  1. Unfortunatly the big needle still only points North. I just updated to 1.55 and no change to that screen except I don't see the sun and moon any more. Could be because it is night here but that's just a guess. I'll check again tomorrow. I am very pleased with the added features that the upgrade brought.
  2. Thanks everyone! The West Virginia GIS service gave me the 1:24000 topos of the last half of my trip. I'm really only looking for them to give me a general idea of the area that we will be hiking and to plot the caches that will be along the way. I will be using council maps for any info pretaining specifically to the trail. If only I could find similar 1:24000 topos of the Virginia half. Once again, thanks for all the help and links.
  3. Thanks for the reply. I'm really only looking for the 56 mile section stated above. Even if it did cross onto a couple maps you can merge them in Ozi now to give a more customized map of just the area of interest. For some reason I thought digital 1:50,000 topos were available for most of the states at no cost. I thought Canada was the only country still charging for such info. Thanks anyhow.
  4. Thanks Mopar, I had looked at those maps already and they seem to be lacking the resolution that I was hoping for. I have been looking at the Conference Website as well. We are serious about how we will go about this. At least two of our party have previously hiked the entire trail from start to finnish. Just hoping to find some detailed topos to supliment the trip.
  5. Hi, I'm living in New Brunswick, Canada and wish to hike a section of the trail this spring. We are looking at hiking from Front Royal (Virginia) to Harper Ferry (West Virginia). Does anyone have digital topos for that area that they could share? I use Oziexplorer. Really looking forward to visiting your area. Thanks, Kevin
  6. I havn't noticed any stress cracks yet, but I had to send my SportTrek back to have the buttons replaced. All the symbols seemed to wear off within a year. I got it back quickly but unfortunatly, they are wearing off again after only a couple of months. I must have toxic sweat because I havn't had bug dope on yet this season.
  7. Does anyone know of an online site where I can find one of these? Thanks, Scouterkevin
  8. I think my concern is getting the bug icon off caches that have not had the bug in it for months. There are caches in our area that have said they have a bug but in the real world, someone took him and didn't log him months ago. How can we remove the bug's info from the cache page to avoid dissapointment for cachers?
  9. I don't know about other areas, but my local area has at least two caches that say they have travel bugs, but they have not been there for months. Someone took them and never logged it on the internet. This sends numerous people to that cache only to find that the bug is not there. Is there a way to get the bug icon off a page that you know does not have a bug? Thanks.
  10. quote:Originally posted by white_owl: It comes down to a simple matter of math. Take this scenario for example using the city co-ordinates provided by Garmin. A bug released in Vancouver has to travel 4441 km to reach Halifax. If I release a bug here in North Bay and require it to hit the 2 coasts, it has to travel to Vancouver (3244 km), return to North Bay (3244 km) then on to Halifax (1250 km) for a total travel distance of 7738 km. This increases its distance by 3297 km almost doubling the distance of travel of the bug realeased in Vancouver. This puts anyone in central Canada at a huge disadvantage over anyone living on either coast. To be fair, all bugs have to be realesed from the same point. This could be anywhere in Canada as long as all bugs have the same distance to travel. I hope this answers your question. White Owl Ok, that makes sense. So do they all start off in one cache, someone comes along and chooses one of the 25-50 that are there and then moves it on? Just trying to understand how the start will work.
  11. Can someone explaine the reasoning behind all of them starting at the same point? Will that not just leave a pile of them in one spot? Will that not give the people in that area a serious advantage by allowing them to help theirs moving and leave the "mailed ones" sitting at the starting line? I would suggest a shotgun start where anyone can place theirs on that day (anywhere in Canada) and bugs are only activated on that day. I would also recomend a virtual finish line where you are done after having been logged into caches in 7 different provinces. My thinking behind this is again, people on the East Cost would have the advantage of orchestrating the final leg of their bug.
  12. Sounds great to me. Where can we sign up? On a side note, I live in New Brunswick and have a trip to Newfoundland planed for late July. If any bugs can make it to the Moncton area and only have NFLD left to visit, let me know and I may be able to make the final dash.
  13. Thanks for the heads up! Picked up the Keji/Cape Breton Highlands set. Can't wait to check it out.
  14. Just wondering if anyone has tried them. They seem expensive. Was hoping to fine some friends who wanted to go splits on the Atlantic Canada set.
