  1. Let's do a little test (it's the engineer in me talking now). Do a search on caches in postal code 92127, and use your log method to tell me which caches you would visit if you were in the area and had a free afternoon! I happen to know some of the local favorites so it will be interesting to: 1) see what you find; and 2) see how long it takes you to do it! Yes, take the test! Although I enjoy reading log entries, when I'm traveling I would find the "favorite caches" to be a much more practical tool for caching. No cache owner should feel insulted, only motivated to create caches that might end up on someone's list. OK. back to the matter at hand. We are still waiting for the test results!
  2. Maybe one of these guys can dig through all the past logs to find out who first thought of this idea. Then we can give them credit for being the first person to enter the idea in the forum! After we do this, then all those people that keep bringing this up will feel so much better, and then we can move on to discussing the topic.
  3. Clever trick! I'll use that one to better center my own PQs!
  4. You can set the PQ to retrieve 500 caches centered in the area you are headed to. That should cover a circle that is at least 20 miles in diameter. Are you trying to download caches for a long route?
  5. Which is.......? Unless you mean your quote. If you mean that, I never claimed that this idea was solely mine. In fact, if you read all the logs, many people have had and wished for this idea! Here is a quote that better reflects this rejuvenated topic: "Great minds think alike!"

  7. I was joking! Did you notice the smiley face? Anyhow, even though there is some truth in that adage, if it offended anyone, I take it back!
  8. Opinions are like _____s, everybody's got one and some of them really stink! Edit: I WAS JOKING!
  9. To get 4400 caches, I have to expand my search radius to include about 4 or 5 states ...and I don't mean those tiny New England states either, I'm talking about the large western states The weather out here has a lot to do with the high volume of caches. California has over 76000 caches. Snow makes caching in the winter a bit more challenging in other parts of the world!
  10. We struck out on that hill today too. We also noticed that the area had been recently trimmed back.
  11. I just ran across the World Record for most caches found in 24 hours. Would you believe it is 246 caches!
  12. I've been googling for stats and found the world record for most caches found in 24 hours: Some stats from the day: TOTAL CACHES FOUND - 246 TOTAL DNFs - 56 TOTAL PASSES - 50 TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELED - 224.5 miles DISTANCE BETWEEN CACHES (ALL) - average .746 miles AVERAGE FINDS PER HOUR - 10.25 caches FIND PERCENTAGE ON SEARCH - 81.45% AVERAGE TIME PER FIND - one cache every five minutes and 51 seconds AVERAGE CACHE TIME (ALL) - one every four minutes and 46 seconds TRAVEL BUGS FOUND - 9 MOST DNFs IN A ROW - 5 LONGEST BREAK - 18 minutes Our final cache was #246; With Mayo Please, by IceCreamMan. You can read more about this amazing feat here
  13. Any idea how many cachers ar in the U.S.? The world? It would also be interesting to see the growth rate. If I remember correctly, when I started caching about 2 years ago, there were about 40,000 cachers in the world. There's gotta be >100,000 by now.
  14. You said it in a nutshell and I couldn't agree more!
  15. If someone has only found 10 caches, they really should not be recommending any yet. After they have found 50-100 I think they'll have a better apprecation for what is truly a "wow-type" cache!
  16. Workable idea but I'm a little leery that too many caches would be recommended. We were trying to only allow people to pick one favorite for every 50 or 100 caches they find to make sure they put some thought into selecting a really good one! The other approach would even allow the website to display each cachers favorite caches on their profile page! By the way, Brian, if I made a post every 5 minutes it would take me over 35 days to post as many posts as you have!
  17. I really like that icon! There are over 4000 caches within a 100 miles of where I live! I could imagine a visitor trying to wade through all those! When I'm on vacation I'd love to be able to visit the primo caches in the area because geocahcing had a feature like this!
  18. OK now for the other question I asked: Does anybody know where to find out how many geocachers are in each country, state, etc. ?
  19. Does anyone know can I change the title of this topic from "Cache Rating System" to "Favorite Cache System"?
  20. Sorry back! After hearing it the bad way most of the time, I guess it was a bit of a sore spot with me. Just trying to keep the fun on track!
  21. There would be no "bad" rating. This was intended to allow people to vote for their favorite 1-2% of caches wherever they may be. I was assuming that local cachers would rate some of the local caches as favorites so all areas would have a short list of favorite caches! However, if some areas are lacking it would open the door to creativity and the opportunity for a cacher to create a favorite cache in his area!
  22. If I had a nickel everytime somebody in these forums said "that's been said before" I'd be a millionaire! C'mon guys lighten up!
  23. It was on one of the other Geocaching.com forums. Strangely enough the forum it was in was entitled Forum Language Questions.
  24. That's exactly it NFA! So when you go look at the map of nearest caches of an area that you are going to visit, you could simply highlight "Only show Favorite caches" and view the local cachers favorite ones in that area!
  25. That's exactly what we said above! You get one pick one favorite for every 50 or 100 caches that you find. By the way when I think back on what I've found already picking out 3-6 favorites would be very easy for me to do. Whether it's a micro or an ammo box would have almost no bearing on my decision. I'm looking at sheer enjoyment factor. The fun to me is in the adventure or "wow" factor!!
