it in my cache and let him know - knowing he'd find it within days. It disappeared... so now I'm thinking moats are good, or at least guard ticks and bovine mine fields. -Gus
  25. We have about nine caches to our name. The kids like the goodies, I like a more cerebral approach. I would much rather find a clever answer than a dollar store trinket or something similar ("Where do you keep your animals?" On You, Me and Wapiti was a great laugh and not obvious...) Heck, with my caches I will be emailing custom first finder's certificates for folks with their name and the cachename and coords on it (see a small sample here: http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator/smallgeocert.jpg ) I guess that's a virtual certificate... So hurl flames if you like, but as a new cacher, I like the virtuals. -Gus The Strand Family http://home.earthlink.net/~piscator
