I once bought a new container for a geocache and had it with my other groceries for 20 minutes on the way home. A weeks latter it was chomped to death by the local wildlife. 2. quote:Originally posted by Woodsters Outdoors:We are going to purchase a GPS today. Just wondering what other uses other than Geocaching , is a GPS good for and what you use it for? Where do you take it when not caching? Also, not getting a lot of response on the other forum, but in your opion, which is the better GPS: Garmin Gecko 201 or the Magellan Sportrak (not the pro or map version, but the standard version). We are going in a few hours to get it and would like some vets to point us in the right direction. We are leaning towards the Gecko 201. Brian Wood Woodsters Outdoors http://www.woodsters.com If you get the Gecko, it will only be good for mostly Geocaching. I think that one has a few games as well, or maybe that's the next model up. I suggest that if you want your GPS for other things, Move up to the Garmin Etrex, the better ones have maps that you can use on the road while traveling.
  3. quote:Originally posted by scontapay:Just browsed through the forums, faq, and glossary and trying to find out what a person is called who goes geocaching would it be "_geocacher_r"? TIA Sam -- " The name Geocacher is what I call myself, but if you tell that to the person on the street, you will get all kinds of looks. I once told a park ranger that I was a geocacher, and he spent 20 minutes showing me every book in the gift shop that was about rocks. I think it is better to tell someone who knows nothing of the sport, that you are on a GPS treasure hunter.
  4. we saw another geocacher at the time but I didn't say anything as I tried to be discreet and I do not know if there is a rule against talking to another geocacher for help. I allways hope to find a geocacher at a cache, we are a strange bunch and only other cachers know why we search high and low for tuperware in the woods. I even have one of those cool stickers in the back of my car window to let others know I am around. You will really enjoy the folks you meet on the trail.
  5. There seams to be a new rule that all the cords for a multi-stage cache be provided in order to get it approved. Is there a way that I can provide all the cords on the 1st report, or do I have to wait till it is archived in order to contact the administrator to give them all the cords. In my area we have several different administrators.
  6. I'm going to be hitting Waverly Park HARD. (I've never been there, but my mother used to go to the Tuberculosis Hospital as a child while HER mother was in there. There's some family history in that park) I intend to have SMTC's technique down pat after next week! DrMemory You will really like Waverly, the nice thing about those caches is that SMTC live close by and you have a good chance of bumping into him while you there. Enjoy and hope to see you around. Here is the link to it: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=45357 DrMemory I noticed that you have only did that one cache in that park. You need to go over to the stairway that goes to the top of that knob and do the other caches in that park. You will really enjoy them, they were created by the local master of caches: Show Me The Cache, Get out there and enjoy. Turtle
  8. quote:Originally posted by DrMemory:I did my first cache last night, after work. Here is the link to it: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=45357 As you can see, this cache has been wet, frozen, or completely soaked since December. It's in a damp location, and the hiding place tends to collect water. I think that if the cache isn't shoved deeply into the hiding place, it won't get submerged, so a more airtite container could fix it, but it will have to be taken home for a day or two to dry it out, since once it is soaked, airtight containers will only keep it that way. I consider this an important cache. It's one that can be done in just a few minutes, and was the perfect one for me to try out my equipment and make sure all my GPSr settings were right, before going on a more extended trip with a coworker this weekend. In addition, I pass right by this one every day on the way home from work, and live very near it. I'd love to fix this cache up. It wouldn't take long, just cart it home, dry it out, and pop it into a new container that will fit the hiding place. I could also drop in some new sheets of paper, and maybe a small trade item or two for a mini. What worries me is that to do this I'll have to REMOVE the cache for about a day, and I would want to post that it was going to be gone in advance. Should I do this, without permission of the owner? I don't want to offend him/her, but I might live closer, so it might be easier for me to fix this one up. What do you folks think I should do? DrMemory I did this cache back in Feb/March time frame and it was soaked then. I too like the location. I have e-mailed the owner on other subjects and got a response in a couple of days. I think he lives in the east end and would proably like it if you would fix it for him. Your idea for a plastic container to hold the tin sounds like a good one. After doing that cache myself, I think it would be best if you replace everything, logbook, and tin. Then you can ask the owner if he wants the old logbook (or whats left of it). I would ask the permision of the owner 1st.
  9. On your opening page of your My Cache Page, there is you highlighted zip code and you highlighted state in the top / right corner. Click on the state to get the latest caches placed within 100 miles of your zip code, with the latest listed 1st.

Did not mean to down the Venture. I guess it just depends on what works for you.
  11. quote:Originally posted by RiL:Ok, now I know Im going to regret asking this but what type of GPS would you recomend? I would like one that could mark a number of sites and one I could use those marks,or what ever thay are called, and make a map on my computer. Ok now shoot, but be gentle I have never did this before. Rick I use a Garmin Etrex Legend. I was going to buy the Garmin Etrex Venture, but decided to spend a few extra bucks. I am glad I did. The Ledend is a great one to start with, it takes a couple of weeks to get used to all the settings. After 148 finds I still don't feel I have to upgrade any time soon. I wish I could make this comment about my PC.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Geo Strider:One geocacher in our area uses 2 and 3 inch diameter pvc pipe for geocache containers. They are generally 8 or so inches long and have been fitted with one screw on end caps and one closed cap. This individual goes so far as to paint them tan to blend in to our desert environment. They seem to hold up well over time, are water tight, and do not rust. Nice idea. __Veni, Vidi, Cachi ...__ I use these type PVC containers. But you might not want to use them in a urban enviroment, they look too much like a bomb. I use them in the woods where I have had problems with the local wildlife.
  13. I was planning a trip to Ohio from Kentucky. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to look threw all the pages of caches to find the rest area caches along the way. Below is a list that I know for I65 threw Kentucky. If someone could list the ones in Ohio from Cincinnati to Akron Ohio, it would help me out. I65 in Kentucky: I-65 Southbound Pit Stop Kentucky Turnpike TAKE A BREAK 2 Tennessee Welcome I-65S Kentucky Welcome I-65N If you would like to list the rest area caches in your state I am sure someone else could use the info.
  14. I have logged one of my lost TB in the Travel Bug Graveyard Cache, but feel I can do more. I am starting this lost and found list so that some of these MIA can return to active status. My lost bug: Coast to Coast HARE
  15. I don't have a problem with going back to a cache to get a travel bug, if you plan on moving it along on it's mission. But I have gone to other states to get TB to put in my caches just to see a local cacher pick them up to put in theirs. NOT COOL
  16. quote:Originally posted by Matt1344:I assume Altoids tins aren't waterproof. Anybody come up with a good alternative for micro caches? I use the new M & M tubes, they come in all kinds of colors and two sizes.
  17. Is there a way that you can take over a cache that has no owner? When I tryed to notify the cache owner, they were no longer an active member, but the cache is still active.
  18. When you force down two tubes of M&M mini's, just to have the containers to place two micros on the way home from work.
  19. I have found that if you have an archived cache that has never been approved. You can use it when creating new caches by puting in the new cache coorninates on the unused page you can pull up a topo of the new area and get an idea of what the new cache will look like before submitting it. You can also use these never approved archived caches to see where a waypoint of a multi cache or a cache that only give the parking coorninates in the title, to see where the cache is located on a topo.
  20. I plan on taking the pictures from my caches to any local get togethers that are planned in the area. If there are spoilers, I plan on placeing a coversheet over it and explain that if you flip over the coversheet that it might spoil it for you.
