  1. I just wanted to say a word of thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. There were some really good responses. I had a great presentation at MWGB and added content not only just for outdoor safety but also for indoor (we all live somewhere I would seem to think)and traveling safety. I figured that would make it a very well rounded presentation and it really turned out that way as well.

If anyone is seriously interested in the slide deck I'd be more than happy to share except for the "nay sayers" who troll the forums and have nothing positive to share. . .

  2.

Though I'm the first to believe outdoor safety is important, what does your "quiz" have to do with the How Do I ("Wondering how the site works or how to accomplish some geocaching-related task? Ask your fellow geocachers here.") forums ?

Is there a forum better related to Safety? I certainly didn't see one. I figured this would be the best one for multiple reasons one of which is more people would check this out rather than other forums.

However, let me know which safety forum would be the best to use and I'll post over there so not to bother you.

Ask your fellow geocachers here.") forums ?

    I did.

  3. I'm putting together a presentation and looking for any serious suggestions / thoughts / recommendations / best practices / etc. that I may have not thought of for Outdoor Safety..

    Examples include:

    - Letting someone know

    - Communications protocol

    - What to do if lost

    - Signaling

I'm been working on a quiz to be on the screen before the presentation that has questions (true / false, multiple choice, etc.). Feel free to post ideas here as well along with the answer.

    - Moss always grows on the north side of trees. <couldn't resist> <"true">

I'd be more than happy to share for others post event if anyone would be interested.

  4. To play them:

You need one of the following: Garmin Colorado/Oregon, iPhone, Android device, or a Java-capable phone. Or if you have an old Pocket PC with a Bluetooth GPSr... Look at my signature line for the list of third-party Wherigo Players, which can be run on cell phones. Your red Magellan does not have a Wherigo Player option. I don't know what cell phone you use.

To find what is closest to you:

    Pocket query.

But since I'm never that brief, you can also look for all Wherigo cartridges in Michigan on the Wherigo site by selecting Michigan from the right side section titled "Cartridge Search". You could also display all caches on the geocaching.com map and filter out everything but the Wherigo cache type.

Please continue to post in this thread for help getting set up. You can be notified of replies (so you don't have to keep checking back here) by clicking the "Watch Topic" button above and to the right of your first post. However, please keep in mind the more information you give, the more effective help we can provide.

Here is a link to ALL of the Wherigos in Michigan: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=0c3ba8c7-e003-4111-b910-36198a29d7f4

126 to date and none have ever been archived in Michigan!

    Ohh rah!

  5. Getting this message when clicking a link in a log:

System.FormatException: Guid should contain 32 digits with 4 dashes (xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). at System.Guid.GuidResult.SetFailure(ParseFailureKind failure, String failureMessageID, Object failureMessageFormatArgument, String failureArgumentName, Exception innerException) at System.Guid.TryParseGuidWithDashes(String guidString, GuidResult& result) at System.Guid.TryParseGuid(String g, GuidStyles flags, GuidResult& result) at System.Guid..ctor(String g) at Geocaching.UI.LogBookPanel.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e)

  6. As a lot of you know, Marge and I have a few earthcaches and after most weekends and at other times we get a lot of email notifications of a cacher(s) logging their finds. We always send a kind of thank you for visiting email after each log. Our question, do you fellow EC owners acknowledge finds on your ECs or is it a total waste of time? Please, we have enough dramatics here..........just a friendly discussion. Thanks. :)

I try to always send some sort of a reply with a confirmation note about their answers, a correction, perhaps something I noticed from their profile, etc. But I do thank them for visiting my earth cache.

  7. You could set up a series of message boxes triggered by a timer. On the timer's ticked/elapsed event, show the next message box. By the way, this is the same way people try to animate images, though the interval between message boxes is much shorter.

I thought I remember seeing something exactly like this before....

  8. Yet another idea of mine going through my mind....

Going to be putting the player on a stakeout. One the bad guy "shows" I want to have a text message display. Any potential way of having that message shut off (stop displaying text) after a certain amount of time?

Any way of recognizing if they clicked it within a certain amount of time?

  9.

That's one of the funniest things I have seen!

I hope it's all the whitespace and the page that looks like it's from 1994 that you think is funny, and not my picture. :-)

Profile is great.... whitespace is the funny part. However, on my CGA monitor I just 'center' the picture I leave the whitespace off of my monitor. Works great. Everyone should try it.

  10. The fixed width is good for some, but my main monitor is 2048 pixels wide, and so what is there is just crazy low, and there is a TON of whitespace on either side of my profile that is artificially created by this column. I don't remember seeing any horizontal scrolling before, so how about an option for column width, in the same manner as for map height, with a simple click on an icon, you can make it one of several sizes, though eliminating the column might be nice also.

    GCProfile.jpg

That's one of the funniest things I have seen!

  11. What about the width of the pages, is it me or is it narrower? No way to will a larger screen, pretty much fits on half of mine now?

    Forums are full screen

Blog is wider than the main site

    Feedback is narrower...

Anyone know how to make this consistent in HQ?

Site Hamsters don't get to attend website development 101. First thing they teach . . . DON'T use a fixed with for web sites. But then again I only use my CGA monitor to view GC.com anyway so what I am talking about?

  12. I read somewhere that you shouldn't have more than five zones active at any one time (can't remember where I read it). I have an Oregon and when testing a cartridge which is much simpler than yours, the unit gave up and had to be switched off and on again before it responded. It worked, ultimately, but only when I'd got rid of grandiose ideas and reverted to basics. Frustrating ain't it?

I've had cartridges I've built with 15. I was and will admit playing with fire!

Edit: Guess I can't use colors in the forums. Or, just haven't figured it out.

  14. You must re-open the cartridge you built in the editor you used, save the cartridge locally on your computer, and re-published on the Wherigo site. That will take care of your problems.

If you still have questions PM me. I can further help you.
