  1. I know I will get flamed for this since this sport is GPS based but the newer generation cracks me up with all the car GPS systems out there and it seems most of the people I see using them grew up in this town and should know where they are going already:P And they did a couple years ago! I did this weird thing when I was growing up called paying attention to my surroundings and I knew how to get around town just fine by the time I was able to drive:) Technology becomes a crutch sometimes, I gave directions to a friend one time and he said he would just use the GPS, it was 1 turn was all he had to remember, reminds me of my Dad when he would run numbers all day on a calculator and I would ask him silly questions like what is 10x5 and he would instinctively enter it in the calc, I think if I asked 2+2 at the right time he might use the calculator to find the answer. I do think the car GPS are cool as heck when you are out of town visiting someplace you have never been or don't frequent!
  2. How does a dog off leash destroy the plant life anymore than a wild animal? Do the bears and mountain lions in the woods behind my house act more respectful to the plantlife than my dog does? I don't let him offleash much because of the bears and mountain lions though heh. Hikers aren't any better, I live and work on a summit high point of the county and I was just reading summit logs of visitors making the high point and almost everyone admitted to trespassing on the site along with telling about all the signs warning against it, 1 guy admits to lying about his identity to gain access, a few encourage everyone else to trespass and tells them how to do it and it goes on and on with every log. So I guess you can go offtrail as long as its onto private property with signs telling you not to enter.
  3. "Discover" is used for TBs when someone sees them, like if a cacher takes a TB to an event and 4 or 5 people see the TB and "discover" it, it means you saw the TB but never took possession of it.
  4. Being from Texas, I realize some common things may take a bit of explain for you. I will try to type slowly. BM is "Bookmarks" from before the signature changed, which than changes it in all previous posts. What was there is; Oldest Unarchived Caches by State First cache placed by State Maybe if you checked your posts before you posted them you wouldn't have to take time to explain them to us. His post you guys are referring to is almost a year old, he has since changed his signature and got rid of the Bookmarks, hence the confusion.
  5. I have been wondering the same thing, I have only been using cachemate for a week or so and haven't figured out how to get my notes from cachemate back to my desktop and able to use them either through GSAK or GC.com to log finds/dnfs/etc. I will see if someone smarter than me can answer here or I will search google tomorrow heh. Too tired to search tonight:)
  6. why stop at 1500, just run it coast to coast down an interstate on every offramp:P
  7. Wow! I prefer my caching where the rattlesnakes live and not in a parking lot though lol, better scenery:) My kids know not to run off whether we are caching or whatever we are doing in the desert, they have lived here all their lives too and know about rattlesnakes and scorpions, etc, not to mention cactus, no one wants to end up in a cholla! Anyway, I don't live in Phoenix area(prefer it down here south of you guys) so I won't comment on anything else, have a nice day.
  8. Someone with more experience can correct me if I'm wrong but there should be 2 numbers for a TB, one is a reference number and if you create a generic account for them they could use the ref# to go online and read the details of a TB and its travels. The actual tracking number on the TB I would register and keep on your account or another "administrator" type account because with the tracking number you can log finds and everything else and the actual owner account could edit everything about the TB and delete/modify logs, etc.
  9. I bought a cheap PDA on Ebay that I don't need, I found my old charger and cable for my other PDA so I have an extra. I could try to get it setup for paperless caching and work something out with you if you are interested? I'll send you a PM and we can email about it if you are interested.
