  1. If you need some other creative logs, check out these! http://loungingatwalden.googlepages.com/RandomLog.html This cache is one of my all time least favorites. Good-times! Thanks for the fun! This is my personal favorite log. This cache was ill-conceived and ill-received. A 12-billion dollar satellite system overhead, and this is the best hide you could come up with! TNLNSL! Those are hilarious! TFTH (Thanks for the humor)!
  2. How does one know what the FTF prize is when it's in with a lot of other new-cache stuff? Put it on top in a baggie with a note?
  3. I like your idea of a Geocoin/Travel Bug-only cache. Interesting.
  4. I'm the same on this comment. I like the hunt. My kids like the swag. And thankfully, they are not terribly picky (yet). However, being a newbie, the above posts so far are the best reference of what would be considered good cache content. I'm starting a new ammo can cache and am looking for ideas of what is appropriate and appreciated. Looks like anything goes as long as it's useful or of some value and not trashy beat up used McDonald's toys (which is primarily what I've found or worse).
  5. Is there a thread that shows cache content ideas? I don't want to hijack this one. I have been wondering what a good ammo can-sized cache should contain? Orlando Bloom© Brand Head Nets are always popular. Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Too funny. It does look like him!

  7. A recent find was a small container hoisted up into a tree on a flagpole style string device. I was looking around on the ground. The string was anchored just above eye level.

    Site Slowdown?

I would like an apology and think Ambrosia deserves one too. You misread my post, admonished me incorrectly, then called me simplistic, myopic and childish. I am going to report your post. I think you owe us a public apology. Both your and Ambrosia's posts on the matter at hand HAVE been myopic, simplistic and childish, and I will not apologize for pointing that out. This will stop now. I'm sorry I started this thread. I had no intention of expressing dissapproval or touching off a firestorm of angst. To be clear, I am not dissatisfied with Geocaching.com. I appreciate Jeremy, and the entire team for what they are doing to help make geocaching an enjoyable past time. It's new to me. I'm loving it. And I have no intention of holding people's feet to the fire. I greatly admire folks like Jeremy and team who have been able to turn a passion into an occupation. I will remind myself now, that if I ever get anxious over my hobby, I will step back a moment and remember not to sweat the small things in life. Life is good. I am fortunate in many, many ways. I strive to take the high road. Maybe my GPSr can help me find it! Anyone know the cords? Let's all take a deep breath, get in touch with our higher selves, and send out positive thoughts and energy to each other's higher selves. In so doing, all will be restored, and the universe can continue its blessings upon us. I think geocaching is fun. Us finding it is no accident. "There are no ordinary moments." - Dan Millman

    Site Slowdown?

I suspected slowdowns due to newbies like me. I got my new GPSr mid-December, so I guess I enjoyed the speediness of a normal traffic environment. I'm patient too. I'm loving the new interest and will extend the patience I've been shown. Thanks for the input fellas!

    Site Slowdown?

