  1. Hi, I have had an Etrex Vista for almost 7 years (Vista, Vista C, Vista CX and now Vista HCX) and I have been happy with it all the time except for one issue: the plastic around the unit was lose after approximately a year and I returned it to REI and they replaced the entire unit. However, I received a letter from REI last time, that they will not accept any returns in the future and I should contact garmin directly. Now I am afraid that the whole shipping etc will take weeks and I started my research whether I should upgrade to a new unit including paperless geocaching. I used my Vista for both street navigation and geocaching/hiking. Now my questions: 1. How is the Oregon compared to the Vista HCX, e.g. regarding the screen in the sun, size, weight, ease to use, battery duration, street navigation, etc. 2. Is the paperless function easy to use (I am a premium member with geocaching.com)? 3. Can I switch from City Select Maps to Topographical maps? How is that working? 4. Is the touch screen quality comparable to an Ipod Touch or worse/better? 5. I guess my biggest concern is whether the screen is readable or not. I was always happy with the Etrex Vista and do not want to lower my expectations. Thanks for any help.
  2. Thanks. The hint with the Windows Installer Cleanup worked!
  3. Sorry guys, but that did not work. Every time I tried to install the newest version (6.15.6), it asks for the file main.msi for the deinstallation of the previous version and stops the installation. Tried it 3x, no success. Any other hint?
  4. I installed Mapsource 6.15.5, but infortunately it has a bug. Now I tried to update the version with Mapsource 6.15.6, however, it does not work. When the setup program tries to deinstall the old version, it always asks for a file main.msi. I tried to provide this file by extracting the mapsource.exe-file via winrar, but these files (from a Mapsource 6.15.6, 6.15.4, and a 6.13.6 version) were not accepted by the deinstallation routine. Any help?
  5. I look for a mount for the Etrex Vista C that could be placed at the windshield of a car. The unit should be releasable very easily and the mount itself plus attaching tool should be quite solid and not fall down after short time. Any experiences?
  6. I have the Garmin Vista Cx as well and work with both City Select North America and City Select Europe V7. This is what you need. Although, the European maps are not cheap: approx. 300 USD North America: 110 USD.
  7. I gave my mum my old Garmin Etrex Vista C and she loves it. She is 65 now and not too sophisticated in computers, but she is downloading the City Select maps to the GPSr like hell and road navigating with it is really self-explanatory.
  8. What about the vibration? I see some plastic cushion on your second picture. Could you read your unit while driving let's say 50 miles an hour?
  9. Does anybody can give a recommendation how to use the Garmin Etrex Vista Cx during a motorcycle trip? I do have the Garmin bike kit for 15 Dollar, but the question is whether the vibration is an issue for it to use. I would also prefer a kit with a long neck, so that the unit is easier to read while driving. Any recommendations for that? Thanks in advance for any help.
  10. Sorry guys, I did not read the full thread, so maybe something is already discussed in detail. I am in the US since January and travel a lot. Therefore I would like to see a feature which gives me the best caches in an area of x miles. Knowing that many people have different opinions of the quality of a cache, the ranking should be divided into different categories, like - scenic view - quality of the hide - quality of walking area - overall result I would also like to see the average experience of the quoters, i.e. if somebody is celebrating the quality of the cache and has 5 founds in total on his account I don't care that much of his opinion. Currently I am really a little bit tired of that long lasting preparation for a new city. What is the latest development of establishing such a feature?
  11. Recommendations for caches in Germany: Try all of Blinky Bill (nr. 1 of Germany's ranking) or DocW if you are in North-Rhine Westfalia. Never try Bernd B's, he is the German throwing-cans-into-the-nature-machine!
  12. Thanks for the recommendations. Yes, I am really new in Atlanta, but was quite surprised about Midtown Magnolia and especially A dog of a cache, what the goal of these caches should be. Comments of people who were already at Stone Mountain are still welcome.
  13. I am planning to stay at the Stone mountains NP in Atlanta, GA, for a day. Any recommendations which of the about 16 caches are best practise? Especially when I want to invite a rookie into geocaching and therefore do not want to search in dog s***, dumping areas or boring micros on a parking lot which were placed by throwing a can out of the open car window. Thanks for any answers. I am pretty new in Atlanta and was sometimes disappointed about the imaginativeness of some cache owners to place caches in urban areas.
  14. My current solution is to convert loc-files via GSAK into mapsource and then download it. Better than nothing.
  15. Yeah, I ticked also USB. I have a connection to the GPSr via Mapsource. Therefore I would guess that I do not have a driver problem.
  16. I also tried 60cs and 76c and 76cs. No connection. And yes, I chose USB as the connection mode. Any other recommendations?
  17. I can't connect my new Etrex Vista C with the EasyGPS software. I took the latest version of EasyGPS where this problem should be fixed, but it doesn't work. The hint to select GPSMAP60c instead (was a hint for the Legend C in the forum) doesn't work either. Any suggestions?
  18. I saw the GPSmap 60cs in action. Nice display and maybe a better antenna, but too unhandy for my purposes. Yes, I meant the batteries. I have a charge cable for the car for my old Vista, but never used it because the act to connect it was too circumstancial - in my view. My question regarding the batteries was more whether the color display is much power consuming.
  19. Thanks for the answer. Seems that only 24 MB memory is still one disadvantage of the Etrex Vista. But 3 MB is better than 8. Are you currently working with an Etrex Vista C? In that case are you satisfied with the power supply?
  20. Currently I have an Etrex Vista and intend to buy an Etrex Vista C together with City Select North America. In this regard I have the following questions: 1. Is the 24 MB memory sufficient to download all major cities? 2. How big are the pieces of City Select to download? In old MapSource versions one piece was always 8 MB, so that only three areas were downloadable. Or are the downloadable parts free of choice in their wideness? 3. How reliable is the navigation of City select in a car? 4. Where to buy best (e.g. in a bundle)? 5. Any recommendations if not Etrex Vista C is the choice? 6. How long last the batteries, e.g. 2000 mAh rechargeables? Much shorter than with an Etrex Vista black/white?