  10. It would be ok for him to help sell them in the Garage Sale Forum wouldn't it?
  11. Yes, at the bottom of the pocket query page http://www.geocaching.com/pocket/default.aspx there is a "My finds" place you can do a PQ on your finds once a week
  12. While the school may be publicly funded, and in some ways public property there are restrictions for the use of that property. In some localities trespassing can be very loosely defined in those kinds of instances for the very reasons you mention (security). And the guidelines state: Caches near, on or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These may include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports. Secondary schools include middle and high schools. You mentioned all the things that are bad ideas for the cache, schools being wary of suspicious people around and high chance of the kids finding it and destroying it or adding drugs to it(not what I would worry about but you mentioned it) and then asked what the guidelines are. So you already KNOW its a bad idea and then Jeep4two told you about the section in the guidelines that says : Off-Limit (Physical) Caches By submitting a cache listing, you assure us that you have adequate permission to hide your cache in the selected location. However, if we see a cache description that mentions ignoring "No Trespassing" signs (or any other obvious issues), your listing may be immediately archived. We also assume that your cache placement complies with all applicable laws. If an obvious legal issue is present, or is brought to our attention, your listing may be immediately archived. Caches may be quickly archived if we see the following (which is not exhaustive): ... * Caches near, on or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These may include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports. http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx wow.
  13. and the "Day to run" you select is the current day? IE today you would want to set it to run on Wednesday
  14. I like this thread, in the next few months I would love to upgrade my GPS and some of the things I am looking at are no touch screen, I prefer buttons to smudging up the screen, I see how dirty my GPSr gets while hiking in sweaty hands. Battery life and ease of changing them, for instance I have a Magellan explorist 500 and the rechargable pack is nice but I have forgotten the extra battery carrier it needs to use AAA batteries as backup and have been dead in the water so to speak. The Delorme with maps included is really nice, ebay is a cheap alternative to paying retail for detail maps for the other units as well as free maps you can find with a little searching. Definitely want more cache capibility, my 500 can only hold 200:( Paperless is a big plus, I carry a PDA to go paperless but it would be much easier all in one unit. One thing I would also like is larger scale or being able to zoom in further, right now I can only zoom in to 100ft scale(I believe its about 1/4") but so far I can't complain too much, I prefer the caches in remote areas with larger boxes(easier to find and more SWAG to keep the kids interested) and my old 500 usually gets me within 10 feet of the cache and pointed in the right direction. We haven't had as much luck with micro caches but I think a lot of that is we don't do them much and kinda get ammo cans on the brain when looking lol.
  15. haven't had an issue with hotmail either, get my PQs everyday!
  16. Be careful lol! I don't know if its their standard practice or they ran out of mailers but I ordered a stencil from them and recieved a card in the mail, my wife opened it and was shocked to find a "To my loving Husband on our Wedding Anniversary" card inside. I got a few VERY evil looks and I was clueless until she opened it up and the stencil and an invoice was inside lol. Maybe cheap cards are cheaper than the mailers and don't require as much postage or something? We both thought it was hysterical after the fact:)
  17. You can also find stencils if you want to paint your container with a similar logo(search the forums or google)
  18. I added a generic "Location" to my GC profile thinking that would be used in the forums but it still shows nothing as a location here? I can't find any other options or control panels in the forums that doesn't send me to edit my GC profile.
  19. Thanks for the info, awaiting activation to introduce myself over there! Definitely seems PHX area is much more active with events, etc. Looking forward to getting back into the game more and more.
  20. Its a Quarter in his picture, just under 1" diameter
  21. Is there any geocaching organization in Tucson or southern AZ? I am hoping to make it to the event in Gardner in May and was wondering if there is any other ways to get to know the area cachers! I actually Live on Mt. Lemmon now and getting back into caching after a 3 year hiatus when my wife got sick while pregnant with our baby boy, now both are doing great and loving getting back out caching!
  22. Aren't you worried the lazy cacher might not get it back on as good if its that hard?
  23. I think the theory is that if someone is willing to pay to be a member they might have more respect for the sport and not have problems with trashing the cache or something but there is always exceptions that blow theories out of the water.
  24. How large is your zip code? In town here we have some zip codes that only cover a few miles and a more rural zipcode on the edge of town covers 20 miles so a cache .3 miles from the zip could be 20.3 miles away depending on how it figures it?
