    Greetings to the powers that be,

    What are the requirements and methods of posting/publicizing an event at Geocaching.com and/or the Groundspeak forum?

     

    I have a geocaching event that I would like to announce and have put the calandar and I have a few questions (the search feature of this forum was down and I tried in vain to find answers using google etc.):

     

    Do events have to be approved?

    If yes, what do I submit and to who do I submit it to?

    What is required? That is, do I need to create a page at geocaching.com and/or post and announcement in the forums?

    Ritz Camera Geo Photo Hunt

    At first I was skeptical about this Geocaching-type of contest. As I looked through the state listings, I saw that many states did not have any waypoints. You had to manually enter the data to your GPS as there was no downloadable data file. I found several typos, including missing decimal points and even "?" question marks within the data. I was even more surprised to find Charlotte listed under *South* Carolina. It was then, I started wondering just how accurate the coordinates were.

     

    Curiosity got the best of me and my son and I ventured out on a Geo-Photo Hunt last Sunday. The listings for South Carolina had five waypoints in "W. Carolina" which I recognized as downtown Greenville. As we approached the first waypoint we realized that all five were within walking distance. Each waypoint has a clue associated with it and you are supposed to go to the waypoint location and take a picture of what you think the clue refers to. When we got to the location of the first waypoint, my son was the one who spotted the weather vane atop an adjacent building as the answer to the "Which way the wind blows" clue. I was impressed that the location I was standing was the perfect spot to take a picture of the weather vane, because a few feet in any other direction and the view would be obscured by the roofline of the building. This accuracy proved true for the remaining waypoints. Each put us in perfect position to take a picture of the subject.

     

    Overall it was good clean fun and it got my son and I out doing something together on a cold afternoon. Your results may differ. Especially for those of you hunting in Texas (21N Lat?) and Maryland (44W Lon?) where there are obvious errors in the specified coordinates and for those of you in California (N33 58.947 W117 22.385) and Ohio (N41 23.738 W81 51.077) where you have no clue.

     

    To make it easier for you to enter the coordinates into your GPS, I have compiled all of the currently available Geo-photo Hunt waypoints in GPS eXchange (.gpx) format. I have also taken liberties to make corrections to obvious errors. The data file I have created is available at www.travelbygps.com/special/GeoPhoto/hunt.php

    South Carolina Event

    I would like to sponsor a geocaching event near Greenville SC. I am working to establish a type of orienteering course in the suburbs for training emergency response personnel on the use of handheld GPS. In terms of geocaching, the course would be similar to seeking a multi-stage cache. I hope christen the course with an event early next year.     Carry on a Tennessee Tradition

    At last report, the cache "Paint Rock Intruder" (GCAF5) was lost/missing/abducked or carried away by whatever creatures live on that island. And truth is I can't properly maintain it, living so far away. Anyone who would like to carry on this Tennessee tradition contact me. By the way this is a great Halloween caching opportunity - sure spooks me every time I’ve been out there.

    CERT - Community Emergency Response Team

    Hello,

    I am interested in starting a CERT in my area and have some concernes about communications. I can dream about every team member having a VHF with APRS but the license, equipment expense, training... it's just not realistic for a group operating in a limited area with limited resources. However, many in the community have FRS radios and it be easyer to add a few rinos in the mix for keeping track of who is where. I'd still like at least one member of the team to be licensed because the hams are in tight with the weather bureau around here. And I'd like for one or more team members to have trunking VHF receivers to keep tabs on the first responders, power crews, etc.

    Does this all sound reasonable?

     

    I like to hear from anyone who has worked with setting up communications for CERTs and anyone that has experience with using FRS/GMRS in SAR situations (especially curious about communication reliablity in wooded areas).

    hatfields cache reunion

    I got an email from Mikedx, wanted to know what I wanted to do about the the old cache. "Hatfield's View" [#4722] was archived when it was clear that something must have happened to the cache. "Hatfield's View" will remain archived.

     

    To the folks who placed a cache there abouts: feel free to list your cache as a new cache. I just ask one favor, please referance the Hatfield Stash page on my site - the link could be provided as a "hint" for those who want to do the research.

    I heard about a prof who got a grant to get the coordinates of every Holiday Inn in a 400 mile radius. However, this was a few years ago.

     

    I also know of a few folks who have been paid for documenting hiking and water trails, on- and off-road sightseeing routes, dive sites, fishing holes...

     

    I'd like to get a golf gig, surveying tees and greens. icon_cool.gif

    At the time of this writing, there are no laws that specifically forbid GeoCaching in national parks. "Instead, the Code of Federal Regulations – Title 36, Chapter 1, Part 2, Section 2.22 - regarding the prohibition of abandon property has been cited in incidents where GeoCaches have been impounded." - Interview with a Park Ranger

    OK. I've made some changes based on suggestions made here. Please see the updatedPermission Database Submission Form on my web and - please, by all means - post your feedback here. This is a great way to hash out the form.

     

    The more I think about this the more questions I have. I like having the submitter as an alternate, or back up contact. That answers some of my questions. Another set of questions I have are in regard to updating property records and reconciling dublicate records.

    Any more comments? questions?
