  1. I have the world in the palm of my hand - literally (my Dakota 20) - using a 16G micro SD card, loaded with bunches of OSM IMG files. The files are named gmapsupp, gmapsup1, gmapsup2 ... Be sure to disable the maps that are not needed otherwise the booting can be slow !
  2. For precision I'd choose the first, for easy of use the latter. Tomtom will take both (and more) in spite of the format chosen in preference setting. Garmin will chop the last digit (5 instead of 6) of the latter. Just my HO.
  3. Try OsmAnd, free version - you have 10 free downloads (I saw Zambia, 6.7MB). Make GPX file of your caches, then copy it to sdcard/osmand. Then use ES File Explorer to open the GPX, when asked, choose the App to use. I have both OsmAnd and MapFactor Navigator installed, so it popped 2 choices for me.
  4. If you have 1G ram or more consider running XP in VirtualBox. I found this the least unpleasant option to live with windblows.
  5. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/tangogps-gtk-map...pplication.html It uses Open Street maps.
  6. It depends. If the fixes are minor (ex: 'Wrong translation into German ...') , forget it. If it permits the use of a bigger Micro SD, maybe. If it fixes the jumpy compass, definitively. I have been burnt by updates (in general) so I am more careful. But I download them all anyway, just in case.
  7. This happens when you don't have a routable road nearby. Try to use an alternate point which is close to a road on the map. Also check your Planning Preference settings (ie: 'Avoid Unpaved roads' ....
  8. Try setting to 'walking rout'. But I think you have more chance with this plug-in: TripMaster.
  9. Car satnav has "lock to roads" feature that cannot be disabled. That feature is not good for geocaching. There are 3 rd party softwares for TomTom Off-road navigation, but TT is determined to kill them off (every time you upgrade the software). Buy a cheap separate hand-held. Less headache.
  10. Do you have TT One V3 ? It doesn't support Itinerary Planning.
  11. There are so many innovations on the car front (Reality View, Lane Guidance, IQ Routes, Real Time Traffic ...), they cannot spread their programmers thin supporting handheld GPS, where the competition is weak (Magellan, Delorme). They cannot afford to lose the car navigation battlefront. Their big mistake is releasing so many models that they cannot support them adequately.
  12. How about ... kissing ? As for me I dread scenes in the movies where the driver TURN his/her head RIGHT to do the talking.
  13. It still does. That's why I asked the question !
  14. So AutoZoom= 'Off' doesn't serve any purpose ?!
  15. Every time I do a 'Find' the map zooms out to 8mi which is very annoying. I want it to be at 500 ft and stays there. Thanks. Here is my Map setup: Track Up/below: 800ft/AutoZoom: OFF/Detail: MOST/Lock on Road: OFF. It run on version 3.50 software.
  16. TomTom 930T or 930 (no traffic receiver). You get EPT (enhanced position technology - to drive under tunnels), ALG (advanced lane guidance - when the lanes are confusing), IQ Routes (choose the routes according to the time of the day), Mapshare (map corrections shared online with other users). If you want spend less, go for the 730 (which is the 930 minus the EPT). The Satellite acquisition , Route calc and route recalc are also superfast on TomToms.
  17. It's not TomTom fault, all the car units are the same, it's specialized for car not geocaching. A car GPS will 'snap to a nearby road' not your cache.
  18. I would invest in a Lengend HCx or a Vista HCx, but not more than that, to protect my investment in the long run. If you are a tinkerer, and frequent world traveller - Garmin & TomTom together can help covering more maps than any sources out there. Also there are more freebies written for them. If you want just geocaching, then invest in a cheapest that has a high sensitivity chip (Garmin H-Etrex, Triton - cannot remember the model right off the bat, but you search easily for it here).
  19. Don't worry. The war will be bigger on the Automobile navigation front. For handhelds we still have Magellan, DeLorme ...
  20. I have a 60CSx for geocaching and a TomTom for car. Here how I start going paperless: Every week when I receive the email from Geocaching. - Load the cache to the Garmin using the SEND to GPS button - at the same time Enter as a POI, in the TomTom as the POI name : GCxxxx-2,1.,1 "Hint" where 2 size (1= micro) 1. difficulty (1. means 1.5) 1 terrain use the GCxxxx name on TomTom to find & drive near the cache, on Garmin to zero in.
  21. I use my TomTom to go to/from work every day, even though I know the route better than the palm of my hand. This morning it surely saved me one expensive ticket, because as I turn into my office parking lot I saw flashing light. When I got out of the car, a second car got caught ! Whew !