I've noticed a marked decline lately in site performance. Is it just me, or have others noticed? I'm writing this from work on a T1, so I can eliminate home ISP issues. Feedback anyone?
  11. I followed your advice, ditched the provided chain, and attached threaded wire and ferrels. This will soon be my first TB: Lady Wanderlust creatively named by my wife who also donated the attached bug.
  12. Thanks. I have had to walk away frustrated at times knowing the find is within a snake's biting distance, but could not find. But that's part of the fun!
  13. Thanks for the reply. I do find myself relying on the combination of arrow and distance.
  14. I've found a few caches by now, but most through the use of the electronic compass on my Magellan eXplorist 500 LE. I drive near the location using the maps from the web site, then park and press "GOTO" on the GPSr, select the cache name, and the press Enter. I then follow the arrow to the cache vicinity. If I don't find the cache quickly, I check the coordinates screen to re-zero in on the location and look again. Seems too easy like I'm cheating (when I fing the cache quickly). Am I? How do others use their GPSr to locate caches? Differently than above? Happy Holidays!
  15. Thank you gentle people for the help. This time around, I removed the battery and ran it off PC power. I doubt that did anything, but the firmware update worked this time. I think it knew you were helping! :-) I see the version number updated now on the first screen. I didn't notice at first because the firmware update says v2.03 and the first screen has a "5" preceeding the version number. I've also re-cleared the memory. I'm off to find booty! THANKS AGAIN !!!
  16. First, a comment. I like my new 500LE. It's been fun to use. What's not fun is Magellan's documentation and sometimes contradictory instruction. I've learned way more here than anywhere. To that end, my question(s) and issues regarding firmware updating: A) Magellan's web site indicates the upgrade firmware version to be v2.03 - how do I know what version I already have? (Magellan's instructions) state "#4. With your eXplorist turned off, connect your USB/Data cable to your PC" - and then- #5. Connect your eXplorist special USB connector to the back of your unit." However, in their FAQs, they contradict: Question: How do I properly connect my eXplorist 400/500/600 to USB and power? Answer: Attach the USB connector to the back of your eXplorist GPS receiver prior to connecting AC power and the USB connector into your PC. You must connect your cables and power in this order. My Question: which is correct and does it really matter? C) When attempting to follow steps, and running the firmware installer .exe, it never "finds" an attached device but all cables are attached peroperly and the GPSr turns on in Transfer Mode. Anyone else have this trouble? D) Another (Magellan's instructions) confuser: #13. Once the upload is complete, the unit will restart, then it will automatically power down in less than one minute. Please do not perform any operation on the unit while waiting for power down. #14. After the update has been completed, press the power key on the eXplorist unit to perform the five second shut down. My question: Didn't number 13 already say it would automatically power itself down? Wouldn't #14 be moot? I never got that far anyway, just read ahead at the seemingly retarded instructions that aren't working for me anyway. Sorry, frustration setting in. ------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for any input! You guys rock!
  17. I just got an e500 LE too - no charger - WTF Magellan? Fortunately, it did come with a AAA battery adapter. Didn't yours?
  18. There sure is a big price difference in cards. Any idea why some are so expensive? Example: http://www.macmall.com/macmall/search/sear...amp;incimage=on
  19. You were correct. Cable was upside down. I went back to reinvestigate the FAQs. Still did not find where that was mentioned. After further reading in the FAQs somewhere, I saw a conversion was necessary using Magellan's Geocache Manager software to convert the .loc file to something useable (.gs) by the GPSr. I thought that's what MapSend Lite was for. Not. The whole file transfer thing is very poorly documented from all info sources. You guys are the best info source there is. I just successfully transfered some waypoints to my device. THANK YOU for the assistance. I'm sure I'll be back for more.
  20. Busted. Newbie screw up. I did not see that in the FAQs. I always try to research first before reaching out. At first I couldn't get the cable on that way, plus, it looks like it's supposed to go the other direction. Thanks for your input and patience.
  21. Need help. I get this error message when I turn device on. Any ideas why? I have a Dell PC running Windows XP Home Edition.
  22. Is your 200 more accurate than your 500? Have you held them in proximity to see if the cords are different?
  23. I've also noticed that following the steps described in this thread that tracking starts automatically and I have to manually go and stop/clear the track. Is this normal and what others do? I have a Magellan eXplorist 500. And yes, I am a newbie but having fun learning.
  24. I did this too. Nowhere in the manual does it describe the scenario or exact steps for what seems like a basic use case scenario - entering a set of new coordinates. Why the rude answer particularly in this Newbie forum? It is totally unintuitive to hit MARK then change coordinates to create a new coordinate to save. I figured it out, but it is NOT good user experience design. Actually, so far, most of the instructions are vague - eg, obtaining and using maps, .loc files and MapSend Manager, MapSend Lite, etc. Forums and other users are the most useful instructors and help resources anywhere. Thanks to all who give helpful information here. "READ THE MANUAL" is not helpful.
